AIBU to be fed up with walkers trespassing on our land?

We have a family farm that, unfortunately, has a footpath that runs through it.
The footpath turns and goes into some woods and off our property but many people ignore the turn and just carry on around our land. This is mostly dog walkers. They then let their dog crap on our fields and just leave it. We take a crop off the land- some years a hay crop, some years beans, others wheat- but people just don’t seem to care.
I am always polite when I see someone trespassing. I ask them if they know they have left the footpath and I point them back in the direction of it. 9 people out of 10 get really arsey about it. I get all the excuses in the book- “it’s just fields/I always walk here/I can do what I want/it’s just grass/other people do it”
Ive had off lead dogs chasing my liveries horses (who have permission to ride the headlands), sheep being worried, the list goes on.

There are plenty of signs telling people where the footpath is and where it isn’t, but they get ignored.

When I try to explain to people that they wouldn’t like it if I walked my dogs in their garden every day and let them poo everywhere, they just argue that it’s not the same coz “these are fields”
SIGH
The Covid year was a bloody nightmare with people wandering everywhere.
When did people get so entitled? AIBU to think that people just think they can do whatever the hell they want nowadays?

Why should you own fields and fields of land when some people only have a postage stamp garden, if that? The earth belongs to all of us.

But your garden doesn't belong to me. And presumably you don't welcome strangers to park up on your garden and use it as a dog exercise field?

They have the right to walk on the path on the RoW which they are not currently doing.

its OPs land, just like a house garden belongs to the owner, a factory site belongs to the owner of the site. OP is bending over backwards to help people still be able to access, despite shitty behavior with clear signs, being polite etc. she doesn’t sound awful at all, the melons she’s dealing with on her land the other hand

No they do not. What the hell gives you the right to roam on other peoples land?

You do realise that you’re talking about working farmland! You know, the place where your food comes from! Do you demand access to factories and businesses too? Farms are a business. Essential to growing the food you eat every day!

People have the right to pass and repass over the public footpath.

They don't have the right to litter.
They don't have the right to trample crops
They don't have the right to leave dog shit everywhere.
They don't have the right to harass livestock.
etc

Some of us grow the food you eat. The ingredients that create your bread, cereal… etc

But don’t worry, we’ll all give away all our land and stop farming and then you can see what happens to the availability and price of food when it has to be brought in from overseas.

What planet are you living on? Is it fun up there?

There's no right to roam anywhere you like in England.

We also have private property rights which is a bedrock of society in this country and have been in existence in some form or other for about a thousand years. You need to start a revolution maybe to change it? Good luck with that one. I'm not sure by the tone of your posts, Jeremy, that you are the persuasive type? Just my opinion of course.

Put a sign up saying

PRIVATE LAND - BEWARE - LOOSE BULL

What makes it my land? Same thing that makes someone’s garden theirs. And no, in England you don’t have the right to roam.
You either haven’t read my post about the fact they are crop fields, you are woefully uneducated, or you are simply a troll.

People like you would be the first to complain if the food prices quadrupled because our farming industry collapsed.

Ok great, Give us your address and I’ll be sure to exercise my right to roam across your garden with my dog

I'd go in the kitchen and help myself to a cuppa as well.

And you sound unbelievably dumb.

I assume you eat food? And who do you expect to grow that? What do you think farmers do?

And if farmer fields got trashed and crops destroyed then food prices will go up.

We don't produce enough food in this country and import huge amounts. Supporting British farming is so important.

LovesLabradors · 06/04/2026 08:33

"What makes it your land?"

I see we've reached the "property is theft" stage of the discussion!

This is your problem OP - people with attitudes like this, and the chap a PP posted about earlier, ripping the sign down saying "I don't like being told what to do." In other words, people who don't respect the land or the countryside, people who don't think the land should be yours in the first place, and think they should be allowed to go/do whatever they like.

I think introducing a Right to Roam law in England would be disastrous for this reason. The issue with crops is obviously bad enough, but the harm to the livestock - the ponies, cows, alpacas mentioned on this thread - is really awful.

SpaceRaccoon · 06/04/2026 08:37

I'm sure some entitled townie who thinks food comes from a supermarket would be a far better custodian than you OP, with your selfish food-producing ways. Hand it over!

Funnily enough, they wouldn't be happy if their property/workplace was trashed.

mbosnz · 06/04/2026 09:01

If we heard a little less wanging on about the 'right' to roam, and a little more about responsibilities if we wish to continue roaming, that would be good.

Maybe if a landowner could evidence a certain number of offences against the land and livestock of a certain threshold of seriousness to permit restrictions, that would help remind people that with rights come responsibilities.

ParmaVioletTea · 06/04/2026 13:22

Absolutely @mbosnz

I'm reading this thread in shock at the stupidity and harmful ignorance of some posters, and in huge sympathy for you @Pricelessadvice

If trespassers are only half as thoughtless & ignorant as some posters on this thread, you must have to forbearance of a saint!

HelenaWilson · 06/04/2026 14:18

Pity that post above was deleted. It showed just how lacking in knowledge and understanding some people are.

Where people do have access, this is what happens:

A close up image of a section of Hadrian's Wall with its destinctive square blocks. A knotted purple and green plastic poo bag has been pushed into a crack in the wall

Hadrian's Wall rangers say walkers hide poo bags in its stones

Northumberland park rangers are asking people to treat the wall with respect and take poo bags home.

CatrionaBalfour · 06/04/2026 14:21

Oh my god - on Hadrian's Wall? Unbelievable. Some dog owners really are so thoughtless and stupid.

SatsumaDog · 06/04/2026 17:16

it about having respect for other people’s property and way of life. I know next to nothing about farming and living rurally,
but I know enough not to leave dog shit and litter everywhere and to trample and damage land and fences. This is someone’s livelihood.

In the rare event I did something wrong or trespassed onto someone’s property in error (yet to happen), I would sincerely apologise when challenged. I certainly wouldn’t give them a mouthful of abuse.

I don’t think it’s lack of knowledge in most cases. It’s an entitlement and complete lack of respect for someone else’s way of life.

I know, utterly gross. I also don’t understand why they go to all that trouble to hide it. Just take it with you! I couldn’t leave a bag of dog shit someone and walk away. Where do they think it’s going to go?

They don't care. It's someone else's problem.
