To judge parents who do not even tell their children Easter is a religious festival

I'm shocked that 12 out of 20 children in my childs class had no religious knowledge of the meaning of Good Friday or Easter Sunday for Christians.
All aged 9yrs old.

Heads up lads, we'd better stop going to the pub on 17th March. We're not allowed.

What on earth are you talking about ?

SugarPuffSandwiches · 05/04/2026 18:55

Daffodildahlia · 05/04/2026 18:51

Because it's an Islamic custom.

I'm a bit confused by your posts.
You realise that Eid is a British tradition if you're a British Muslim, right?
I mean, it's not my British tradition and I'm not celebrating Eid as I'm not Muslim.
Plenty of British people are Muslim though, so why wouldn't they celebrate Eid?

Needmorelego · 05/04/2026 18:56

Daffodildahlia · 05/04/2026 18:51

Because it's an Islamic custom.

Nationality and Religion aren't the same thing.
Customs and celebrations evolve and change over time.
Does it matter?

Daffodildahlia · 05/04/2026 18:51

Because it's an Islamic custom.

A faith of many British people. No different from following the Jewish, Catholic , Hindu, Sikh religions.

Needmorelego · 05/04/2026 18:56

Daffodildahlia · 05/04/2026 18:55

St Patrick's Day presumably......

You asked me for my opinion and I gave it.

Don't get all bent out of shape if you don't like it/agree with it.

I never said they shouldn't !

pointythings · 05/04/2026 19:02

Daffodildahlia · 05/04/2026 18:19

@Parker231 It does if it’s celebrated by British people

How does that work ?

If British people celebrate - The October Revolution, Up Helly Aa, USA Independence Day, The Bangladesh Liberation War and Canadian Memorial Day does that make them British Customs?

I don't think so !

Well, Up Helly Aa is celebrated in the Shetland Isles which are arguably British.

I'm not bent out of shape, you're entitled to your opinion.
Your posts were just a bit confusing that's all, as you seemed to be saying that why should British people be celebrating Eid? I was just pointing out that a lot of British people are Muslim.
It being an Islamic celebration is neither here nor there.

Exactly. And I'm not a Christian, therefore I do not celebrate Easter.

The whole debate about what is and is not British is toxic, racist, xenophobic and used to manipulate people. It's ridiculous - whatever happened to live and let live?

I think the Shetlanders would argue about that.
They identify more with Scandinavia than Scotland, which is why they won't vote SNP as they don't see themselves as Scottish.

In 1468, the impoverished Christian I, King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, pawned the Orkney Isles to James III of Scotland in lieu of a royal dowry for 50,000 florins. The Shetlands were pawned for a further 8,000 florins.

There have been moves to rejoin Norway -

If judging other parents over a make believe story, makes you feel better about yourself and gives you some self gratification, you do you. The rest of us will be out here thriving and enjoying the holidays in any which way we can. Might I suggest getting a grip?

So you've been voted the spokesperson for religious matters in Eire have you ?!

Much the same as many people on here, I base my opinion on what I see around me. And what I see is lip service to religion for the sake of tradition.

pointythings · 05/04/2026 19:05

St Patrick's Day, obviously.

Yes, but I was wondering why that poster thinks they aren't allowed in a pub on that day ??

If it's satire it's wasted on me 🙄

It was definitely satire. Because some people on this thread are being very dogmatic about what constitutes 'British Tradition'.

Daffodildahlia · 05/04/2026 19:23

@EdgyUmberCrab Much the same as many people on here,

Oh, so there's a lot of Religious Irish Spokespeople on this thread .

That's interesting. 🙂

Please don’t use the term EIRE
@Daffodildahlia 🙏

It’s Ireland

EIRE has negative colonial connotations

As St Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in all of Ireland, many actual Irish people don’t go to a pub - we go out for the day, take our kids to the zoo or beach, spend time with family.

Exactly. I’m Irish and have never been to the pub on St Patrick’s day. Wouldn’t enter my head that that’s how Patrick’s day is spent. We have a family dinner to mark the day, like at Easter.

Edited

Only ever went to a bar when I was in the US on St Patrick’s day in the 90s.
I had no idea why they were all drinking green beer and had dyed the river green.

I was told that’s what they do in Ireland
🤣

southcoastsammy · 06/04/2026 12:30

My US colleagues were explaining to me about the green beer, the green river, the endless weird ‘Irish’ cocktail shots they drink and were horrified to hear that we mostly spend the day doing much more wholesome activities, particularly when we get a long weekend depending on when the 17th falls!
I wouldn’t mind but half of them doesn’t even claim Irish heritage!

Agree and when you tell them all this green stuff isn’t actually traditional they just don’t believe you.
I ended up with a green tongue for days 😤
