Bringing a sandwich while waiting in Minor Injuries

femaleofsubstance · 14/03/2026 17:39

I've had to come into Minor injuries as a padt cellulitis foot infection has come back.
Its red/purple and swollen and hot. I definately need antibiotics tonight.
Its a current approx 5hr wait as i knew it would be. I"ve brought a sandwich and drink.
Will i look stupid if i eat something in a bit?

Absolutely not, you’d look sensible.

Ninerainbows · 14/03/2026 17:41

No. In fact hang onto it or someone might mug you for it!

hazelnutvanillalatte · 14/03/2026 17:42

Wdym would you look stupid? Pack food, drinks, toiletries, charger etc if there's a chance you will be there a while. Feel better x

ilovesooty · 14/03/2026 17:42

No it's fine. I hope you don't have to wait too long.

AsparagusSeason · 14/03/2026 17:42

As long as it’s not eggy or fishy, it’s fine.

CallingOnTheMegaphone · 14/03/2026 17:44

Yep, eating when you're hungry is really stupid, hope that helps. 🙄

ExitPursuedByABare · 14/03/2026 17:45

Last time I was in A&E a trolley came round giving out sandwiches to folk who had been in there for over a certain number of hours. Including egg butties.

A friend brought me a meal deal when I’d been waiting for a bed for 10 hours. Eating is fine.

youalright · 14/03/2026 17:46

What is it you're specifically worried about?

newornotnew · 14/03/2026 17:46

You're fine to eat.

Hope you get seen soon.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 14/03/2026 17:46

Definitely not i have learned to always pack snacks and drinks for me and dd

Get well soon x

Exactly what I was going to post!

youalright · 14/03/2026 17:50

The only time I would ever judge someone is if a family of 5 sat in a&e and ordered a curry but id be judging them just as much for bringing the whole family

ChinaPlates · 14/03/2026 17:51

I can’t imagine anyone thinking a person eating a sandwich would look stupid.

Riverous · 14/03/2026 17:51

I always take sandwiches and snacks when I have to take the kids to a n E or minors as there is nothing open in the hospital at night. Id avoid common allergens like peanuts, nuts, etc but I don't think anyone would mind if you eat something.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/03/2026 17:51

Last time I was in A&E, some guy a pizza brought in by a friend!
seems imminently sensible to take good for a long wait!

femaleofsubstance · 14/03/2026 17:52

Thanks guys. Ive just not been in a hospital waiting room before in the evening.
(Lucky i know)

Ours even has sandwich vending machine so not a problem at all.

Pancakeflipper · 14/03/2026 17:55

Sensible to take water and something to eat.

I did judge the family who kept going to a vending machine and buying chilli Doritos for their young child (about 5 or 6) who would eat them then vomit 🤢. Then they'd buy more and the process would be repeated.
FFS - we all know ready salted are easier to vom back up.

femaleofsubstance · 14/03/2026 17:56

I've just heard the hospital pharmacy is closed so if i need antibiotics (which i will).i wont be able to get them until tomorrow!
Not sure whether to go home snd rock back up at 6am.
Been here 30mins and still eaiting for triage.

Tableforjoan · 14/03/2026 17:56

You should have a 24hr pharmacy near by. Ours is a boots.

Yes but the lady said they only give hospital pharmacy scripts! Il ask the triage nurse, no point in waiting if cant get antibiotics til tomorrow!

I used to work in A&E.

IF you had say a broken bone, stomach issues or anything that could potentially require surgery, I'd say stay nil by mouth. In your case though, I'd pack a full picnic! Anything you bring will be cheaper and nicer than the crap things in the vending machines!

Have you drawn a pen mark at the margins of the redness? They will likely do this to show any tracking and progression of the infection. You might need IV antibiotics. Wishing you all the best.

binnibonnieboo · 14/03/2026 17:58

My dh regularly gets cellulitis and goes straight to a and e. He usually gets triage as urgent. We always pack him some food, always

SmudgeButt · 14/03/2026 18:08

stay and get the script and then come back with the pharmacy is open. otherwise you may be in for another 5 hour wait tomorrow with all the people they've scrapped up from outside every club in town.

TeenToTwenties · 14/03/2026 18:13

Definitely not stupid!
A sandwich is on my parents' A&E packing list (if time).
