AIBU to miss buying CDs and having a physical music collection?

everything is digital now, Alexa, Spotify, Amazon music etc … I miss buying actual albums, having collections, the art work, the different album covers, the thrill of having a physical collection of your favourite artists - the thrill of a new CD being placed amongst your collection …

Anyone else miss this? Do people actually buy CDs anymore?

YABU because they still exist, so go and buy them if you want to.

Tonissister · 14/03/2026 10:30

YABU because you can have CDs if you want them.

DH and I have a CD collection and still add to it often. I like hearing the whole album in sequence through our best speakers. I do use Spotify and other streaming apps but nowhere near as often. And afaik, musicians get more money fron CD sales than streaming, so I think it supports the industry too. (Coud be wrong)

shellyleppard · 14/03/2026 10:31

I get my CDs from eBay

Monsterslam · 14/03/2026 10:31

We have hmv in town that is full of Cds and blurays. I asked the assistant if anyone actually buys it and she said it's hugely popular with gen z as they are sick of not owning anything and having to subscribe constantly.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 14/03/2026 10:31

I still buy CDs (as well as subscribing to Spotify), partly because our car is old and has a CD player and partly because I want to support the artists more than the 0.001p they’ll get when I stream their music. I love listening to a whole album start to finish sometimes, rather than just a few favourite tracks, and some albums I strongly associate with particular holidays or other road trips when we played something to death. Mind you, I still have my old vinyl too but don’t buy many new albums on vinyl (too expensive and I don’t play records as often as CDs).

Gettingbysomehow · 14/03/2026 10:31

I have a very large CD collection which I play at home and I use spotify in the car.

wheredidtheteago · 14/03/2026 10:33

I’ve started buying dvds again, I love it

TheChosenTwo · 14/03/2026 10:34

YANBU To feel that way but it’s the complete opposite of how I feel. I hate ‘stuff’ and still remember the shitty plastic cases that always seemed to break and leave tiny bits of cracked plastic behind, the cds get scratched/worn out and generally just take up space. They’re not (imo) pretty or decorative - I don’t miss them at all.

PeppyAmberHedgehog · 14/03/2026 10:35

I thought gen Zs are getting into CDs now, so likely not to be obsolete.

LookAtYouNow · 14/03/2026 10:36

I prefer it as it is now as music (and books) don’t take up any physical space, but if you like CDs, then just buy some.

Springisspringingnow · 14/03/2026 10:36

I have vinyl LPs and cds. And I enjoy having them.

I lost quite a few of my vinyl LPs when I got divorced from my first H and I still miss them.
I've bought a lot of classical music CDs over the years and a few, but very few, rock, pop and folk ones.

These days I find myself listening to a few of my old favourite rock LPS with a glass of wine on a Sunday afternoon. And possibly watching a few YouTube music videos. And the rest of the week listen to classical music on radio 3 or on CD. So I don't listen to music on Spotify or Amazon or Alexa at all.

Greyblankie · 14/03/2026 10:37

What CD players do you all have? I’ve just had a Quick Look on Argos and there isn’t much to choose from - just old fashioned boombox type things

Op you are not being unreasonable. I miss physical media. CDs always made great gifts, Birthday/Christmas etc.

We don't have a CD player in the living room (my old boom box is regularly threatened with eviction) or neither of the car's have CD players either.

We still have a CD collection but hasn't been added to in a while.

If I was going out to buy I'd go for a proper hifi, try places like Richard Sounds or Peter Tyson

Sausagedog256 · 14/03/2026 10:42

We have recently bought a record player and have started to collect vinyl for this reason. We are in our 30s so records weren’t a massive thing when we were young. Was all cds and mp3s but vinyl and cds are having a resurgence

Needspaceforlego · 14/03/2026 10:43

Btw DVD / blu-ray can also double as CD players. Which was the plan for out living room.

Sartre · 14/03/2026 10:46

I don’t because they just created clutter. I loved album art so do miss flicking through those but that’s it. Hated the ugly CD towers everyone had to have. Plus they’re not exactly practical… I had one of the plastic wallets to store the discs in but taking it everywhere was painful.

I've got one of those boom box type things in one room. A Sony music centre that has a turntable and can also play cds in my living room. And micro music centres in my bedroom and in the study room. I watch very little TV so its important to me to have the ability to play CDs and listen to the radio or talking books in all my rooms. The kitchen only has a digital radio so I can't play CDs in there but it has Bluetooth so I can play Audible books through it if I want

FriedEggs1 · 14/03/2026 10:49

I always buy my music on CD or vinyl (new releases and old) - I never buy digital. My car is still going (fairly) strong and has a CD player. I do use an MP3 player sometimes and obviously, I've transferred those tracks from CDs. I feel the same OP, and without seeing my favourite band's artwork, I'd never have got the first tattoo I've just had at the ripe old age of 53 😆

AgentJohnson · 14/03/2026 10:50

Really, I have long since converted my CD’s to mp4 and DD has inherited my CD collection. Do I miss CD’s, hell no. They were expensive and inconvenient. If I were to buy a CD now the first thing I’d do would be to convert the tracks to a more portable format.

FriedEggs1 · 14/03/2026 10:52

Oh and we've got a portable radio/CD/Bluetooth in the kitchen and a whole separates 90s style music system with CD, radio, turntable etc for the lounge. The sound on it is outstanding.

Swiftie1878 · 14/03/2026 10:55

They still exist, as do vinyls.
YABU - you just need to buy them!

BlueMum16 · 14/03/2026 10:55

My DS (19) treated himself to what I called a hifi back in the day.

Record player, twin cassette, cd. It links to to his phone and headphones so doesn't move from his bed and I can't hear it. Also has a USB so can transfer the music to a stick for in my car.

He's started playing my old vinyl and CDs and building up his own collection too.

notacooldad · 14/03/2026 10:55

I dont miss them at all( same with dvds)

They take up space. There's usually a couple of tracks on a cd that im not keen on so would skip anyway.

I much prefer being able to curate my own playlists.

I'm often given cds at gigs , especially from up and coming bands but I have nothing to play them on!

Nourishinghandcream · 14/03/2026 10:56

I am sat looking at our CD collection right now, it is housed in a huge set of bookshelves in our family room.

Was listening to a CD full cast audiobook (Lord Peter Whimsy) last night while doing a Wasgij.
We have plenty of CD players scattered around the house but last year, bought a Panasonic "micro/midi system" (with large speakers!) from Argos and that sits in the corner of the living room.

Afraid we both still love real CD's, DVD's & books in this house.😁
