School as child care

Differentforgirls · 07/04/2026 18:45

From another thread.

A poster said that state schools are there for helping parents to work. Therefore teachers are childminders. Teachers!

I think schools are there to educate our children and, though the staff go above and beyond these days, that is their primary function.

AIBU?

I don’t think people do think that. If they do, they’re a minority.

You’ve been quite rude and judgemental so people have called you out on that. I guess that’s why it feels like it’s been about you.

As have you. I won’t be replying to you again.

I don’t think I have been. I’ve challenged some of your comments but that’s not being rude.

You confused me with another poster yesterday so maybe you’ve done that again?

I don't think I have ever encountered anyone that thinks that way though. Surely everyone knows DC go to school to learn? That is why I asked what the comment was the thread is referring to?

Yes no one says it's primarily childcare. But the only context in which this is ever relevant is when schools close at short notice eg strikes and working parents are told off for suddenly panicking that their own working life is now significantly impacted. And suddenly teachers and parents are pitted against each other in some kind of battle that benefits no one. Working parents are dependent on teachers for their care as well as for provision of education. Teachers are dependent on a functioning economy to raise tax revenues to enable them to do their jobs. That's just how it is. And shouting "school isn't childcare" and saying this fact means people don't value education or think it's "primarily" childcare is just pointless noise.

So pointless that you’ve been banging on since the start with me mainly completely ignoring you.

You don’t get to dictate who engages with this thread.

Whenisitmyturntorest · 09/04/2026 11:45

The thread is discussing a comment made on another thread. We can all see how you have misunderstood or misrepresented people over the last 19 pages here so if you are not willing to post the comment word for word then the thread is totally pointless. You could have just opened the thread with 'my imaginary friend told me..'

Yes a bit odd to start a thread at all if you don't want people to reply.

I know you say this negatively, but if school hours replicated nursery hours I could work more, earn more and give us a better life.

Most schools do offer wrap around care from around 7.30am until 6

Kids often really like school wrap around care. Mine would tell me to go away if I turned up early!

muggart · 09/04/2026 13:04

They obviously fulfil both roles and anyone who argues otherwise is just pretending they can’t see that.

if they aren’t doing child care then who is responsible for the children when they’re at school? would the teachers not need to call an ambulance if necessary? do they not offer a tissue to a crying child? tell them off for drawing on the wall? so much of what teachers do is nothing to do with educating and to do with general child care. it has to be that way, especially for younger kids.

This is the most bonkers thread I’ve seen on here for a while. Moreover, it’s a thread about a thread apparently and I thought that was a mumsnet cardinal sin! Off to enjoy the sunshine again! Is it still raining in Scotland OP?

Katemax82 · 09/04/2026 13:26

Once my daughter's primary school had to close for some reason but they kept 1 class open to provide "childcare" for those who needed that kids at school so they could work. I'd never considered school as childcare before...

Sorry, just to add, it’s not a thread about a thread. It’s a thread about one post on a thread.

I guess it depends if you need it to be childcare or not.

There was a reason the children of key workers could still attend school during Covid.

That’s a one off and what else could they do? Send them all to walk home themselves?

You think that I am sad that an abusive small minded misogynistic poster with no recent experience of childcare or the workplace ignores my posts? 🤣

Your refusal to answer simple questions shows how flawed your attitude is. You are the OP not the moderator, I am welcome to challenge your ridiculous attitude.

FWIW if someone genuinely believed school was created SOLELY for childcare, I would say YANBU and that is why the voting is skewed here against the comments. That doesn't mean to say I don't think your belief that anyone thinks that way is far fetched. Especially given you refuse to quote the wording of the post you are referring to or invite that poster to contribute to your thread about them.

Differentforgirls · 09/04/2026 14:05

Still getting posts from a bored attention seeker. Sad really.

Calling me an attention seeker is being incredibly rude.
Im interacting with a thread you started. That’s how it works.
