AIBU - primary age son wants to take BBQ spare ribs to school tomorrow

11 yo son has come back from his father's (divorced) with leftover takeaway BBQ spare ribs. Lots of sauce. He is in a special-needs class which can get rather rambuctious at times.

I think allowing him to take them is asking for trouble. Just ... no. He thinks I'm unreasonable and so does his father.

AIBU - he should be allowed to take them
YANBU - he should not be allowed to take them.

Well since hes in a sen class, they're usually more relaxed

My dd goes in with sausages which they microwave for her. Every day. The same sausages. For three years 😅

As a one off, im sure they wouldn't mind tbh, especially if they're already microwaving food x

tarheelbaby · 15/03/2026 19:49

Sorry, lack of imagination here and a bit clueless, what do you foresee happening?

Does your DS often/usually take a packed lunch?

TheGriffle · 15/03/2026 19:49

Can’t he just have them for tea instead? I’m thinking more of the mess at lunchtime which wouldn’t be fair on the staff to have to deal with.

UserProfile · 15/03/2026 20:05

@mumofoneAloneandwell those sausages must be well and truly cooked by now?! 😉

😄😄😄😅 you know what I mean

Octavia64 · 15/03/2026 20:07

i am quite confused by this.

would this be for his lunch? Do they need heating up (sorry I am veggie very little experience with meat)

assuming they can be eaten cold like a sausage roll I don’t see the issue.

Why do they need microwaving? Aren't they already cooked? If not then, no, don't take raw meat to school but cold cooked meat would be fine.

MrsKateColumbo · 15/03/2026 20:10

I love spare ribs but the sauce is sticky/messy and not really packed lunch suitable.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 15/03/2026 20:13

What’s the issue with it OP? Is it the messiness?

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 15/03/2026 20:19

yes, Im thinking the messiness.

Other than that I wouldnt have a problem. I thought of sending him with a packet of wet wipes but honestly I could still foresee some real problems. My son's 11, but the class is mixed ages and if someone gets a bit silly then the sauce could end up where it shouldn't.

The teacher isn't always around at lunchtime, I should make it clear; deliberate decision, they try to encourage the children to be responsible for short times left alone. I'm just thinking that BBQ sauce, which can stain workbooks and shirts, might be a bit much!

It just seems like asking for trouble really, to me.

He and everyone else usually takes sandwiches.

No just 1 minute in the microwave to warm them up

Cold ribs are nasty imp, but he could eat them cold 🤷‍♀️

I dont think school will be happy with that tbh
My son is in a special, school ,I can just imagine it being a load of mess and possibly a choking hazard, maybe let him eat it for breakfast instead ?

Alaap · 15/03/2026 20:28

Maybe if he's desperate for them, scrape them off the bone and into a sandwich, but in your shoes I'm not sure I'd be sending something that could get that messy in.

Tableforjoan · 15/03/2026 20:29

One of the children in my youngest class regularly takes left over take away pizza so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Eenameenadeeka · 15/03/2026 20:30

Definitely too messy I think. He could have them after school.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 15/03/2026 20:37

Oh I'll suggest he has them for breakfast! great idea - thanks!

I just think the potential for mess is too high, especially as they're having a special day with special clothes (a play they are putting on)

OP posts:
Seashor · 15/03/2026 20:43

I’d be furious and yes I do mean furious if I had to clean the mess up that these will make! Just say, ‘No’ for goodness sake.

Randomchat · 15/03/2026 20:47

I'd tell him to eat them at home.

If that's really not going to go down well I'd scrape off the meat and he can take it in a plastic box and eat with a fork.

KellsBells7 · 15/03/2026 20:58

.(edited as poster above had said same thing)

You cannot microwave raw sausages.

They are obviously cooked, cold sausages which the are warming in the microwave.

You tell my kids that and I'll kill you 😂

Iloveeverycat · 15/03/2026 21:47

So they have a fridge to store them then.

winterwarmer8274 · 16/03/2026 00:58

Hopefully he'll like the idea of ribs for breakfast! I wouldn't let him take them to school.

You could suggest rib sandwiches and strip all the meat off?

I was talking about the ribs not the sausages although actually you can microwave raw sausages. In the 80s when microwaves were a new thing people used them for everything even a whole chicken.

I wouldn't send food to school to be microwaved even to be warmed up.
