Would you let your 12 year old go to funfair alone?

She doesn’t want me to go with her, she’s going with her brother who’s 10. She’s used to taking buses and using Google maps, but this is a 40 min journey and 2 buses. I’m worried that they would get separated or lost , would you let your child go to a funfair alone?

So, not alone but in charge of her younger brother.

Probably not. Id take them, sit with a coffee and a book whilst they roam the fair.

Blankscreen · 21/03/2026 12:58

No.

I'm confused as you don't seemed concerned about the 10 year old that is effectively also going alone.

You go with them or they don't go at all. Simple.

IAxolotlQuestions · 21/03/2026 12:59

No. I’d be happier at 13 and would definitely at 14.

Smartiepants79 · 21/03/2026 12:59

Not if she’s not going with a friend and not in charge of a 10 year old boy. Is he at all reliable? Will he do what she says??

Griselinia · 21/03/2026 12:59

Nope

SugarPuffSandwiches · 21/03/2026 12:59

No, I wouldn't be comfortable with letting my 10 and 12 year old go off alone to a fair.

Trinity65 · 21/03/2026 13:00

No.
I know she was 10 and not 12, but remember Lesley Ann Downey. Taken by Monsters, at a funfair

Scarlettpixie · 21/03/2026 13:00

No

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 21/03/2026 13:00

Due to the distance and their ages I probably wouldn’t. Can you compromise and take them then go to a cafe or something and meet up with them afterwards.

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 21/03/2026 13:00

Nope, not in those circumstances

redskyAtNigh · 21/03/2026 13:02

I'd be happy if she was going with a same age group of friends, and ideally I'd want an adult to pick them up at the end.

But 2 buses with a 10 year old? No.

Makemineacosmo · 21/03/2026 13:02

At 12 and 10? No.

IloveJonBonJovi · 21/03/2026 13:03

Absolutely not. Fairs are known for teen gangs and pick pockets. DD goes to our local one at Xmas with her friends now but wasn’t allowed until she was 13 and only with her age or older

Randomchat · 21/03/2026 13:03

I'd take them and let them wander around while I sat and read my book.
But I would not let them go alone.

SooooAIBU · 21/03/2026 13:03

Yes, if it was local and she was with friends. No, in these circumstances due to distance and that she would be responsible for her younger brother.

letshearitforDavid · 21/03/2026 13:04

That’s got to be the strangest description of ‘alone’ I have seen yet.

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/03/2026 13:23

No. As you say they could get separated or lost and 10 is too young to navigate an unfamiliar place and situation alone. I think it’s fine if they don’t want mum tagging along and watching them on the rides etc, but I’d accompany them, find somewhere to sit with a drink, and give them very clear instructions that this where they return to if separated an possibly e.g. every half hour to check in just so you know nothing’s happened.

Abd80 · 21/03/2026 13:24

I wouldn’t let your 12 or 10 year old go at all unless an adult was accompanying them.

Id do this tbh.
Go with them and meet back up later.
Have some time to myself and have a mooch about.

user2848502016 · 21/03/2026 13:27

In a group of friends during the daytime yes, just her in charge of a 10 year old no, especially as it’s not an easy journey.
I’d go with them, give them money and go and have a coffee while they have some time at the fair

Uppitymuppity · 21/03/2026 13:27

Definitely not, I have a 12 year old and wouldn't dream of it in these circumstance, too many wrong people about aside from anything else. Id be taking them both and staying with them also, not letting them roam around alone.

FionnulaTheCooler · 21/03/2026 13:28

Probably not. I let my DD go with friends for the first time at the age of 14 and even then one of her friend's parents wasn't happy that I didn't stay to supervise them, I dropped them off and stayed in a cafe about 10 minutes walk away.

TheSoapyFrog · 21/03/2026 13:31

No, not in those circumstances. I might agree if it was a group of similar aged friends, but not being responsible for a younger sibling. I would compromise by going with them on a train, but not sitting next to them, and then being at the funfair sitting away or in a pub nearby.

susiedaisy1912 · 21/03/2026 13:32

Nope. You re the adult op. They either go with you or not at all.

PleaseStopEatingMyStuff · 21/03/2026 13:34

Nope
