Those astronauts must be slightly insane.

I mean obviously they’re highly intelligent individuals and must know what they’re doing… but the risks are so huge and they have families. To me it’s just madness.

This is what they have trained for years for. Yes there’s risk. But there’s risk in most things - driving, whatever. But here this is something extraordinary that people dream about.

For all the people who wouldn't go, I'm with you. I hate flying and take off and land with my eyes shut, fingers in ears with a logenzer in my mouth.
What I find incredible is 8 years ago I visited a clairvoyant (sp?) who said I was an astronaut in a former life with my own spaceship and crew, I was captain. What's really odd is he went into vivid detail about each crew member and I had an immense feeling of knowing them well. I was eventually voted off and the feeling of betrayal made my heart race

It’s exciting watching the launch but I can’t help thinking that we’ve made such a hash of things on earth, why do we want to export that chaos to the beautiful moon and then onto Mars.

Yeah I can picture all the little (cartoon style) aliens running around 'how do we stop them? Keep them away! Look at the right bloody ness they've made if Earth- we don't want them here! Especially not that orange one!!'

poor little buggers

If some clever people managed to build a city on a planet I am thinking it would be like Dubai.

I remember a few years back that guy parachuting from the edge of space, he could see the curve of the earth. That was scary enough.

It would be like the old oil rig days, and workers would fly off to Mars for a few months to mine things and then come back. It would all be very industrial , but then there would be a Las Vegas bit. 😂I think I'm gonna stay on earth.

They’re amazing and could transform humanity. It was only a few hundred years ago that explorers set out to discover America … and look what we have now

I wish they’d turned back before they found it!

PollyBell · 02/04/2026 03:10

Well I presume the misunderstood don't beleive it is happening anyway as it is all one great conspiracy with the space not exisitng, moon landing didn't happen, and the earth being flat, dont get me started on the ''fake'' dinosaur fossils that must be a mirage

but yes I agree with you

keepswimming38 · 02/04/2026 03:14

I find it annoying tbh as we are struggling on the planet to stop war mongering and to get the basics right and yet we are doing fly byes of the moon.

Eggandspoonrace2 · 02/04/2026 03:45

What an incredible, wonderful, amazing opportunity, a once in a lifetime adventure, for the betterment of science, for all human kind - my God if I was offered the chance, even now in my ageing body, I'd go.

There's always a miserable reason to squat like toads and grimace and grumble. The world is ALWAYS at war.

They are SO lucky. Good for them.

Ad Astra, and God Speed.

Indeed. Human endeavour, pushing forward, learning for the sake of learning which in itself brings great benefits to humankind. They are reaching for the stars quite literally, this outlook is how humanity flourishes.

I feel very sorry for anybody who doesn't get this, their outlook is drab, dreary and tiny minded.

While I, like most people, find the scientific aspects of space exploration fascinating. Given the environmental impact humans have had on our own planet, why should we be allowed to explore space?

Beyond the simple argument that "it is there," what are the actual benefits of space exploration?

"Allowed to" - by whom? You appear to think you have some right to stop others from space exploration. You don't. HTH.

If you haven't bothered to simply Google the numerous benefits we reaped as humans from scientific exploration before making this daft statement, I'm embarrassed for you. Truly.

You dont have to get aggressive just because someone has a differing opinion

Yes, you should avoid doing that, as obviously you're not referring to my response.

Probably not an unbiased source, but there are genuinely a lot of innovations that have come about as a result of space programmes

Anyone who types in "benefits of space exploration" can come up with dozens and dozens of past, present and future benefits. It was either a disingenous response or an extremely ill educated one, but either way she could just type in "Benefits to humanity of space exploration" and spend some time reading.

DolefullySingingMotherfucka · 02/04/2026 04:17

I think it's wonderful and would go myself if they would have me. In fact I'm available for the next flight if NASA decides it needs more non-physicists with dodgy hips in space.

SouthernNights59 · 02/04/2026 04:43

Well I think it is an incredible waste of money and resources, shameful really considering what a state earth is in and all its problems.

thinktoomuchtoooften · 01/04/2026 22:24

The cost is also madness imo. There are better things to spend millions (or is it billions?) on.

there are some good videos and guides that put this into perspective. The costs are huge, from the perspective of an ordinary person - but from the perspective of a nation? Space exploration, even for America, is a tiny tiny tiny fraction of what they spend on other things, and absolutely dwarfed by most other national costs (especially defense spending). When you consider the advancements to humanity, and the specific technologies that have come from it - it is actually a real bargain.

Aintgointogoa · 02/04/2026 05:01

@LondonRidge i think you are being ironic ? Yes, look closely at what we have now...😳 The Americas were alway there, and did not need to be 'discovered' by a prannie who thought he was in India 🧐
The astronauts on Artemis are fantastically brave. I couldn't step into their
shoes !

Don't be so daft OP.

Why climb mountains? Cross deserts? Explore caves?

For that matter - give birth? Drive?

Hardly comparable

Why so contemptuous?

We've soundly bolloxed up this planet. Why do we need to spread like a tumour elsewhere?

dinbin · 02/04/2026 05:32

I get scared in an airplane so obviously not for me but we need people to push boundaries & explore otherwise we wouldn’t progress.

Well if you can't trust a rocket scientist...!
