Those astronauts must be slightly insane.

I mean obviously they’re highly intelligent individuals and must know what they’re doing… but the risks are so huge and they have families. To me it’s just madness.

OP posts:
Dontlletmedownbruce · 01/04/2026 23:54

They are just glory hunters and the whole thing is a shameful waste of money.

Batties · 01/04/2026 23:54

If I didn’t have children, I would go in a heartbeat if I was able to.

What's happy about it?

It is positive. A new space mission. A pursuit of knowledge.
What is bad about it?

I would sign up to the one way mission to Mars if I could.

BMW6 · 01/04/2026 23:57

Don't be so daft OP.

Why climb mountains? Cross deserts? Explore caves?

For that matter - give birth? Drive?

LondonRidge · 02/04/2026 00:00

They’re amazing and could transform humanity. It was only a few hundred years ago that explorers set out to discover America … and look what we have now

A despotic orange maniac causing global havoc?

You do realise that Moon Rovers isn't a football team in the premier league...

I mean if couldn't do it but all astronauts must be aware that things can go wrong
The more they try to explore space the greater the risk.

@thunderful I'm also old enough to remember Challenger, so this makes me a bit apprehensive. I hope it goes well and they all come home safely.

I am old enough to remember the Apollo missions. As a child I remember how we all used to gather round the TV to watch the take off and splash downs. The first man on the moon happened on my 7th birthday!

Very excited about this and we stayed up to watch the launch. Of course I would be too terrified to do anything like that but I applaud the courage of everyone involved

MonstrousRegimentRocks · 02/04/2026 00:22

I'd love to go, what an amazing adventure. I'm fascinated by space.

ExBert80 · 02/04/2026 00:38

If some clever people managed to build a city on a planet I am thinking it would be like Dubai.

I remember a few years back that guy parachuting from the edge of space, he could see the curve of the earth. That was scary enough.

Growlybear83 · 02/04/2026 00:47

I can clearly remember the excitement of the first space walk and moon landings. Although Im often apprehensive about doing risky things out of my comfort zone, since I was a little girl I’ve always said that there is nothing I would want to do more than go into space. Im really excited that space exploration is starting again.

Same here! I remember the Apollo missions so well. What an incredible time that was. I'm very excited about this new era of space exploration.

I couldn't help but think that we'd be wise to sort our planet out before go looking at the moon.

I think the idea is that we might eventually be able to get resources from other planers to help with our own depleted resources.

Parrotstwice · 02/04/2026 01:22

Yabu
That's their job. What they've dedicated their lives to.
I mean you could say this about people working for the fire service or soldiers or tonnes of quite dangerous jobs
Its not "mad" to care deeply enough about a certain cause that you'd risk your life for it. They believe they are oing great things for humanity. And that may be a matter for debate but you cannot deny they have a point at least.

Yes this!! We could protect our planet massively if we moved industries onto other planets or moons. Keep earth as a green paradise and use planets that have no life to mine for resources

YourSassyPanda · 02/04/2026 01:25

I suppose they must love what they do and be experts at it plus they’re potentially making history. It’s a cause bigger than the man if you like.

ItsNotOrwell · 02/04/2026 01:37

They’re doing it to potentially establish a permanent presence on the Moon before any other country does. It’s the classic cold-war Space Race thawed out for the new Millennium. That isn’t the astronauts’ doing, of course, and I admire their courage and intellect.

Not the OP but I don't get wanting to do any of those things either 😆
I'm not much of an experience person. Everything on earth has been pretty underwhelming so far-maybe there's something better out there but the moon seems pretty underwhelming too. Might be a nice view of earth but that's about it shrugs guess I'm just not easily impressed. I do quite like the idea of being off this planet though.

Fill me in please, I’ve deleted the news app as I was getting anxious about health stories !

You don't need an app to get news?
check out any reputable website. Or watch the news on TV

I've always been fascinated by space, and if you'd have asked me 30 years ago if I wanted to go to the Moon I'd have jumped at the chance!
So I'm not judging anyone going to the Moon, good on them, amazing opportunity.
Nowadays though I'm happy just to watch/read about it as I'd probably break either physically or mentally if I went up there 😭😂

Oh my goodness he died last year in a paragliding accident.

I remember his jump from the edge of space, I didn't realise he'd died 😓

EmeraldShamrock000 · 02/04/2026 02:05

I’m sure it is the ultimate goal for an astronaut. Wouldn’t be my idea of fun.
