AIBU to feel annoyed by a payment reminder after 36 hours?

We have a weekly service at our house. The company sends us a bill a few hours after finishing the work and we pay by bank transfer. The cost can vary so we don't pay by direct debit.
Recently, we received the regular bill but didn't pay immediately. The bill was followed up with a reminder 36 hours later. We are longstanding customers. This left me feeling really narked. AIBU?
YABU: They did the work, so you should pay them straight away.
YANBU: They should give you a week to pay. This is pushy behaviour.

So you forgot yet are 'narked' that they reminded you . What if they hadn't reminded you , just hope they let it go and you get their services for free ? . I would be embarrassed i forgot not bloody angry at them !

I take it you’re not a small business owner!
Of course you should pay asap. You do not wait 36 hours to pay for a service that has been completed.

The key here is 36 hours - less than 2 days. Up to 3 is immediate payment. 4-5 is reasonable. More than that is later than preferable.

No problem paying. I just forgot.

That's why they send reminders lol

IchiNiSanShiGo · 01/04/2026 20:53

If you normally reliably pay on the day, or within 24 hours, I can see why this mysterious service provider would have assumed you’d forgotten and sent you a payment reminder. You’re being ridiculous to be offended by it.

🤣🤣 I will keep reading but this is where I'm assuming this is a reverse or wind up.

Not with this op

Minusone · 01/04/2026 20:59

Tbf it’s not even 2 days never mind “days on end”

Stnam · 01/04/2026 21:05

I wouldn't get offended by it, but as someone who does self employed work and also uses self employed people quite often, I would say it is unusual to issue a reminder quite so quickly.

No problem paying. I just forgot.

And that’s why they had to remind you.

Plmnki · 01/04/2026 21:06

You lost your right to be marked the minute you admitted you had forgotten to pay them!

if they didn’t remind you, how long do you think they should wait before you remember to pay?

also, would you be narked if they forgot to turn up? I bet you would.

pay on time in future.

Newusername0 · 01/04/2026 21:06

It sounds like you usually pay promptly, soon after asking how much you owe. They probably noticed a change in your usual pattern and assumed you forgot… which you had.

Or… as you say it’s not a company with staff, maybe the individual needed the money quite urgently for their own personal expense .

Either way, I definitely wouldn’t take it personally.

Then surely the reminder was helpful lol

Yes, our main income is a small business. That’s why I feel I know something about the matter. We would never chase payment after 36 hours. It’s extremely short sighted as you realise you would annoy the client.

Yes well you are far distanced between you and your circumstances and other businesses and sole traders who are not as privileged as you

Surely you pay before exiting a restaurant, after eating your meal there?

No, OP tells them they'll have to wait 51 days, cos...AI...

BlueDressingGowns · 01/04/2026 21:14

Have RTFT so this has probably been mentioned, but the may be keen to get your payment before the end of the tex year.

bigboykitty · 01/04/2026 21:15

I presume OP will be binned off by this couple ASAP. They'll make some polite excuse because they know they're dealing with a 'tricky customer' and if they told the truth there'd be an awkward exchange.

No, I think an example of best practice is being quoted.

Yes, I do, too.

you clearly don’t because you chose not to pay on the day and are now bothered when they asked for their money that they earned and are behaving quite like a snob.

My income is a small business. I wouldn't think twice about sending a reminder after 36 hours as most pay new on the day or in advance.

No this isn't Eastenders so no binning off

3 days is 3 days.

Our windows cleaner had the money in his bank account before his van had left our drive yesterday. That's immediate.

I think they could have chilled a bit. Probably an admin thing, getting tasks out of the way!

Op You just said dh business is 14 days there business obviously isn’t. Op they did you a favour by reminding you sooner rather than later your narked about the wrong thing you were in the wrong not them that’s why your narked because they didn’t let you get away with a few more days. Did you even apologise to say sorry I forgot thanks for your swift reminder. Some people just need to own there in the wrong and this time you were and you didn’t like being told. People’s mental load is bad enough with day to day stuff people like you are mentally draining imagine if all there customers were like you. It’s irrelevant if they’re not skint.
