to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

timetoban · 10/04/2026 13:07

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

The next time I see goats' cheese on the menu I will wonder if it's from goats or for goats and will think of you.

😀

How are you supposed to find dog-free cafes ?

What Google search term works to get a list of cafes in say York (where I live) where dogs are banned ?

Tutorpuzzle · 11/04/2026 18:37

Can we also save “invisible dog that tripped me up on a train” for the bingo card on the next thread, @PottingBench ? Bit niche, but it did make me giggle!

Gloriia · 11/04/2026 18:45

'Hang on a minute.I thought the discussion was because dogs are everywhere. Now 'many do ban dogs'.

Hang on a minute, you posted a list of places that don't allow dogs hence my comment that surely, surely this must give the 'it must come everywhere with me' entitled owners a clue that they are seen as a nuisance and unwelcome in many public areas.

Some owners are hopeless. I popped to my parents earlier, a cousin had visited and taken their shitzu who scurried about yapping the whole time. They hadn't texted to ask if it was welcome just pitched up with it Confused

I'm glad the long list of dog free venues was useful and I hope you'll enjoy visiting them when you're out and about. There really are lots of great dog free cafes and restaurants out there.

Absolutely dog owners know that in some places dogs aren't welcome. It's the owner's prerogative and is completely understandable. It's one of the things you accept when you have a dog. That doesn't make the lack of welcome universal though, in fact there are many places where they're welcomed wholeheartedly. There really is somewhere for everyone.

Strange that your cousin's Shih Tzu was barking the whole time. They're not usually overly vocal.

I google something like 'great cafes/restaurants in York'.
It comes up long lists of answers like Betty's or Lucia's.
Then I see which ones I fancy and ask Google are they dog friendly. It tells me Betty's isn't and Lucia's only is if you sit outside with your dog.

Google 'Places in York that won't allow dogs'. That also brings up lots of useful information.

@Gloriia but how do you know that the dogs you see in cafés go everywhere though? Do you ask the owners to find out?

Places I have been this week with my dog:

  • café this morning which was on our dog walk route (new find, very nice 10/10)

Places I have been without my dog this week:

  • coffee with a friend
  • farmers market (you get better potatoes honestly)
  • bakery
  • Taking my injured friend to her physiotherapy session where i waited in...another café...
  • out for dinner last night
  • pet store for more food

I could have taken her to all those places yet she came to only one.

If you saw me in the café this morning with my dog, woukd you have drawn your lazy conclusion that I must take my dog everywhere?

I ask you again - how can you possibly know the schedules of complete strangers?

This is a really great point. Most people are leaving their dogs at home most of the time
Something like 40% of people live with a dog, and there certainly isn't a dog table fo every non dog table in cafes nationwide (or more to account for all the people eating in non dog friendly establishments!)

For most people taking their dog out with them will be the exception.

Equally in the last few pub visits, one dog sticks out as poorly behaved. Not the plenty under a table politely or the majority sat at home!

A mature and informative answer.

Every single person I meet with a dog treats them like a child, expects everyone to fawn over them, lets them jump all over me, and treats me like I am unreasonable for not wanting that.

You love your dog, GOOD FOR YOU.

I love going into a cafe where there are NO DOGS.

No idea why this is so fucking triggering for you all. Hence the YAWN because the entitlement is so tedious.

Who’s stopping you going into a cafe where there’s no dogs? Plenty exist.

Why should i ask first? Cafes are for humans. Not for animals. It’s really quite simple.

Nope. Cafes are for whoever and whatever the cafe owner allows in. Cafe near me serves dog portions of roast dinners for the dogs. They have a sub section on the main menu, 👍

Becuase you don’t like dogs and want to be somewhere that they aren’t. In order to ensure your own comfort, you can choose somewhere that doesn’t allow dogs. Or you can cut your nose off to spite your face, refuse to check first and then be saddled with the business owners choice to permit dogs.

Who else do you expect to take responsibility for your preferences?

Parents who do that are fucking annoying.
I have never met a dog owner like that. My dog would lay under the table in a cafe, out of the way of everyone. If that is treating her like a child then you have a really low bar when it comes to looking after kids.

That sounds amazing.
My mum took her greyhound to a place, and the staff all loved him. He got a free sausage. They even cut it up for him. This was a place that had no dog items on the menu too.

There should surely be a Fast Show or Viz character like this. Dog Magnet Woman. Just a normal woman wandering down a normal, suburban street but underneath that cagoule she's a dog magnet. Out of every alleyway emerge people pushing forward designer dogs in babies bonnets (perhaps some in dog prams [BINGO]). They're encouraging jumping all over Dog Magnet Woman and urging her to fawn. 'Go on lady, just one more jump' 'Give Rover a fawn for us now, just one more fawn''. Dog Magnet Woman refuses and rushes onwards towards Wetherspoons dog free sanctuary.

Dog owners then strolling off, lead in hand, shrugging at each other and muttering 'Well she was unreasonable - didn't want that.'

Oh well if we're talking bingo cards let's have the entitled owners.

Their dogs never whine, bark or are a nuisance. Never.
They sit perfectly still and are not a trip hazard in cafes ever <despite them often lying exactly where we need to access>
They never sit on chairs <despite us all seeing dogs sitting on chairs>
They never ever ever bother other customers with lunges and licks <despite us all experiencing this>.
They all get a brisk hours walk before sitting bored witless while their owners eat cake.
They never shed dog hairs.

Have I missed anything?

Onleemoi · 12/04/2026 07:51

I think you’re still confused about what constitutes as entitled. It isn’t entitled to take dogs to places that welcome them. It is entitled to demand people don’t because you don’t like it. The rest is you putting two and two together after seeing a brief moment in someone’s day.

'It isn’t entitled to take dogs to places that welcome them. It is entitled to demand people don’t because you don’t like it'

It is when you know all the other users, both sensible dog owners without their dogs or those who dont own dogs, don't like it.

It is inconsiderate and entitled regardless of what the coffee shop owners 'allows'.

Well your posts are getting more and more unhinged. It's inconsiderate and entitled to take a dog into a place where dogs are allowed!!!!

No, it's bloody stupid if you don't like dogs in coffee shops to go to ones where they are allowed and then moan and bleat about it

Jolly good.

Can I make a suggestion?

Don’t go to places that welcome dogs. Then you won’t meet any ‘entitled’ dog owners. Or their lunging, licking, bums on seats dogs.

And we will be safe from you.

Simple, no?

It really isn’t. No matter how many times you say it. Stick to facts and your one woman mission to change the world.

Wolfiefan · 12/04/2026 08:42

If I didn’t want to eat in a place that allowed dogs then I would stick to places that don’t allow them.
BUT I don’t take my dogs to such places purely as they are giants and would be in the way and diners could be put off by their size.

I hate the smell of fish, is it inconsiderate of someone to order it in a restaurant that sells fish, to accommodate my preference?

I hate smoking, is it inconsiderate of someone to smoke in a designated smoking area, in case I want to go in there? Or could I maybe just, hmm let’s think… go somewhere people aren’t allowed to smoke.
