Why am I still getting these letters ?!

teletubbyy · 17/03/2026 15:19

I filled in the declaration form in December when we moved to our new home. I literally watch YouTube for the kids, bing or Miss Rachel etc and not the live stuff. And on the evening we watch Netflix or Disney+.
I think it’s terrible they use scare tactics. Should they not be leaving me alone since I’ve filled in the declaration form?! I have major anxiety and do not need to be worrying some blokes going to turn up on my doorstep demanding I let him in.

Why am I still getting these letters ?!

I’ve just tried to call them to speak to someone about receiving these letters, you just go round in circles with an automated woman ! Nightmare.

All you say if someone turns up is; I've filled in the declaration. Goodbye.

They cant demand to enter. You are not required to speak to them. Dont overshare and start stuttering and give them an opening for conversation. Dont engage.

If he says I can see a TV in your house.

I've filled in the declaration - goodbye. Shut the door.

There are plenty of resources online which advise on what to do. You’re not doing anything wrong. Just bin it and ignore it.

EveryKneeShallBow · 17/03/2026 15:29

It’s disgusting how they hound people. It absolutely shouldn’t be allowed.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 17/03/2026 15:31

I get these letters as well, rather nasty tone to them. I had one with a threat of them turning up, did they? No they did not. Now I am apparently 'under investigation', well they can go ahead, I don't watch live TV and have Netflix. The letters get shredded.

WinterBlues26 · 17/03/2026 15:31

In your shoes I would fill in the declaration once more in case there was a glitch (doubtful) and screenshot it.

Then ignore any future letters.

icouldholditwithacobweb · 17/03/2026 15:31

It is very annoying, I have never owned a TV since buying my house, don't watch OD TV online or anything, never had a need for a license, even let a guy in once to verify I do not in fact have a TV in the house, fill in the declaration every year...and STILL get the threatening emails and letters. I have started ignoring them altogether now, there's no point filling anything in or responding as they keep coming no matter what.

Holdmybeermoment · 17/03/2026 15:33

They have no right to enter your house so if they come out, you just refuse them entry and say “we don’t watch live TV and I’ve filled out the declaration.”

You are allowed to own a TV so it doesn’t matter if they see one through a window.

BillieWiper · 17/03/2026 15:35

I think just bin it. They're just trying to put the fear into people to make them pay. As if they can do anything.

I remember when they tried to say it was illegal not to get a smart meter. Yeah great way to introduce a concept. Basically criminalising people for not paying private companies for products or services we neither want nor need.

SnowyRock · 17/03/2026 15:40

Since you've moved recently i wonder if the old occupant hasnt updated their address on their iplayer account. Weve never had anything like that

Catza · 17/03/2026 15:48

We did actually have someone turn up at our house once so they very much still do it. In our case my ex forgot to change the address on TV license so we were happy for them to sort it. Since separating, I've not watched any live TV so I just fill in the declaration every couple of years and receive occasional letter which I don't even open until the time of the new declaration comes around.

teletubbyy · 17/03/2026 15:52

I’m actually so pissed I’m off with them, this is the second letter we’ve had since the beginning of the year. Who do they think they are ? It’s nothing more than bullying.
I saw that thread the other day going on about what a great thing the bbc and tv license is etc, fine if you watch live tv and are happy paying it but I think personally it’s an absolute scam.

Well I hope if they do turn up I’m not due on my period because I tell you, the absolute rage I get 😆

A former colleague of mine did not own a TV set; his only interest was in some key football matches, and for those he would go down to the pub!
But the Licensing Authority could not get their head around the concept, and he learned to observe the cycle; mention was made of detection vans in the street, which could even tell which channel was being shown, possible fines of up to £1,000, increasingly threatening in tone, then it would stop. After a pause, the polite reminder stage would begin again. He gave up replying to them, as they could not comprehend a home with no TV. Nothing happened.

Harvestmoons · 17/03/2026 16:08

I've been receiving variations of this letter for years, they become increasingly more threatening. I bin and ignore, no one has turned up on the doorstep as yet.

Meadowfinch · 17/03/2026 16:11

I sent their last ceo a LinkedIn message with photos of my TV licence and asked him to explain why his organisation was continuing to harass and bully me. I got an apology and it stopped.

Or you could ignore them as being irrelevant rubbish. Or send a solicitor's cease & desist letter.

nevernotmaybe · 17/03/2026 16:13

I dont know what people do to keep getting them. We have filled in the declaration consistently for the last 10 years when it runs out, and haven't received a letter once during any period after where it was still valid. Same for my parents.

Never understood the paranoia of the "don't let them" in people. Most of us would pay if needed, and don't because it isn't. We wouldn't care if a guy doing his job has a quick look while we chat. Definitely all about feeling special.

They definitely need to stop the nonsense and put it into general taxation. It is done in other countries without an issue, the complaints about remaining somewhat independent are silly mostly and laws can be drawn to do it still even with taxation. Strengthen the BBC, strengthen the various other things the licence money goes to (thay people don't realise), increase the budget, and stop any complaints about being chased.

Shakshuka4ever · 17/03/2026 16:14

I bin them. It's shitty system

Well I’m not sure what I’m doing to get them, I certainly don’t think I’m special ! I wish they’d piss off

@teletubbyy I thought if you use a TV then you pay for the license. It doesn’t matter what you watch on it.

Why do you think you shouldn’t pay?

Its not paranoia not to let them in they have no legal right of entry so why should they come in?
Its their assumption that people must be watching tv without a licence that is wrong.

If she uses a TV set whether she watches live or not, she does need one!

Maybe its you that need to check the guide lines
Its nothing to do with owning a TV anymore because these days many people own TV,s for streaming purposes etc
Its weather you.watch live TV, you need a licence.

Lathemistress · 17/03/2026 16:29

I haven't done the declaration this year, it was a waste of my time as we still got letters with an increasingly threatening tone. As mentioned by someone up thread, they don't seem to understand or believe that anyone can just not have a TV. We don't and if they want to waste their time coming to look around for one they are welcome. As yet no-one has turned up.
