To judge parents who do not even tell their children Easter is a religious festival

I'm shocked that 12 out of 20 children in my childs class had no religious knowledge of the meaning of Good Friday or Easter Sunday for Christians.
All aged 9yrs old.

I agree.

The horror that is Eid al Adha persists for some reason, even in a supposedly civilised country like UK 🤔

Why does the sacrifice of a sheep or goat bother you so much? The animal is eaten. It's no different from animals being killed for food in an abattoir.

You seem to have a specific problem with Islam. Why is that?

Daffodildahlia · 04/04/2026 15:57

How many and which Eid?

A quick search - Around 3.9 to 4 million
Muslims in the UK celebrate Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. When we lived in the UK our neighbours always invited us to their EID celebrations.

You seem to be rather uninformed about Helal slaughter. It's very different to mainstream slaughter, because it's non-stun slaughter.

What a strange, illogical, uniformed conclusion you have jumped to. I don't have a problem with Islam. I have a problem with non-stun slaughter and that includes Kosher.

(All my Jewish friends are vegans BTW)

This isn't a religious issue, it's an animal welfare issue. If you can't understand that, then you have missed the point.

Honestly? I couldn't care less. As I said, time spent raised on a farm. I've seen animals killed without stunning.

And your Jewish friends are vegan? That's great. Lots of Jewish people aren't, and yet you don't mention kosher slaughter at all. That's called hypocrisy.

So if you have a problem with Eid al-Adha, you must also have a problem with kosher slaughter. Correct?

I did at 18.24 today. Are you not following the discussion?

Yup, sums up your attitude nicely.

And yet you instantly leapt to slate Islam without mentioning Judaism at the same time.

For someone who "couldn't care less" you certainly seem to be banging a drum here.

I'm not sure who your post was directed to but it certainly doesn't apply to me as I'm vegan.

Having said that I would be interested to see where your figures come from when you say Nearly 90% are ore stunned.

Daffodildahlia · 04/04/2026 16:40

Now that's interesting you say they celebrate both Eids.

Some people on these threads criticise the Easter message because they say the Good Friday story of the Crucifixion is too graphic for children.

However, they don't seem to blanch at Muslims buying a live goat or sheep at Eid alAdha and cutting it's throat in their back yard or in sheds and allowing children to watch.

Well, as a kid , my grandad (and everyone in the villages that had /raised pigs) always slaughtered a pig right before Christmas (can’t remember what religious thingy is on the day- 20th of December) in front of all of us children, so it would be rather hypocritical of me.

My grandad did the same
Its disgusting and cruel

Im not a hypocrite. I’m not responsible for the actions of my family and capable of judging who ever I wish

It is in the order of 80% I can’t remember exactly
so approximately 20% are not stunned

No animals slaughtered for Jewish consumption ie kosher are stunned
So 100% are not stunned

Apologies for the derail OP

Religion makes the world so much better. <sarcasm>

This thread really is really just devolving into yet another example of the harm that comes from placing belief above fact. If we can test and know things to be true or false, we can agree on them. If we are still studying the details and learning, we can accept that we do not know enough yet. The human mind is amazing and can discover and learn. If we simply hold beliefs, then we fight and hate without reason.

I mentioned previously I have faith and I guess a set of beliefs that go with them. I can also point out “plot holes” in the Bible and happily debate them. I hold no hate for anyone.

Well I didn’t mind it, wish I could share that with DD (grandad and his pigsand patch ofland long gone) and my favourite vegetable is pork. Hence the hypocrisy.Grin

As veganism is offered the same protections as a religious belief (something that vegans have actively campaigned for), you're just criticising others who don't share your belief.

Daffodildahlia · 04/04/2026 21:50

Yes, I'm allowed to do that.

So what is your point ?

Nogimachi · 04/04/2026 22:37

Fully agree with you. Even if you aren’t religious, it’s part of general education/upbringing to understand the origin of a key holiday.

Nogimachi · 04/04/2026 22:40

Upsetbetty · 02/04/2026 16:13

And as non Christians??

It comes under general
education and understanding, surely?

But is that a full stun or what is known as "reversible stunning" which leaves the animal conscious and alive until the throat is cut ?

https://halalification.com/knowledge-base/food-beverages/ethics-culture-religious-beliefs/halal-and-humanitarian-animal-treatment/can-halal-slaughter-include-reversible-stunning/

ClarityofVision · 04/04/2026 23:08

I am so confused OP.

You say "Christian values are very much upheld in Ireland. So you don't want to respect and uphold our beliefs, you just want to grab the passport!" and in reply to how many adults would know? "Well i'm Irish so i'd say 100% of the population".

But in your original post you say "12 out of 20 children in my childs class had no religious knowledge of the meaning of Good Friday or Easter Sunday".

So are you talking about Ireland or some other country?

If your child's school is not in Ireland, why do the people of that country have to respect and uphold your beliefs?

And if your child is at school in Ireland where you say 100% of adults know about Easter and uphold your beliefs then how does that tally with 12 out of 20 children not knowing about Easter?

p.s. are Irish atheists stripped of their citizenship?
