AIBU to feel annoyed by a payment reminder after 36 hours?

We have a weekly service at our house. The company sends us a bill a few hours after finishing the work and we pay by bank transfer. The cost can vary so we don't pay by direct debit.
Recently, we received the regular bill but didn't pay immediately. The bill was followed up with a reminder 36 hours later. We are longstanding customers. This left me feeling really narked. AIBU?
YABU: They did the work, so you should pay them straight away.
YANBU: They should give you a week to pay. This is pushy behaviour.

They are right to remind you.

anothercoffeepls · 01/04/2026 14:35

Give you a week to pay 🤣🤣🤣

DiscoCherries · 01/04/2026 14:35

This has to be a joke

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · 01/04/2026 14:36

Why would they give you a week to pay if it’s weekly service? Yabu just pay when the bill gets there, if you can’t afford it cancel their service.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 01/04/2026 14:36

What are their terms and conditions? If it is payment in 24 hours YABU then it is perfectly acceptable to send a reminder. You don't get to set payment terms they do so no they don't have to give you 7 days to pay if that is not what is agreed.

If they don't have clear payment terms then they should fix that so everyone knows what is expected. Late payers are a pain in the arse they are politely letting you know to pay up if you want their services.

Tableforjoan · 01/04/2026 14:36

If they had to send a reminder after 36 hours then you’re a slow payer.

Why should they wait days on end for you to finally pay.

You pay Tesco as you get your shopping. You pay for your petrol before you leave for forecourt.

Cough up.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 01/04/2026 14:36

What?
I've heard it all now.

2025emanresu · 01/04/2026 14:37

Direct Debits don't have to be fixed amounts or at fixed times. You could ask them if you can set up a Variable Direct Debit to make it easier.

No problem paying. I just forgot.

Why aren’t you paying it when service is complete?

SUUUUUUNNNNN · 01/04/2026 14:38

Can’t be real, can it?!

Arthurnewyorkcity · 01/04/2026 14:38

36hrs, yeah youre taking the mick and you usually pay quickly theyd naturally assume an issue surely. Its a minute job to bank transfer

Fair enough you forgot it happens so why would a reminder bother you? How is that pushy? How many days after pay day would you wait to remind your employer they have not yet paid you?

Bookloverforever · 01/04/2026 14:39

Nope.

it’s weekly , you knew it was coming in some form even if the bill changes slightly.

tbh I think 24 hours is more then generous in this situation.

unless of course you’re about to do a massive drip feed and lists of reasons why you shouldn’t have to pay on time , but if that’s the case it should have been pre arranged with the company.

sorry I know it’s not the response you wanted but you should pay in a timely manner…. Maybe they thought you had forgotten and sent a gentle reminder 🤷‍♂️

I wouldn’t want to wait for payment

Lucky they reminded you then😉

In all seriousness, payment reminders seem to evoke such BIG feelings in people, when it is literally what it says on the tin, a reminder.

Then the reminder helped?

LifeBeginsToday · 01/04/2026 14:40

Is this because you can't actually afford the service?

I work freelance, and I give people a month to pay, and generally leave it a week before chasing up after that, so I wouldn't pester anyone after 36 hours, although it can get pretty annoying when people put off paying for as long as they possibly can.

But if you usually pay right away, they could have just thought you'd forgot and they were trying to be helpful, or they really need the money right away. It's not really worth getting worked up about.

Well don't bloody forget! You'd be up in arms if they forgot to come and do the work for you won't you!

Lostallhistory · 01/04/2026 14:42

SixtySomething · 01/04/2026 14:37

And they reminded you. They had no idea how long your forgetfulness would last.

SarahAndQuack · 01/04/2026 14:42

It's probably an auto-reminder.

If it bothers you that much, check their T&Cs - they might stipulate payment within 24 hours, as others say. If so, it's hardly pushy.

AuntieDen · 01/04/2026 14:43

probably their system generates automated reminders, don't take it personally.

firstofallimadelight · 01/04/2026 14:43

If it’s dog walker we get an invoice at the start of the week, I pay Monday morning the walks are Tuesday and Wednesday.
Why should people chase you for money, how would you feel if your work paid you a couple days late? When would you remind them?

If you give people a month to pay, that sounds like you do one off projects for people. It's a different situation from a weekly service where it would be reasonable to expect immediate payment or payment within 24 hours.
