Bringing a sandwich while waiting in Minor Injuries

femaleofsubstance · 14/03/2026 17:39

I've had to come into Minor injuries as a padt cellulitis foot infection has come back.
Its red/purple and swollen and hot. I definately need antibiotics tonight.
Its a current approx 5hr wait as i knew it would be. I"ve brought a sandwich and drink.
Will i look stupid if i eat something in a bit?

I learned on here (MN) that a hospital prescription is often transferable to another hospital’s pharmacy that has longer hours, within the same NHS Trust area.

It has benefited me a couple of times.

Talkingfrog · 14/03/2026 18:22

Absolutely not. I think most people would think you were lilucky or well organised. Hope the wait isn't too long.

Our minor injuries has a vending machines with drinks, and one with crisps/chocolate.

Fortunately when i have been the wait hasn't been too long. Had enough change for a drink when with my daughter, but couldn't work out how to get the snack machine to take card payment.

Costa mrmeans going outside and back into the building through other doors then not too far, but the main restaurant is up a floor and along a long corridor. Neither would have bedn open on some of my visits which were late at night or evening time.

Badlands1 · 14/03/2026 18:24

The only issue is if you need an aneasthetic there is a delay if you have eaten but hopefully not

sunsetsites · 14/03/2026 18:25

Someone will definitely post a MN thread about how you don’t need to be there because you’re eating a sandwich.

She’s at Minor Injuries. Not A&E… what are they going to say? She was eating a sandwich so her injury must be minor… oh wait that’s where we are.

DameOfThrones · 14/03/2026 18:34

During a recent 11 hour wait at A&E, people were actually using Uber Eats so I wouldn't worry about it.

People have to eat.

allthingsinmoderation · 14/03/2026 18:39

i think eating food is reasonable when you have a long wait, unless you suspect your condition may warrant surgical treatment .

PropitiousJump · 14/03/2026 18:43

My local A&E has a vending machine selling the usual crisps and chocolate. It was getting a lot of trade the last time I was stuck there for five hours.

Needlenardlenoo · 14/03/2026 18:52

First thing I do if visiting MIU is pack snacks, drinks and something to do! I spent an entire day in an eye unit once. Thank god I had a crime novel on a Kindle.

Northumberlandisbest · 14/03/2026 18:55

If I’m going somewhere where I know I’m likely to have to wait I’ll take a book, a drink and a snack ( content depending on time of day). It’s much less stressful if together wait is long.

Ninerainbows · 14/03/2026 17:41

No. In fact hang onto it or someone might mug you for it!

😂😂😂.
I'm not organised enough to plan ahead like this and I'm often hangry, so I'd probably be the person attempting to mug the OP for her sandwich!

SardinesOnButteredToast · 14/03/2026 18:56

Not RTFT but don't eat it near any junior medics or nurses. They don't let those fuckers eat so you might get mugged.

Myfridgeiscool · 14/03/2026 18:57

I had a prescription sent to an hours pharmacy by the hospital once.
Enjoy your sandwich OP. Hope you get seen soon.

Shinyhappyapple · 14/03/2026 19:01

The last couple of times I was waiting in our local A&E they were actually handing out sandwiches and coffee to the people waiting (no charge). It may have been just because it was lunchtime. But yes, I would definitely eat any food I had the forethought to bring.

It’s hard to say about the waiting, if you need to return for any prescription in the morning. I wonder if first thing Sunday morning is going to be a shorter wait anyway. As you say, ask the triage nurse for advice .

Sprogonthetyne · 14/03/2026 19:13

As long as you're not there for anything that might need emergency surgery, then it should be fine. Most waiting rooms have vending machines, so eating is definitely allowed

mindutopia · 14/03/2026 19:20

Of course, it’s fine. When I go for my cancer treatment (it takes like 4-5 hours), I just about move in. I bring a nice blanket and biscuits and my favourite tea mug, plus a full multi course lunch. 😂

Inthebleakmidwinter1 · 14/03/2026 19:55

Fuck no, pack a thermos and a tent and make sure your episodes are downloaded in case they don’t have Wi-Fi

Octavia64 · 14/03/2026 19:56

No.

i have proper bag packed for a and e or other visits.

Whatflavourjellybabyisnice · 15/03/2026 01:33

I hope you get the help you need sweetheart xxxx

OchreReader · 15/03/2026 02:35

No, not silly at all. Hope you feel better soon

50NotFat · 15/03/2026 03:57

My local a&e has a vending machine selling sandwiches and crisps etc. It’s fine to eat in there.

TeaSqueezingpos · 15/03/2026 04:19

I went through a stage of going to A&E a lot recently after having some stomach issues. When I first started going I was pretty unprepared, DH would drive us up with just ourselves and his wallet 🤣 by the end I’d have a bag with my kindle, charger for my phone, gum, a jacket/hoody as an extra layer my water bottle and some snacks🤣 I even kept a travel pillow in the car and would go fetch it if it’s was going to be a overnight thing 😂
