Full length giant mirrors , propped up in people's homes , are they safe ?

I have seen some beautiful free standing full length mirrors in people's homes.

Am I being unreasonable in thinking that they are not safe to be just propped up in the corner or a room ?

I have them, perfectly safe but I don't have small children or dogs, would rethink if I did

Nourishinghandcream · 23/03/2026 11:37

Properly installed, they have an anti-tilt strap on the rear.

HugHog · 23/03/2026 11:38

I agree with you. There was an influencer whose toddler died after pulling over a freestanding mirror.

AmberTigerEyes · 23/03/2026 11:38

Agree! They should be attached to the wall in some way to be safe.

redskyAtNigh · 23/03/2026 11:38

Safe in what respect? If they are not positioned where you are likely to walk into them and you don't have small children or animals that run about, then they are probably no less safe than (e.g.) a small item of furniture.

Ablondiebutagoody · 23/03/2026 11:40

I can't see how they would spontaneously jump up and flip over.

Ponoka7 · 23/03/2026 11:40

The people who I know who have them use the same straps that can be put on a TV, on a stand and attached to the wall. If you have children, you should have all furniture fixed to the wall.

Pollyanna87 · 23/03/2026 11:42

They have to be attached to the wall in some way. If not, they’re completely unsafe.

cillacilla · 23/03/2026 11:42

We have one, it’s been under the bed since my daughter was born. I have only seen myself from shoulders up since then lol. They are too interesting to little crawlers to be safe imo

OnePearlPanda · 23/03/2026 11:42

I have one - as others have said above, it's been fixed to the wall with a strap so can't be pulled over.

MummyMIH · 23/03/2026 11:43

Definitely need to be secured if you have children or pets. I’ve also seen the story of the social media influencer who’s little boy died after their mirror fell on him.

Dartania · 23/03/2026 11:44

As others have said, they should be attached to the wall. We have one in our bedroom but it has a strap fixing at the back.

Tel12 · 23/03/2026 11:45

They are potentially dangerous and need to be fixed.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 23/03/2026 11:56

I knocked one over and got cut up a bit when I was at a house party as a teen but I am still alive so no harm done. I much prefer a fixed mirror though and I wouldn’t have one around little kids or drunk people.

Well it depends doesn't it. Depends on the room, depends on whether you have kids / pets running around, depends on the size and weight of the mirror....

TheeNotoriousPIG · 23/03/2026 12:00

I wouldn't have one, mainly because I'm a bit clumsy, and I have pets, some of whom find their own reflections VERY interesting (or sometimes offensive, in the case of a cat).

We got a mirror from the range which hangs on hooks on a door. It can actually be fixed to the door and barely weighs anything. Could work inside a wardrobe door.

Ive seen this and it scared me straight. What they went through was harrowing. All because of a giant mirror propped against a wall 😔

TheJoyousHiker · 23/03/2026 12:07

Worse still, I often see mirrors propped up in the mantlepiece.

RedPony1 · 23/03/2026 12:10

i have two, but i don't have children or a dog who cares about their reflection.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 23/03/2026 12:15

We moved into our house 12yrs ago.

My large mirror has been in the same place tipped against the same wall for the whole time!

Wickedlittledancer · 23/03/2026 12:29

We have one in the bedroom. It weighs a ton and is perfectly safe. I’d not have it if I had small kids though,

CatamaranViper · 23/03/2026 12:33

Mine is secured to the wall but you can't tell from looking at it. It's a nightmare to move though

10namechangeslater · 23/03/2026 12:40

No not for children they aren’t

BauhausOfEliott · 23/03/2026 12:42

As people have said - they're usually secured with a strap at the back.

However, if they're not, it obviously depends on where the mirror is located and whether you've got kids or pets running around - same with things like open fires or garden ponds.
