To be nervous

I’m going out the beginning of next month. I’m going to a concert at the o2 with a friend. On the way back for the last leg of the journey, we will separate and get on different trains. She’s okay about this but I’m nervous, I’m literally on my own train for about 10 minutes before I get off and get into my taxi. It will be about 12ish at night and I’m a bit nervous.
has anyone done this before and have they been ok? I’ve watched too many crime programmes to know the possibilities of what could happen 🫣 Aibu to worry?

Jesus Christ. No wonder there’s so many missing children in London.

What a bizarre take.

I was getting the bus to school in Liverpool twenty years ago, aged 11, as were the vast majority of kids who went to my school.

It is totally and completely normal.

SUUUUUUNNNNN · 09/04/2026 21:20

How many missing children are there in London then?!

9,370

Happytaytos · 09/04/2026 21:54

I once got murdered doing this, wouldn't reccommend.

Muttley1968 · 09/04/2026 21:55

The taxis are literally outside the station so 10 seconds away

Pizzahncher · 09/04/2026 21:56

I was lost and tipsy on the underground at 2am and absolutely fine.

and I was on a late train from the o2 once full of Take That fans and it was the nicest journey I had ever been on (I was just going home...)

Youll be fine. And when you're home you'll have a new sense of "I did that! What else can I do?" 💐

Ilovecheeseyah · 09/04/2026 21:57

Make sure you have a full battery, extra charge and cash. You will be fine ! Enjoy it!!!!!

Again, 20 years ago the world was extremely different risk-wise. Back in the 80s I was walking to and from school alone in year 3! Now, I wouldn’t let my 11yr old (year 6) walk to the next street alone and I live in a very nice place.
We live in an exceptionally dangerous world now, especially with open borders in this country!

SALaw · 09/04/2026 21:58

I doubt anyone will have done this before or, if they have, they definitely wouldn’t have been ok.

HelenaWilson · 09/04/2026 22:00

Life was very different in the 2000s!!!!!

So how do you think secondary school pupils get to school these days?

Now, I wouldn’t let my 11yr old (year 6) walk to the next street alone and I live in a very nice place.

What will you do when s/he gets to yr7, presumably in September?

Make sure you have a full battery, extra charge and cash.

She's only going to be on the train alone for 10 minutes after her friend has got off!

In more worried about standing on an empty train platform , for context the train station is shenfield. I’ve never been here before so I’m not sure what it’s like, I’m hoping it’s not dead quiet! I’ll video call husband all the way on the train so that’s not too bad I suppose . No I’m not used to doing it at all I’m not sure I’ll do it again either 🤣

You’ll be absolutely fine and there will probably be loads of other people travelling so not an empty platform, but echo prior posters about not video calling your husband! A phone snatch would be really annoying.

2021x · 09/04/2026 22:02

You will be fine, and by the sounds of it, it will be good for you.

Hope you have a nice time at the concert.

Absolute balderdash.

I live a five minute walk from two high schools and kids are pouring off the buses and trains into them, no parents to be seen.

My neighbours send their year 6 children half a mile to school independently. We’re in the suburbs of Liverpool.

Just because you’re determined to raise scared and sheltered children does not mean the rest of us are.

38thparallel · 09/04/2026 22:04

That’s a nice thought but unfortunately that curly wire thingy would snap in a split second if someone tried to snatch it!

That’s true but phone snatchers don’t want to risk pulling a person over and causing them, the phone snatcher, to have an accident. They just want to grab the phone as fast as they can and be off.
Op, keep your phone hidden and your hand bag/backpack well secured.

champagnedates · 09/04/2026 22:06

What train company are you using?

Oh yes, it absolutely was.

You’d have a heart attack if you had any idea of what my mates and I got up to as kids/teens 🤣

Good grief, your poor DC. Somewhat overprotected - how are they going to learn life skills if you won’t even let them walk to the next street?

manateeplushie · 09/04/2026 22:41

I used to run the 30 mins home from the club down the side of the motorway because I was too tight to get a taxi! You'll be grand.

How is this possible 😂

Phone snatchers do not give a shit. I was mugged outside my central London office at 37 weeks pregnant (and absolutely enormous) in broad daylight. I doubt they can see the small string especially if they are coming up behind you

You are disconnected from reality my friend. Serious crime has declined by every metric in the past 20 years in the UK including London.

Petty crimes like phone snatching have surged because...the numbers of people wagging expensive phones around in public have surged. Not downplaying how horrible phone theft is but one tends to move on pretty quickly.

Your kid and the literally millions of kids who take public transport around London every year are safer now than 20 years ago. But sounds like that doesn't suit your worldview so probably not much point in calling out the data.

Lillers · 10/04/2026 06:45

You’ll be fine OP. Don’t spend the whole time worrying and therefore ruin your enjoyment of the concert.

Maybe do a dummy run of the journey in the daylight at some point before then so at least the station etc itself feels more familiar.

BoogieTownTop · 10/04/2026 07:11

I did it and got killed!

You live and learn.

They’ll be the OP in another 20 years, locked in a world they’re to scared to explore! Asking has anyone ever travelled 10 mins alone.
