Teens with zero desire to travel

LyricalBoudicca · 15/03/2026 00:45

Bit concerned that my 2 teens never express a desire to travel ever (NB they go abroad with me frequently but that’s always been down to me). They remind me of my grandparents who hardly ever left the county they grew up in which was probably due to lack of financial means. If I die I can see them perfectly content never to initiate a holiday. Has anyone else got teens like this? Or do mine have an unusual lack of curiosity?

Does it matter?

Travelling doesn't make you inherently better. Let them be.

4wardlooking · 15/03/2026 00:50

Are they old enough to go off travelling without DPs?

It really does expand the mind, though.

Piletka · 15/03/2026 00:54

My older one is like this. I have the same concerns about lack of interest in different foods, cultures, places, ways of life. Travel is such an enriching experience that offers so many opportunities in life. Not sure what the answer is to be honest, hoping it changes in the future.

@LyricalBoudicca I suspect it's down to spending their whole life on their phone. If they are still young enough to force a foreign trip, make sure it's full of art and culture.

It really does expand the mind, though.

I really don't think sitting on a crowded plane, then getting a bus to an AI resort which you never leave expands the mind, and millions of people go on those types of holidays.

There are numerous places in the UK which can expand the mind, you don't need to go abroad.

I don't think OP is talking about teens who are keenly exploring UK culture or nature sites. It sounds as if they don't want to leave their home town.

@LyricalBoudicca is right, I think, to be concerned at their lack of curiosity.

That’s not necessarily true though.

No but they have both have the view that people make too big a thing out of going on holiday in general. I genuinely think they see no value in the whole exercise. I suppose I’m a bit sad that they are too content in their small world.

For sure, if the teens aren't very bright or curious.

oviraptor21 · 15/03/2026 01:08

My parents and now my sister and family have never been abroad. Nothing wrong with their minds - easily top 10% intelligence, well read, curious about history, science, nature etc etc. They're just not bothered. They get plenty of enjoyment out of their UK holidays and save a lot of money and stress.

Really need the laugh emoji for this one!

4wardlooking · 15/03/2026 01:11

They know you have this covered for them, so there’s no need for them to think about it at the moment.

If they were refusing to go on the holidays you booked then I can see why you might be concerned but otherwise no I can’t see why you are worrying when they are not in position to make decisions about going abroad. It’ll come with age and money.

Or if the travelling simply involves lying around a pool in a hotel with lots of other British holiday makers, or getting drunk in Ibiza or Benidorm

Curious about everything except other cultures?

You don’t need to travel to a place to learn about its culture. Books and other such things exist.

Yes, you would believe that if you've never travelled abroad and experienced a country's culture.

PollyBell · 15/03/2026 01:48

Well parents take to airport transfer to a resort spend the week in a bar or fighting over a sun chair then back to airport then fly home that is not experiencing anything

Not everyone wants to travel no idea why this is anything to worry about

But it’s nothing like experiencing it.

The example you’ve giving is not travelling.
That’s just a really awful holiday.

Needmorelego · 15/03/2026 03:04

Some people are homebodies and can still enjoy their lives.

To me it is not travelling but to other people it is

WhereDidIPutThat · 15/03/2026 03:11

Their ages are very relevant.

How old are they?

Octavia64 · 15/03/2026 03:19

Honestly of all the worries you could have this one doesn’t register.

people worry about their teens being pregnant, getting pregnant, self harming, having an eating disorder, failing their GCSEs, being too lazy to work for their GCSEs, being in an abusive relationship etc.

that they (currently) don’t want to travel barely registers on he list of things that could go wrong.
