Irritated that families on UC get heavily discounted entry

1000 replies

happybug1234 · 09/04/2026 17:54

feel very aggrieved this afternoon to find out that people on UC get heavily discounted entry to popular attractions:

London Zoo
London transport museum
science museum wonderlab
Cutty Sark
kew Gardens
St Paul’s cathedral

As a mum with a professional career, with both husband and I working full time, paying a mortgage, paying a fortune in childcare for 2 under 4’s I seriously despair! From experience of people I see around me, families on UC seem to have more disposable income than us as their rent is paid, have no childcare costs and all their costs subsidised on social tariffs etc.

why is the government getting away with this and why are more middle class/income people not up in arms about it! At the moment I can’t see how us working hard and being self sufficient has benefited us as a family.

Sure Jade, I’ll pack my job in then and add to the benefit burden of this country. Thanks for your advice love. See ya at the zoo yeah?

Aren’t you on another thread arguing that parents of twins should get more money? So you’re ok with ‘handouts’ for some (ie you) but not others.

Animatic · 09/04/2026 18:47

I'd have just counted my blessings that I can pay without relying on state.

They don't call it the benefits gravy train for nothing!

Gravy train because you can go to London Zoo on a discount? Best jump on it then

The problem is most people claiming UC on this thread are expecting buckets of sympathy and woe is me but you are completely incapable of putting yourselves in the shoes of working families who receive nothing in hand outs, and are yet in exactly the same financial position as you are in at the end of the month. Oh but you get to go to these places at a discounted rate. Make it make sense. It needs to be fair.

No one saying they claim UC on this thread has demanded or requested sympathy.

But those not eligible for benefits keep whinging how unfair it is that those poorer than them receive discounts from charities.

Whaleandsnail6 · 09/04/2026 18:33

But there will be a whole category of children who still miss out as they don't qualify for uc but their family can't afford these places.

Cathedrals are free if you go to a service. Nobody needs to miss out on those.

Kew gardens is free for under 4s. You’d need to pay for an adult but that’s it.

London Zoo and many others have 2 for 1 offers if you travel by national rail or tfl.

none of these places have anything to do with the government.

I pay my mortgage but I chose to live in an affordable area. Did you?

It's irrelevant what you do. I was comparing to someone who lives in the same area as me, fully on benefits and has holidays every school holiday.

Firstbornunicorn · 09/04/2026 18:46

I just find it really unfair that under 4s go free to my local National Trust place, but I have to pay. They live such a good quality of life on someone else's money already 😭😭😭 you should see them all lining up at the gates on nice days.

Absolute wasters.

My four kids under 7 are the same. Just swan about living the life of riley, always got their hands out and contributing absolutely nothing.

The dog doesn't even run the hoover round either.

People under attack don’t have much empathy for their critics.

FKAT · 09/04/2026 18:48

Why don't the squeezed middle just get better paid jobs? This would free up their current roles for the unemployed and everyone would benefit.

Parrotpirate · 09/04/2026 18:49

happybug1234 · 09/04/2026 18:32

It’s too late now! I have a mortgage, UC won’t let you voluntarily give up work, sell your house and spend the proceeds!

It Ok OP.

UC is still available to those of us with a mortgage, you just dont get help with it, so you are allowed to earn a little over £100 p/m more before they take 55p per £1 off your earnings.

You can apply for your mortgage interest to be paid for a period, though I believe thats a loan and has to be paid back.

Summer is coming so get your notice letter ready so you can get to all these amazing attractions for £1.

Also you'll need to make sure DH isn't earning too much to make you ineligible.

Sounds like working full time.

Except there are reasons which mean this family can't achieve the same standard of living without benefits. Unlike you.

You do realise most of us where them families who got no support then something horrific happened where we needed to use the safety net we have been paying into. Trust me as someone who has lived both lives. Not being on benefits is better

Unfortunately some of us have to pay for gravy train otherwise we'd be in economic ruin. We can't all be pisstakers or we will run out of piss.

Periperi2025 · 09/04/2026 18:50

I have big issues with elements of the benefit system, but this is not one of them.

There are a mix of people of UC.

There are hard working families doing demanding and essential work for minimum wage because somehow we have become a country that doesn't properly recognise the importance and contribution of certain members of society. They deserve nice things too, so I hope they find the time to enjoy these places.

At the other end of the spectrum there are scroungers, scroats, scumbags (whatever term you want to choose OP) who genuinely don't and won't ever contribute much at all too society, but maybe, just maybe, if their kids experience some quality, enriching, cultural activities, they might do better in the next generation, so let them have their museum tickets.

Like the unemployed can move into these professional jobs.

Now those are the scroungers we need to talk about. Living their best little lives on someone else's dime and time.

BigYellowBus · 09/04/2026 18:24

I can honestly say I have no idea whether anyone I know claims benefits (and if they did, I would assume it was their right). How come everyone else seems to know their friends' incomes in such detail

Because a lot of people who are ‘well off’ from claiming benefits, are very vocal about what they get.

I just looked at booking Queen Elizabeth through fashion exhibition in London. I can't afford it. Adult is 22 and my teenage daughter is 14 pounds. UC 'poor' have it for 1 pound. I hope they enjoy it. My child and I will not.

Carandache18 · 09/04/2026 18:51

As a child from a large family who grew up poor and never went to anything, the cinema once in a childhood, London zoo twice with school, I have to say you don't know how life enhancing those trips must be for the kids, nor how they might stimulate their curiosity and ambition. To see other worlds outside your own.
I am thrilled to know these things are subsidised.

Uh oh 😳

Merryoldgoat · 09/04/2026 18:52

I agree. Everyone on UC has loads of money. That’s why there are no food banks, no homeless families in temporary accommodation, no children on poverty etc.

You do realise most UC claimants are IN WORK don’t you? Our government is subsidising poverty-level wages. That’s what we should be angry about - not people who need it to live.
