Do you wipe your baby every nappy change?

Discussing with friends (obviously if a poo or nappy rash is present then all of us agree it’s wipe and appropriate cream). We also agreed wipes are used first nappy change if your child has slept through the night without a nappy change.

Some of us use wipes every nappy (wees) and some of us do every 2-3 nappies and we literally couldn’t believe the divide between the two! There were really strong (healthy) arguments for why both are the “right” thing to do.

Not saying what camp I’m in, just wondering what you all think!

YABU - Wipe every time
YANBU - Wipe every other or every 2/3 nappies

They wee and defecate in nappies, so you need to remove that from the skin - so wiping obviously. Or are you saying people in your circle change clean nappies?

HotRootsAndNaughtyToots · 08/04/2026 21:52

Everytime - you can't leave urine on the skin!

KidsLifePathQuestion · 08/04/2026 21:52

Wipe every time with a gentle wipe, like water wipes. Wee is an irritant, you need to get it off the skin.

ohwtf · 08/04/2026 21:52

Wipe every single time!

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 08/04/2026 21:53

Wipe every time, why on earth would you leave urine on a babies skin?

CremeEggThief · 08/04/2026 21:53

I can honestly say it had never ever occurred to me not to wipe in this situation, before reading this post!

SockPlant · 08/04/2026 21:53

What an odd discussion. Turn it round on the members of the discussion "do you wipe every time you use the toilet? only after a poo? poo and wee?" and see how batshit it is.

FWIW: i used cloth nappies, and at home washed and dried every change (even on the occasions i used disposables), Out and about i was more likely to use disposables, but even so, thoroughly cleaned and dried the baby every change.

8misskitty8 · 08/04/2026 21:56

Of course you wipe every change !

You wipe yourself after you pee, you don't drip dry do you ? Urine Smells when it drys nd unhygienic.

LauraJaneGrace · 08/04/2026 21:58

Every single time.

If you wee'd all over yourself would you just change your knickers without wiping???

Randomlygeneratedname · 08/04/2026 21:58

The only time I don't wipe a wee is if doing a quick car or field change. Then I wipe and change again at the next indoor changing spot, used nappy or not.

youalright · 08/04/2026 22:00

Yes everytime just like i wipe myself every time I go to the toilet

TheCurious0range · 08/04/2026 22:00

Would you go to the toilet and not wipe?!

ThePoshUns · 08/04/2026 22:01

Of course you wipe every time. Urine is acidic and could burn baby’s skin. How bloody lazy.

Decacaffeinatednow · 08/04/2026 22:02

What are the strong healthy argument in favour of leaving a baby with urine on its skin?

madosaurus · 08/04/2026 22:03

What are the reasons for not wiping every single time?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 08/04/2026 22:05

Wipe every time! It’s borderline neglectful not to, would you sit in your own wee all day and not clean?

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 08/04/2026 22:07

It has never occurred to me not to wipe and now thinking about it I was thinking it would smell and irritate the skin.

But having just googled, there were loads of parenting sites stating it wasn’t necessary as modern nappies are so absorbent and because urine rarely affects the skin. They reckoned using fragranced wipes was worse.

I’m not convinced and really wouldn’t feel happy not wiping. I only used water and cotton wool, or water wipes so they felt gentle.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 08/04/2026 22:07

I’ve literally never heard of someone changing a nappy without wiping. We never used fragranced wipes though - I wouldn’t have used something where I felt it was better to leave urine on their skin rather than use the product I’ve specifically bought to clean them.

custardlover · 08/04/2026 22:09

Would never dream of not wiping.

Decacaffeinatednow · 08/04/2026 22:12

I never used fragranced wipes. Cotton wool and water all the time.

GloriaHeeler · 08/04/2026 22:13

I’ve never ever heard of anyone not wiping.

MayaPinion · 08/04/2026 22:14

Of course you wipe every time. You can’t leave urine on your baby’s skin, and they would smell bad.

HotRootsAndNaughtyToots · 08/04/2026 22:14

I would actually think it's neglect not to clean urine off a baby's skin - like pp said, clean water on cotton wool is fine

5to5 · 08/04/2026 22:15

Are you fucking joking. Who just takes a nappy off their child and doesn’t wipe?

takeitawaygeraldine · 08/04/2026 22:16

Of course babies need to be cleaned at every nappy change, using water wipes or cotton wool, not fragranced wipes.
I'm shocked to learn that some parents change a nappy without wiping their baby, why would anyone want to leave urine on a baby's delicate skin .
