To absolutely hate the phrase "to fall pregnant"

CoheedandCambria · 27/03/2026 17:45

I had never heard this phrase until I was well into adulthood and it sounds so wrong to me.

You fall ill, you fall from grace. To 'fall' has entirely negative connotations in my eyes. If ever anyone says they "fell pregnant" it always sounds like an unwanted accident to me but people say it of wanted and planned for pregnancies 🤷🏻

wtf? Never ever heard that

I really wish I hadn't, it offended my ears...

Nowhere near as bad as someone saying that they "caught pregnant" or "we'd only been trying for three months when I caught".

Doesn't even make grammatical sense!

In what area of the UK is that a phrase?

West Midlands.

Sofado · 27/03/2026 18:09

I agree. It sounds so completely wrong to me.

In what area of the UK is that a phrase?

Is it said in a negative sense - as in 'caught out'?

ruethewhirl · 27/03/2026 18:11

Yeah, I find it irritating too. As a pp mentioned, it makes it sound accidental so sounds weird when used outside that context. Also sounds like something out of Catherine Cookson.

CoheedandCambria · 27/03/2026 17:50

Oh that is a good point. Didn't think of that.

You also fall asleep....

CoheedandCambria · 27/03/2026 18:13

Rokabe · 27/03/2026 18:03

Well you don’t see it as “entirely” negative !!

CoheedandCambria · 22/03/2026 19:09
Wednesday is red in my eyes. And I like it when Christmas falls on a Wednesday - it feels right.

Yes yes yes, read my updates.
I love that you searched me to try to prove me wrong.

You also fall asleep....

And that definitely isn’t a negative

To fall in to slumber. Lovely

hope the op has seen now that it’s not “entirely negative”!!

Not an expression I would ever use because it sounds as though the woman concerned doesn't know how it happened. Whoops! How did that sperm manage to fraternity with my ovum?

Fraternise!

This image dates back to my confused teenage years, when I became convinced that sperm could leap up from the pavement into the vagina, after a biology lesson which emphasised that sperm are hardy survivors, like cockroaches.

Oh come on

you hate a word. I’m going to spend all of ten seconds pasting your username with keyword “fall” and…. Bingo “Christmas falls on a Wednesday”

LVhandbagsatdawn · 27/03/2026 18:15

It's just an old English hangover. Fell could mean to happen by chance or to cause or to change.

Fall asleep / fall in love / fall pregnant. It fell to me to do it.

It's not negative at all. It's just our modern view of "fall" is e.g. to drop from a height or to "fall from grace", for example.

What would sperm be doing on the pavement?
and you’d have been knickerless!

and you were a teenager??!

Westfacing · 27/03/2026 18:16

I bet the Princess of Wales has never been described as having fallen pregnant!

BeaTwix · 27/03/2026 18:16

In ED patients with items in their rectum almost always tell you they fell on them (the vacuum cleaner, their kid’s Barbie doll etc).

fell pregnant brings the same connotations for me. Some poor unsuspecting woman accidentally impaling herself on a giant erect penis. All by mistake.

‘Caught’ should be illegal

No need for alarm 😄 I was a very shy teenager with a vivid imagination. There were gaps in my knowledge because I moved schools three times between the ages of 11 and 15.

CheeseLand2 · 27/03/2026 18:20

What I really hate is women (or more irritatingly men) say “oh WE’RE pregnant”

no! No you’re not.

Yes - literally my first update was - "good point. Didn't think of that." When someone said about falling in love. I am not doubling down babes

Eww yeah, caught is grim

HumerousHumous · 27/03/2026 18:22

I think it’s pretty much common usage now. “To become pregnant” is an alternative but a bit weird.

It’s not the same but what I really hate is “We’re pregnant!” Especially if said by a man.

I agree fall pregnant sounds like an accident
