Programmes that have aged poorly and programmes that have aged well?

What programmes that you loved have surprised you on rewatching?

I've just finished the first series of This Life and was surprised at how well it has aged for the most part (but so much smoking!). It was refreshing to see people with imperfect teeth and pubic hair and wobbly bums living in a grotty house share past their early 20s. I'm re-living my youth with the music too.

But Coupling! Oof! I remember it being really good but some clips I've seen (like making sex videos without consent and the way women are talked about) demonstrate exactly why I've never seen any re-runs.

I rewatched TNG recently, expecting it to have aged badly (TOS certainly has!) but I was really impressed by how the scripts still stood up well.

The Next Generation hung off Patrick Stewart, who is a terrific actor.

I agree with "Yes (Prime) Minister". The EU problem with British sausages being called something like "offal-filled tubes" still resonates today.

A bit OT, but someone mentioned Father Ted. Anyone know where/if I can watch it, please ?

All 4 (Channel 4 equivalent of BBC iPlayer) will take you back to Craggy Island

Carry on films were awful when they were new!! However I maintain the best line in any film ever came from a carry on film (Cleo) 'infamy! Infamy! They've all got it Infamy', absolute genius

It is a brilliant line, but not original to Carry on Cleo. Wikipedia: In 2007, the pun "Infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me", spoken by Kenneth Williams, was voted the funniest one-line joke in film history. The line was not written by Rothwell but borrowed with permission from a Take It from Here script written by Frank Muir and Denis Norden.

Aside from the many, many issues with On The Buses, it was pure nastiness how appallingly Olive was treated throughout - when she was actually one of the nicer characters, yet still shamed for nothing more than her plain looks.

Blakey was a deeply unpleasant chatacter, yet because he was a man, he was always treated by Stan and Jack with a kind of respectful friendly rivalry; yet Olive was shown no mercy at all and horribly abused for being a woman who dared not to be stunningly beautiful. Their mum was also treated dismissively and as nothing more than a 'service person', but because she was old, she at least was never judged for her looks.

The thing is, Olive isn't bad looking at all either. It's just a horrible programme, it was dated when it was made!

I don't recommend the books, I got a couple of chapters in to the first one before giving up - it's horrifically out-dated and he is a completely unlikeable sleeze.

The Inspector Morse books are unreadable.

The personality of the central character was changed completely for the series. Maybe not enough but it was heavily changed.

DeeperShadeOfBlu · 06/04/2026 06:06

Cold Feet is still fantastic now

I love Hi-De-Hi but that hasn’t aged well in the slightest

More love for the Thin Blue Line, the elephant impression still makes me roar with laughter, and Father Ted. Seeing Mrs Doyle running a pub in Coronation Street is so wrong 🤣

firstofallimadelight · 06/04/2026 06:43

Loved fawlty towers and Allo Allo but they couldn’t be made made now.

I know many of us of a certain age will gushing about how amazing Only Fools and Horses was; but there was a lot about it that was problematic and hasn't aged well at all. I think there's a good reason why it's never really shown on the main BBC channels anymore.

I also wonder if it may end up removed from the streaming services too 'at some point', if any of the rumours about one of the main actors turn out to be proven as true.

Aside from that, it's always annoyed me that OFAH flooded the schedules from the start as UK-wide entertainment, whilst the peerless Still Game was largely dismissed as 'Scottish interest' only. I'm from the English Midlands, so culturally no closer to a Cockney than a Weegie; yet I can still love SG for the unparalleled comedic genius that it was (whilst I've never found OFAH any more than smile-worthy, myself).

For what it's worth, I always thought that Dear John (also written by John Sullivan) was far, far superior to OFAH; but that too is very dated now and would never be made these days.

Which actor is there rumours about?

JustbrotherscarlenaNsoul · 06/04/2026 06:51

Think David Jason but don't know what the rumours pertain to.

JustbrotherscarlenaNsoul · 06/04/2026 06:51

Those kind of rumours are only ever about one or two things, usually harassment or underage stuff 😳 I hate to think what though 😞.

