Do you wipe your baby every nappy change?

Discussing with friends (obviously if a poo or nappy rash is present then all of us agree it’s wipe and appropriate cream). We also agreed wipes are used first nappy change if your child has slept through the night without a nappy change.

Some of us use wipes every nappy (wees) and some of us do every 2-3 nappies and we literally couldn’t believe the divide between the two! There were really strong (healthy) arguments for why both are the “right” thing to do.

Not saying what camp I’m in, just wondering what you all think!

YABU - Wipe every time
YANBU - Wipe every other or every 2/3 nappies

Absolutely wipe everything, do you not wipe after every wee

Hankunamatata · 08/04/2026 22:17

Never occurred to me that you wouldnt wipe everytime. You need to cleanse the skin of urine.

We did mainly use cloth nappies though.

We used reusable wipes which are fab.

bryceQ · 08/04/2026 22:19

Wipe every time and always a layer of zinc and castor oil cream after. My son never had a rash and he wears nappies now at 7 (disabled) and still same process.

mynameiscalypso · 08/04/2026 22:22

How long does it take to wipe a baby’s bottom with a wet flannel or something? If you don’t like using wipes, there are plenty of other options. Leaving a baby with urine on their skin isn’t one of them.

TheLette · 08/04/2026 22:22

I always wiped every single nappy change. Euw. Why on earth would you not do this. Hoping OP returns to educate us on the good reasons for not doing it, as I really can't think of any.

lifeisahighway1 · 08/04/2026 22:22

Interesting that it’s a very strong “wipe every time” from you guys!

I think the argument for not is as somebody commented, modern nappies absorb so much that if you change every feed for instance every 3 hours, the chances are that the baby hasn’t had urine sitting on their skin directly because it’s so absorbed.

I am strongly for one option personally BUT can understand the other side.

They might absorb a lot, but the urine goes on the skin whilst weeing, it doesn’t magically avoid all skin contact when coming out. It’s not a hard debate

CaffeineAndChords · 08/04/2026 22:25

Omg. I’m shocked any mother wouldn’t wipe them every nappy change. Would they sit in urine for any length of time? That’s revolting. Never even considered this would be a thing.

PinkOrchard · 08/04/2026 22:25

Eww yes wipe every time! Do you wipe every time you go to the toilet? Yes! So I wouldn't do anything differently for a baby - wouldn't even enter my mind to not tbh!

GlovedhandsCecilia · 08/04/2026 22:26

I'm overjoyed the results are at least what they are.

Absorbed - yes. It still comes into contact with the skin prior to this and even when absorbed, still comes into contact with the skin the whole time the nappy is on.

Unless the power of the nappy is akin to that of the suction from an airline toilet, there in no chance a baby can wee without it going on their skin. I just can’t see how anyone can think this is an OK thing to do. How lazy are people that they can’t be bothered to wipe urine from a baby?

There’s a long road ahead. This is a relatively simple job when compared to the thousands of things you have to do when you have a child.

WimbyAce · 08/04/2026 22:30

Yes we always wiped every time. I am amazed this is up for discussion tbh! Imagine just taking one nappy off and putting on another without cleaning!

BeebeeBoyle · 08/04/2026 22:35

Gosh, I'm very relaxed on the hygiene front but am feeling very sorry for the babies whose parents can't be bothered to wipe them with a wet flannel or wipe when changing a wee-filled nappy!

DysmalRadius · 08/04/2026 22:37

I mean, sanitary towels and incontinence pads are really absorbent too, but I think an adult that used that as an excuse not to wipe themselves would quickly realise their error.

CinnamonBuns67 · 08/04/2026 22:37

Wipe every time, it's gross not to.

ElmBeechOak · 08/04/2026 22:37

I wiped every time, but only with cotton wool and water. I can’t see any argument for not doing that.

I can hardly believe you know more than one person who would admit to NOT wiping their baby, it's really off. I can't understand that side at all.

ChickenBananaBanana · 08/04/2026 22:39

Always dry with cotton wool

DustyMaiden · 08/04/2026 22:41

I have witnessed someone doing that, I just thought they must be incredibly lazy.

Dollymylove · 08/04/2026 22:42

Yes definitely always wipe. If poo meets wee on the skin baby could end up with a nasty nappy rash

ClairDeLaLune · 08/04/2026 22:45

Wipe every time. But not with wipes, I used wet cotton wool.

Anywherebuthere · 08/04/2026 22:47

What were the strong/healthy reasons for not wiping?

Happyjoe · 08/04/2026 22:48

Why would you put baby at risk of nappy rash? Ouchy.

Wee on it's own will do that too.
