My DM is on a tour via Dubai and she won’t cancel

My DM is due to fly on Wednesday via Dubai to Thailand. The tour is like £5k and they won’t let her cancel so she’d lose her money (minus airfare as Emirates is giving refunds).

AIBU to think she’s being irresponsible by going?

I think they are still stopping in Dubai -at 11.55 on radio 4 today they talked about this - lots of cheap flights available

She’s got medical insurance, but she’s aware that at least it won’t cover her in Dubai.

It most likely won’t cover her in Thailand either…

ChefsKisser · 23/03/2026 17:08

I'd go. A friend of mine just got back from a weeks holiday to Dubai! Flights were fine.

Do you mean that she doesn’t have travel insurance?

Nope, she doesn’t. She only ever gets international cover.

I think the whole insurance won't be valid if she's going against FCDO advice though could phone insurance company and ask. You may be able to get specialist insurance but its probably pricey.

Some people have run up massive bills due to delays but depends where you are delayed and cost of hotel rooms there. Dubai is pricey. Thailand can probably get cheap accommodation. Though that appears to be easing.

We cancelled our flight on that route (to Sri Lanka) but could get a full refund as booked direct with airline and hotels/safaris were refundable. The cost of alternative direct flights went up from £1k each to £4k each in a month so we are going elsewhere.

My parents 75 and 76 just returned from month in thailand no issues with flights. Their lives, their money theirs to enjoy.

Did they fly via Dubai / Doha?

Why irresponsible? She doesn't answer to anyone she is not a child

Nobody would know it because it’s not UK/EU based so that’s a complete moot point.

She might not be a child, but she can’t have such double standards to say she can’t do at lot of things (like doing online check ins, getting e visas, or requesting for airport assistance, and a million of other tiny things I have to assist her with) and then ignore me for something she actually didn’t understand until yesterday.

Well it’s called MegaTravel but there’s absolutely nothing on their website.

She’s very aware of the insurance she situation and doesn’t care :/

Then leave her to it. Either it will be fine or it won’t she will have to sort out getting back home.

there are other routes to Bangkok and if push comes to shove the airline will
route a different way

No, she’s travelling with other “seniors” and she’s travelling with a friend of her I’ve never met who gave her false/irrelevant information so it’s not like I think whoever is with her is super tuned in.

OP posts:
OMGitsnotgood · 24/03/2026 07:16

i wouldn’t travel against FCDO advice (currently ‘essential travel only’ to that area). Id also worry about return flights if things get worse, being stuck somewhere and not being covered by insurance if that’s somewhere we’ve been advised against travelling

Comtesse · 24/03/2026 07:16

Don’t help her on admin if it’s driving you mad. If she’s able to fly round the world she can do her own boarding card.

flights are still being cancelled at random, that’s why.

Flights are only being cancelled if it’s not safe to fly
Your mother’s flight hasn’t been cancelled yet so it’s safe for her to go!
we flew on Saturday, no problems at all

No, we don’t live in the same country (we live oceans apart) but we definitely get different news updates of what’s happening in the world.

That’s kind of like my point….. either she’s useless as she claims to be or she isn’t

So where are you and where is she?
Do you think your news is ‘better’/ more accurate so to speak?
Broadly though she’s a fully functioning adult and it’s up to her what risk or hassle she subjects herself to. There are also signs of this rolling back as Trump has already blinked and the Europeans aren’t joining his war party (let’s hope!!!)
