Child given money by "Vicar" at school

So my 10 year old daughter (year 5) came home from school on Thursday and told us the Vicar (possibly just a trainee, I'm not entirely sure) who was taking their collective worship at school gave her £5 to "get herself an Easter treat" and that it was "just between me and you" I asked her if she told the teacher and she said no. I feel quite uneasy about this, should I say something to the school?

I admire your confidence, but they hardly have the best track record

Who the diocese or SGO?

That’s all I’ve got but at least an email address.

So basically, as with my school, no direct contact just the office contact which is generally not looked at during school holidays as office staff are only paid for term time ( some, like me for a week each at end of summer term and before autumn term).

and precisely because of that track record, procedures are now very tight and responsive, because even institutions can get better.

I spoke to our DSO this morning just casually and mentioned this thread. They were aware of it and we're at the other end of the country.

regardless, the right thing to do is speak to Diocesan SG, because even the worst institution can't do anything good if people don't report!!

Thanks for clarifying. Safeguarding officer should be working today though.

DSO will have an all hours number/email too

If you work in safeguarding you'd know the school is closed - Easter is an international holiday

I do work in safeguarding and I do know it's the Easter holidays. Schools often have a senior member of staff on duty over the holidays. If a member of the public can't get in touch with them (e.g. if no emergency contact details on the automated message) then the MASH should be able to.
I personally would not leave something like this until next week. What the OP does is up to her but since she is asking on this forum I'm saying what I would do.

Yes I guess so. Admin staff can’t work at Easter holidays is all I’m thinking. Even though some schools have holiday clubs.

Our primary school sent it out to parents in a reminder email at the end of each half term rather than put it on the website. It was an email address for parents to use specifically for safeguarding concerns. [email protected]

I’m not a parent it’s DNephew’s school. So they should’ve got the email I guess.

He was famous and it was leaked to the press. Completely different situation altogether. People get arrested daily and it doesn't make the press and that's the way it should be - innocent until proven guilty - no one deserves their reputation ruined because of idle gossip

In the UK, there’s no absolute legal ban on press/media naming someone who has been interviewed by police. They generally don’t until the person has been charged because of defamation laws. Generally a judge will decide on disclosure where minors or vulnerable people are involved, or whether non disclosure is a risk to the public.

Alexandra07 · 09/04/2026 13:44

Could you call the local lado if you don't want to call the police? If you are in Durham (maybe I misunderstood), that's the link:
https://durham-scp.org.uk/practitioners/allegations-against-staff-or-volunteers-lado/
Is that person employed by the school? I guess not, so they will only be able to escalate through lado.

How would you feel if something happened to another child during Easter holidays because nobody had reported the vicar earlier?

People get arrested and charged daily and don't have their name put in the press - that was the only point I was making. I don't think this issue is comparable to the issue with the radio 1 DJ that someone mentioned earlier - and he wasn't charged in the end

Most cases I see on social media daily - including where police disclose an arrest and charge - the person isn't named. The only ones I have seen in the press over the previous couple of years is where someone has been famous.

(I'm in the UK but not England and our laws are slightly different when it comes to procedures when someone is arrested or interviewed under caution).

I'm not going to call the police, people can disagree with my way of dealing with this but I really do not think it's a police matter at this stage.

I would 100% call out of hours SW and ask their advice. Waiting for school to open is not appropriate at all in my opinion. I have worked with children for 30 years. The school should instigate a CP investigation which will involve police and SW so waiting is only potentially putting other children and young people in a position of vulnerability and risk if this man did have awful intentions.

The OP hasn't said it's a man apparently. I thought it was but she's not specified it.

The balance of probability is that the person in question is male - 2/3 of the clergy in the CofE are men.

Although looking at the profiles/photos of newly ordained clergy in this particular diocese over the last three years, around 60% of new recruits are women. Therefore it might depend on seniority/area/role.

Tiggles · 09/04/2026 15:23

And of course, it may not even have been a vicar...

Because of the overdramatic replies to her

Do adults on this thread know the consequences of not taking seriously what children tell them?
I work in a child safeguarding role and would have phoned the school by now to find out if there is a senior staff member on duty over the holidays, and contacted the multi agency safeguarding hub (MASH).

I'm glad you have said this as I thinking exactly the same. Working in a school it's drilled into us about the importance of taking any concern seriously and not dismissing what a child says. A child needs to be able to trust that an adult will listen and believe them, not be dismissed as not telling the truth. That's not for us to decide, in instances like this it's the job of the professionals to ascertain the facts.
