To judge parents who do not even tell their children Easter is a religious festival

I'm shocked that 12 out of 20 children in my childs class had no religious knowledge of the meaning of Good Friday or Easter Sunday for Christians.
All aged 9yrs old.

I know i should not say this but i wonder how many of these posters who blatantly mock christianity and Catholics, were first to try to get an Irish passport after Brexit.
Christian values are very much upheld in Ireland. So you don't want to respect snd uphold our beliefs, you just want to grab the passport!

You don’t need to be a Christian to be Irish or get an Irish passport. There are plenty of Irish people who don’t believe in God at all.

Daffodildahlia · 05/04/2026 06:25

You can say what you like, because it could well be true. Some atheists seem to be very self-serving.
There has certainly been a huge demand for Irish passports recently.

The foundation of everything about religion is self serving. The entire point is salvation, or heaven, or similar (for most standsrd religions at least, certainly what people are mostly talking about)

I can confirm that there are PLENTY of agnostic and atheist Irish people! A bloody 30 year religious/political conflict in the north and decades of abuse of power by the clergy all over, alongside all the abuse of women and sexual abuse of children put plenty of people off continuing to believe in god and/or religious ceremonies and rules of any kind.

southcoastsammy · 06/04/2026 16:46

Oh, and British people
aren’t flocking to get Irish passports to be closer to priests - it’s to remain EU citizens. Obvs.

Because it's an Islamic custom.

That makes no sense.

British is a nationality, Islam is a religion.

That's like comparing potatoes and daffodils.

Quite. Easter rituals are also a matter of religion, not nationality.

So why are some people talking about "British Muslims" ?

That isn't so.
I'm not sure who you have been listening to?
Not for Protestants, anyway.

At the heart of Protestant belief is the conviction that salvation is entirely a work of God’s grace. It cannot be earned, merited, or bought through human effort. It is an unmerited gift from a loving God to a fallen humanity.

So how would you class Judaism?

Needmorelego · 07/04/2026 08:50

People who are British citizens who follow Islam as a faith 🤷
What don't you understand ?

Surely they are just Muslims ?

Is this some sort of weird test? Are you actually confused about whether Judaism is a religion or a nationality?

Boy oh boy!

No, no test.

I'm not confused but I think you are.

So, again, is Judaism a religion or a nationality?

It's OK to say if you don't know.

Daffodildahlia · 07/04/2026 08:35

So why are some people talking about "British Muslims" ?

Because lots of people are British (nationality) and Muslim (religion). One can in fact be multiple things. I for example am Dutch, atheist, (nationality, belief) lefty (political affiliation), feminist ,(also an affiliation). See how it works?

Judaism is a religion. Some think it is also an ethnicity. It is not a nationality.

@Daffodildahlia doesn’t think that Eid should be celebrated in Britain even those it’s the faith of several million British people

Judaism can be thought of as being simultaneously a religion, a nationality and a culture.

I'm surprised at how many people don't know that.

I've never said that at all.

Please stop putting words in my mouth.

You seem to have a real problem, with this - care to explain why?

Well yes there doesn't need to be a label but many people go on about the UK being a "Christian" country when less than half the population actually considers themselves Christian.

There is no country called "Jewish".
Even Israel has non Jewish citizens.

England has an established Church.
Its bishops sit in the House of Lords.
The King is both head of state and also supreme governor of the Church of England.
One of the monarch's titles is Defender of the Faith.
Because of this, anyone that claims the UK is not a Christian country ignores both historical and constitutional reality..
The legal system was founded on the Christian principles of justice and fairness,
So it is impossible to deny the UK is a Christian country without attempting to rewrite history and ignore our heritage.

You have posted that you don’t think Eid is a British custom when it obviously is if you look at the celebrations across the UK at Eid.

That's my opinion. which I am entitled to have.

However, I never said I thought people shouldn't celebrate it.

I don't think Diwali is a British Festival but don't have an issue with people marking that (likewise the Chinese New Year)

It depends which Jewish authority you talk to.

Some class it as an ethno-religious group, others as a Nation.