Summerhillsquare · 06/04/2026 06:56

Someone said the Upper Hand but actually I think the characters and even the situation are quite modern! Still funny and warm.

Weirdly, a lot of 80's American TV they show on that Legend channel is astonishingly 'woke': Knightrider; the A team, even to a point Charlie's Angels, because the themes are social justice and right overcoming right. And then Star Trek is in a class of its own. Even the tech in Knightrider stands the test of time.

Thank you! I hated it even at the time because of the character of Tom, and everyone said I wasn't understanding the show.

Ahh but Jerry had a secret thing for Barbara - I remember an episode where they were all drunk and he told her! I was annoyed with her for gently telling him off, given Tom was always flirting with Margo! Although I did think Tom did that to tease Margo rather than because he meant it. Agree he was immensely annoying though, and I always felt that poor Barbara just went along with his schemes to keep him happy like a good 70s wife! I'm sure she didn't really want to live like that, deep down

Foodylicious · 06/04/2026 07:01

House, even though it's not that old, has not aged well.
Men behaving badly & game on were not great at the time. Now today unwatchable.

Missed Friends 1st time around, discovered and loved it in my 20s. Now its awful.
Agree with pp that Frasier has aged better, though not as well as Cheers.

Had anyone rewatched Terry and June?
Might have to give it a go and see.

Myneighbourisanosyoldgit · 06/04/2026 07:02

'The Likely Lads', funny in the day but so sexist now.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 06/04/2026 07:03

One series I think has stood up surprisingly well is the original Randall and Hopkirk deceased. Surprising free of the racist and sexist language typical of the period and great plots. And yes - I know that Jeannie is the secretary - bur is treated respectfully throughout.
Compared to many series from the period (The Persuaders, The Sweeney for example) it's like chalk and cheese.
The Prisoner is still watchable too

Myneighbourisanosyoldgit · 06/04/2026 07:04

Currently watching 'George and MIldred' love the gentle humour and easy going story lines.

Piggywaspushed · 06/04/2026 07:06

My 21 year old loves Fawlty Towers. I think it was quite old fashioned , knowingly, at the time, so doesn't age per se (minus a few tweaks). Both my DSs in their 20s love Peep Show and some series of Blackadder. Younger DS likes Frank Spencer. Pratfalling doesn't age!

JMSA · 06/04/2026 07:06

Some Mothers Do Have ‘Em hasn’t aged well. How did I ever find Frank Spencer endearing or funny? The fuckwittery of him would have modern me raging! 😂

I love Only Fools and Horses though. Brilliant back then and now.

We tried to watch Game On again recently. Unbearably sexist.

I used to love this and popped into my head as one that might not have.
agree with other about sex and the city not ageing well and I still love Fraiser.
off to try this life as I missed it at the time

I think The Fast Show has aged well.

Some of it could be made today. But it made me think of a Harry Enfield sketch. A customer is in a posh cafe but moans the the price is too high for a Chocolate Tart. Harry Enfield moves the E to make it read Chocolat Tarte and the customer is happy and orders it.

I think it's easier/better to tell if things have aged well be knowing if GenZ/Alpha watch them rather than whether someone in their 40s/50s still does. That's partly nostalgia.

My two lap up The Simpsons and as I said Peep Show. They also watch The Middle. Can't remember what 'classic' DS was attempting the other day but it left him cold. It's mainly that older programmes are slower paced.

The first series of Homeland absolutely still flies. I wonder if Cracker would seem overly intense now?

Piggywaspushed · 06/04/2026 07:14

Oh, yes, and DS2 loves Frasier.

Piglet89 · 06/04/2026 07:19

I am also watching this life @HaveYouHadYourBreak! But for the first time.

I agree it’s aged well.

tattoolondon · 06/04/2026 07:19

Friday Night Dinner always watchable.

Film not TV but I tried showing the kids Twins and didn’t get past the first 10 minutes, horrible sexist leering from Danny DeVito

Iocanepowder · 06/04/2026 07:25

I still love Little Britain and Come Fly with Me.

I think it is people’s humour that hasn’t aged well.

People don’t want to accept that a lot of characters in those shows were fairly accurate portrayals of some people in society an exaggeration.
