AIBU to have never had a credit card?

Has anyone else never had a credit card? I have literally never had one. Surely I’m not the only one?

Edited to add- I’m in Ireland so the “extra protection” they provide in the uk under section 75, does not apply here

@Goatsarebest apologies I put my hands up, I’m wrong, I read something last year another time a thread like this was going that said it was from merchant fees. I may be misremembering the context.

MMAS · 11/04/2026 20:05

You are misinformed. Irish Credit Cards do come with protection.

SpiritOfEcstasy · 11/04/2026 20:14

I’m in Ireland too but have one pretty much just for car hire purposes …

they work using chargeback, which is how it works on a debit card too

Same. No cc, no problem getting a mortgage or loans

pambeesleyhalpert · 11/04/2026 21:46

I get so many rewards by using my credit card!

Mlamla · 11/04/2026 21:47

Nope never had one and I'm not planning to have one,I'm late 30s. I have visa and it's enough for me.

Allonthesametrain · 11/04/2026 23:06

As a student decades ago it was a must because atms weren't as accessible, also because we we actually had little money and beyond overdraft!

Credit cards are really helpful when you don't have funds, so paying off the minimum at zero pc and these days you simply transfer to another zero pc interest rate. Much like PayPal and paying in installments and prior catalogue magazines to spread the cost.

No one wants to rely on credit cards but when you need to it's a help! Xx

schtompy · 11/04/2026 23:28

Nope never

Haribitch · 12/04/2026 00:00

I use a CC for all big/risky purchases and for any travel bookings.

Plus get air miles.

gentileprof7 · 12/04/2026 01:20

Yanbu
I got one because I wanted to use a card abroad and I was going abroad on my own (early 20s). At that time, you could not use your switch card abroad (now you can) so.i got a credit card. If you get one, always make sure you pay it off at the end of each month.

ChubbyPuffling · 12/04/2026 08:32

My wages go into my bank account at the start of the month, and earn interest for us all month. My credit card is used to pay for everything - food, streaming, car, new windows, holidays, eating out, whatever, and we get cashback for using it. (And sometimes more cashback for using it through a cashback site.)

At the end of the month we pay off the balance. Extra money for free... what's not to like.

I never had one, and as covid broke out my 10 day holiday in tenerife turned into a 3 day nightmare. Long story short,if I had paid on a credit card,I would of had a chance of getting my money back plus all the flights I booked that got cancelled to try and get home. So yes I have got one, but I'd got to 47 without one

Check Moneysavingexpert.

Findingithardnow · 12/04/2026 12:11

Its not unreasonable, bit certainly beneficial if you can control your spending.
Any purchases are covered usually (tickets, services) by the company as its their money initially, not yours. Also if you have £2K limit, use a few hundred £'s a month and pay it off every month it does improve your credit rating as you have credit available, thay you don't use.
Also handy for emergencies.

I pay mine off twice a month and haven't paid interest for about 5 years

I have the NatWest black and get tons of rewards with that but also have the free Amex and it’s paid for loads of flights! If you’re not getting any benefits I’d definitely change!

NotThisShitAgain121 · 12/04/2026 18:04

Do yourself a favour. Never get one. Opening yourself up for a whole load of shit. There are other ways to get credit.

No most places do now : )

igelkott2026 · 12/04/2026 21:10

I used to have one but I don't like having debt. I gradually stopped using it other than for the odd flight or hotel bill and then the bank reduced my credit limit to a useless level. I asked for it to be increased so it was enough to pay for flights or hotels but they refused so I cancelled it.

Back in the day I used to put all my food and petrol on an Amex card to earn points . But I didn't like knowing that if I lost my job I had that extra debt to deal with.

igelkott2026 · 12/04/2026 21:22

UniquePinkSwan · 11/04/2026 09:29

I don’t understand people who don’t use one. The protection is great and it’s good for your credit rating. Every single purchase I make is out in the credit card. Even under £1. I pay it off every month

If you are younger and need loans and mortgages that's true.

But I won't have a mortgage again - if I fell on hard times I'd sell my current mortgage-free house and buy somewhere cheaper. So I don't really care about my credit rating.

I have found a hotel hold annoying but that was because they didn't release it when I paid the bill and it sat there for 30 days. The next time I stayed there I solved that problem by paying the bill when I got there and then paying bar bills as and when we had a drink. That's the only time that has happened and it was a mistake by the hotel. And DH has a credit card if we ever needed to hire a car.
