Irritated that families on UC get heavily discounted entry

1000 replies

happybug1234 · 09/04/2026 17:54

feel very aggrieved this afternoon to find out that people on UC get heavily discounted entry to popular attractions:

London Zoo
London transport museum
science museum wonderlab
Cutty Sark
kew Gardens
St Paul’s cathedral

As a mum with a professional career, with both husband and I working full time, paying a mortgage, paying a fortune in childcare for 2 under 4’s I seriously despair! From experience of people I see around me, families on UC seem to have more disposable income than us as their rent is paid, have no childcare costs and all their costs subsidised on social tariffs etc.

why is the government getting away with this and why are more middle class/income people not up in arms about it! At the moment I can’t see how us working hard and being self sufficient has benefited us as a family.

That doesn’t mean they should get something subsidised. They already get so many other hand outs. Meanwhile those of us who have sacrificed a lot for education and working very difficult and demanding jobs get no free hand outs. Read up on the squeezed middle. Labour have f*cked this country.

The country was fucked before Labour got in.

Do you really think simply because we keep some families from starving their children shouldn't be entitled to cheaper tickets to cultural sites?

WatermelonSalad1 · 09/04/2026 18:28

Posters who said they should go on up and down the country

It does go on up and down the whole country - lots of places offer these discounts - I remember some mummy bloggers talking about it a few years back

And why are people blaming this government when these schemes have been in place for ages?

Talking about it like it's only just happened

I can see someone's made a comment about Reform so I presume they're making a fuss about it, but it has been going on for ages

Whatever you think about it, is there a subsidy? I don't know about. I just thought that private organisations have decided to make special offers to people in the same way that used to get cheap student tickets and so on

So the focus has changed a bit but it's got nothing to do with the government has it

no government is going to get in and tell private businesses they can't offer discounts

If somebody says that government are allocating money towards it, then I understand that's a bit of an issue but I don't think that's what's happening

You're right OP, people on benefits should stay inside out of sight and never have any fun. They should know their place. It's a travesty that underprivileged children are given the chance to experience fun days out, they don't deserve it at all.

🙄

This is the thing lots of people would post like this - but it's a perk that others who work often can't get. So it is unfair.

Either you've been a recipient of it or have enough money not to care. But for the working families who miss out on things because it's out of budget have every right to feel aggrieved.

Edited to add I agree with support given to those with disabilities or ill health and understand people can go through life changes eg separation, ill health etc.

But there's lots of people having kids (multiple) yet not working and living the same standard of life or better, but living off benefits. Literally taking the piss!

And to the posters saying oh but theyl never own their property - well if they've never worked then they don't deserve to.

These offers need to be given to those that really need it.

Ochtawa · 09/04/2026 18:23

Yes they have. Keir starmer personally nationalised all the theme parks and passed a law so that the only people who could access them were the Disabled, the Trans and the Woke. If you can get yourself a rainbow lanyard and a mobility scooter you might be able to sneak in, but they will ask you trick questions in a misleadingly conversational way (eg :"how was your vegan breakfast this morning?") at the entrance gates, so stay alert.

Off to practise my answers 👌🏾!

And what about children from families who don’t receive benefits but cannot afford the zoo? Because they’ve spent all their money on rising rent and mortgages, energy prices and food?

I do feel sympathy with this...we are certainly in this bracket and both work full time but our kids wouldn't get to go to the zoo as we can't afford it and are not entitled to this scheme

I have to check myself when I feel this way as it isn't individuals who take advantage of such schemes fault they are entitled to it and I am not so I know my jealousy is misplaced but these schemes don't even things up so to speak, I imagine a lot of children fall in the middle if not being eligible and their family not affording it

Those in benefits will get pension credit to top them up and also my property will be used for care fees where as someone with no home will get theirs paid for. So at the end of the day no better off….

So, you and your husband give up your jobs then. Go for it.

Katemax82 · 09/04/2026 18:29

Does the reduced entry apply to anyone claiming UC or just the ones on low income who qualify for free prescriptions? Asking for a friend

Ohhhwell · 09/04/2026 18:29

My user name says it all.

Sirzy · 09/04/2026 18:29

Places often subsidise entry to get more interest from target groups in, people they want to help engage more in what they offer.

We went to an RSPB place yesterday and they offer free entry for 16-25 year olds because they know they are a group which often don’t engage with what they offer. Makes perfect sense to me.

These places know the importance of what they offer and they know which groups in society are often harder to reach so they work to help reach them. Providing opportunities, even ones as seemingly small as these, can all help towards levelling society just a little.

PeonyPatch · 09/04/2026 18:29

Shall we all just not bother to work then? Go on UC? Bankrupt the UK? See you all at London zoo. My god

MadamDicey · 09/04/2026 18:29

Do you really grudge people on UC getting a small discount ? Does it really make a difference to you ?

Labour who have been in power for… just shy of 2 of the last 16 years?

PonyPatter44 · 09/04/2026 18:29

If you're doing so badly in your "professional " job, why don't you just work a bit harder?

eatreadsleeprepeat · 09/04/2026 18:30

PeonyPatch · 09/04/2026 18:00

I agree with OP. These are luxuries that you should work hard for, not be given for free.

Children do not choose the family they are born into. Do you truly think that educational type museums should therefore be a luxury they cannot have? As a society we should be working towards each generation facing less inequality of opportunity than the one before. This isn’t just about education but about enrichment which access to these places helps with. There will be some families on UC who are choosing not to work but many will have been the victims of some misfortune and are trying to get out of a poverty and welfare trap. They are people not a subclass.

Life IS unfair. Its funny how that only bothers you when you feel as though you're the one missing out, as opposed to those who have to use food banks.

Yes, they obviously pay less for food clothing and utilities than the rest of us.

Yes topped up to about £240 a week, they can live the high life then.

5to5 · 09/04/2026 18:30

Wow I didn’t know that off to tell people so they can get in for cheap thank you!!!

BillieWiper · 09/04/2026 18:30

Have you thought about taking in ironing OP? I'm sorry to hear that you're a failure but a bit of hard work and all will be well.

Triskellion75 · 09/04/2026 18:32

Never mind discounts, I say we just round the scrounging bastards up until they can prove themselves fit to be part of a decent society.

happybug1234 · 09/04/2026 18:32

Allisnotlost1 · 09/04/2026 18:16

Then quit work and live on UC, if you think it’s a great life. 🤷‍♀️

Edited

It’s too late now! I have a mortgage, UC won’t let you voluntarily give up work, sell your house and spend the proceeds!
