To cancel plans to travel to Europe next week in case oil issues mean I can't get home

The trip is fully refundable

I very much doubt you'd have issues on a European trip next week. It wouldn't even cross my mind not to go. But if it's fully refundable and you will stress then cancel?

MyJollyMentor · 17/03/2026 20:33

Where are you travelling to Europe from?

PoliteBee · 17/03/2026 20:33

Where are you going and what form of transport?

Doggymummar · 17/03/2026 20:34

I guess you are driving. I've not seen any petrol issues worldwide

Czerwonitz · 17/03/2026 20:34

Flying to the south of spain

Apparently the trains are unreliable because of the derailments so no obvious alternatives if fuel runs low

Guess could live in Spain until my non EU allowance runs out

Are you driving?

sonjadog · 17/03/2026 20:35

I see you are flying.

No, I would not cancel a holiday to Spain.

allchange5 · 17/03/2026 20:36

There are hundreds of thousands of flights in Europe every day OP. Nobody is cancelling them!

PoliteBee · 17/03/2026 20:37

"the trains are unreliable because of the derailments"

Eixample · 17/03/2026 20:38

This seems like a bit of an overreaction. And the trains might be unreliable but you‘d get there eventually.

Yes
Drivers are striking unpredictably

They are - SAS are cancelling over 1000 flights in April for just this reason. However, they have 800 per day so it’s by no means a large percentage. I wouldn’t personally cancel a European trip just now, but I can understand the concern.

HeddaGarbled · 17/03/2026 20:39

I’ve been thinking about this. The figure that keeps being quoted is that 20% of the world’s oil comes through the Hormuz Strait. So that means 80% is coming through other routes. 80% is quite a lot.

I understand there’s an impact but I can’t see European transport systems coming to a standstill and certainly not next week.

This is my concern. Sure it might be temporary but a nightmare if it crunches while far from home.

Derailments are trains coming off the tracks

Yes I speak English too.

The drivers are striking because the derailments indicate unaddressed safety issues.

I thought any “rationing” would hit later tbh.

What derailments have their been and what has this to do with oil prices?

Not if people stockpile

What derailments have their been and what has this to do with oil prices?

Multiple derailments of intercity connections in Andalusia and around Barcelona (which connects into France)

Obviously it is relevant because if the planes are not running then trains would normally be the backup

I'd take the chance and go now. If this lunacy continues you might not be able to/be able to afford it, six months hence.

True

This is getting silly now.

Tableforjoan · 17/03/2026 20:48

We go away this month not worrying however we are meant to be driving upto Scotland in a few more months and thinking of cancelling depending on how the land lay once the final balance is due. Either on the fuel costs alone or possible shortages.
