Snobby about chain food

limeandwater · 23/03/2026 11:54

Are people on MN snobby about chain restaurants?

I only ask because some of the comments on the £52 lunch thread.

I consider myself a bit of a foodie and enjoy fine dining.

But I also enjoy an American Hot at Pizza Express, a burger at GBK, the Katsu curry at Waggamamma's, a wrap at Nando's.

Am I a wrong un?

Your dog eats other dogs shit. The fact you wouldn’t feed it a fishfinger is hilarious

Actually, she doesn't do that. We keep a very close eye on her and she normally keeps well away from other dogs and their residue!

JLou08 · 23/03/2026 17:06

Chain food provides predictability, you know what your getting and it tastes as you expect it to. That is a huge benefit for some people, especially ND people who may struggle with change and/or have restricted eating. The snobbery around it is annoying.

There are a lot of eating disorders, anxiety and wanting to appear middle class, on here, it results in what you read.

First reply pretty much nails it. People assume that if they only have freshly cooked or baked meals (that are cooked from scratch,) from fresh ingredients they grew themselves, or purchased from a terribly posh independent shop. that they are automatically middle class/upper middle class. And they would NEVER have fast food from chain eateries..... 😱

Anyone who has Maccies, KFC, Pizza Hut, or a meal at Wetherspoons, or anything from a chip shop, is working class through and through (in their opinion,) and they don't want people thinking they are GASP! WORKING CLASS!!!!

So, as I said, the would NEVER admit to eating in these places. And they do develop this hilarious snobbery about it all! It's quite amusing really! 😆

I don’t mind chain food per se, but I usually find it’s overpriced for what you get. Also, as it’s not their own business staff just don’t care as much so service often not great.

Where an earth has that come from?

I literally started a thread that I thought people were snobby about chain places.

Comment feels pretty nasty and not sure why.

This has nothing to do with foodbanks.

What exactly is your problem? OP is simply asking a question.

Can we not discuss restaurants because some people use FOODBANKS?

Simonjt · 23/03/2026 17:15

I worked in a few high end restaurants in my late teens and early twenties, they all bought certain items in ready made, ravoli, pastry, gravy, ice creams, sorbet, salad dressings, sweet and savory tarts, poached eggs, even sousvide meat and fish thats then finished off under a grill or in a griddle.

Unless it has a michelin star you can almost guarantee part of your meal will be pre-made off site in a factory.

If you eat something it shouldn’t matter if its chain or independent, liking the food is the only thing that matters. The whole “I wouldn’t eat at x” is the same as the child at primary school who says “well my daddy earns your than yours”.

Scarfitwere · 23/03/2026 17:16

limeandwater · 23/03/2026 16:59

It has.

I like 3 star Michelin dining and I also like a cheeseburger from Maccies.

Same...no snobbery here...but it's the in between ones that are expensive and poor quality that get my goat! Prezzo is the best example... £18 quid for a ready made pasta and sauce. It really isnt snobbery. I dont mind wetherspoons either for the record. It doesn't pretend to be anything its not and doesn't charge a fortune!

igelkott2026 · 23/03/2026 17:16

We have a few Italian restaurants in our town and they are all a bit crap, I prefer Pizza Express!

People rave about the independent places and I wonder if they've eaten in the same place as I have.

I'm a snob about places like Burger King. I also own my cars rather than leasing them (but they are both old).

nevernotmaybe · 23/03/2026 17:17

Simonjt · 23/03/2026 17:05

Your Indian (they’re actuallg almost guaranteed to be Bangladeshi) restaurant will be using ready made gravy.

What Makes you think that? Nearly all the main dishes at any local Indian here, are Indian/British Indian origin. Even some of those that arent entirely, aren't just from Bangladesh, like Bhuna from a shared area.

Specials can be from anywhere but still mainly Indian and other countries that aren't Bangladesh.

I probably did go through a period in my late 20s/early 30s when I was a bit of a food snob, but I've gotten over that. I was gutted when McD's got rid of their breakfast roll as it was the one thing I could buy on the motorway that actually tasted good and kept me going when driving the kids for hours to matches/events/parties/school.

A breakfast "wrap" just isn't the same.

I have never really loved fast food breakfasts, I think I have an issue with the texture of the egg.

I will probably get roasted by mumsnetters who don't do anything other than roast their own, but Macciess coffee is pretty decent!

Honestly the desperation to appear middle class on Mumsnet is real. I often think there are people here who were left out of the school mum cliques or don’t have many friends, so try and create a superiority complex
For me, it’s not about chains as I love a wags or burger kitchen, even a pret. I just resent paying ££ for a plate of tomato pasta at zizzi or ASK, and I find pizza express dry and bland.

Wickedlittledancer · 23/03/2026 17:23

God can people stop using the word baffled. It is the most commonly used word in here, and nearly always done in a passive aggressive way,

agorm1 · 23/03/2026 17:23

I am not sure if it counts as a chain as there are just three restaurants in London but CERU is fantastic. And reasonably priced too.
