AIBU to miss buying CDs and having a physical music collection?

everything is digital now, Alexa, Spotify, Amazon music etc … I miss buying actual albums, having collections, the art work, the different album covers, the thrill of having a physical collection of your favourite artists - the thrill of a new CD being placed amongst your collection …

Anyone else miss this? Do people actually buy CDs anymore?

What CD players do you all have? I’ve just had a Quick Look on Argos and there isn’t much to choose from - just old fashioned boombox type things

Edited

We got a cheapish one from Curry's. It does dvds too.
We're old enough to have done vinyl then cds now we have both. Although as previously said not as many vinyls as they are expensive. Our dd has just got into records and she likes some of the stuff we like so if there are offers on we both get one. We don't stream though, wouldn't have a clue.

whoputallofthatthere · 14/03/2026 11:06

I still buy CDs and DVDs. I like to own a tangible thing. I worry that digital media could all be lost if the website went down etc. Probably paranoid on my part!

OP, if you still like CDs, then buy them. Manufacturers will stop if there's no demand.

I bought this last year to play soothing classical music to a very scared stray. It is surprisingly clear and not tinny at all. I can also use headphones or connect a mp3 player, phone or tablet to it if i wish. Also has a radio. Mine is a beautiful cherry red colour but I see Argos also does a bright turquoise 😍

I have this one so I can play CDs, Vinyl and Cassettes. I love looking on Vinted for bits and pieces to add to my collection 😊

Everyone likes different things. There's no reasonable or unreasonable about it.
Im glad the little dust catcher fuckers are no longer needed.

My dad loved vinyls, no matter what other type came out, he loved his records and record player. It was a whole experience for him.

You want to get yourself to Richer Sounds!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 14/03/2026 15:31

I have a CD player in my kitchen and still buy CDs, mostly second hand but I do buy the odd new release. I don’t stream any music or have any apps like Spotify.

Coconutter24 · 14/03/2026 15:37

I put YABU because there is nothing to stop you going and buying a CD

NewZebra · 14/03/2026 16:15

My 14 year old has a large cd and vinyl collection. More cds than vinyl, due to the expense though! She’s well into her emo phase now and begging for my old cd’s from the loft.

NewGirlInTown · 14/03/2026 16:23

I frequently buy CDs, it’s still my preferred method of acquiring music. We have cd players in our cars as well as at home.
Streaming etc is a rip off and means less money to artists.

newornotnew · 14/03/2026 16:25

You can buy new or secondhand CDs.
Loads of people keep their physical music collections.

lilacsanddaffs · 14/03/2026 16:30

I voted YABU because you have free will and you can literally go and buy CDs and a CD player. In fact I recommend you do because secondary school children love CDs and they're becoming popular again which will mean price increases.

We have loads as we started rebuilding our collection when we noticed songs on streaming apps were edited.

You want to get yourself to Richer Sounds!

Yes! As a teen in 80s/90s, I started off with a midi hi FI system (tape deck, radio, CD AND turntable!) but switched to separates as soon as I was self financing. Richer Sounds has been my go to for 35 years ish, always knowledgable staff, great deals and amazing quality. The experience of listening to music is hugely different for me at home vs on the go (buds) or in car. But I love music and hearing it in a quality sound really matters to me.

Oh, and six years ago, we moved CDs into soft pockets and our joint collection space for over a thousand (!!!) shrank considerably. I also have my own playlists on Spotify, but an artist will often tell a story through an album and listening to one or two tracks doesn’t give you the experience of that art as the artist intended. You could never get the story of The Ninth Wave or Lily Allen’s latest by picking out only the tune which immediately appeals. I like that I have to work sometimes at albums and over time experience them very differently. My home sound system allows music to nourish me, on the go or streaming is junk food, or a cigarette -or a quick scratch of an itch- for an immediate hit.

randomchap · 14/03/2026 16:32

I still buy cds

Much eye rolling from dd who thinks it's too old fashioned

I enjoy putting an album on and listening to it ask the way through.

itsthetea · 14/03/2026 16:33

YABU
i buy CDs often direct form the artists as it gives them more of the profit

Zov · 14/03/2026 16:38

First reply nails it as usual. Nothing stopping you from buying CDs @Greyblankie Personally, we have a small cottage, and very little room, and over 1000 vinyl albums, 700 vinyl single (45s,) 1500-ish DVDs, around 150 CD singles, and 400 CD albums. Don't want to get rid of any, but am glad that I don't have to buy them anymore, and can just stream - or download MP3s and play them on my MP3 player. (Yes, I DO play songs on an MP3 player. Had it since 2012, and love it! It holds 1000 songs and I have no reason to replace it.)

Tink3rbell30 · 14/03/2026 17:08

I still have mine and play them in the car. I still have DVDs and a player too. Don't understand the obsession with streaming. Things get removed off there all the time.

I have this https://www.currys.co.uk/products/majority-homerton-2-dabfm-smart-bluetooth-radio-oak-10241740.html - it plays my CDs, but also Spotify and a DAB radio. Our ‘proper’ hifi system is in a different room with the records but this sits unobtrusively on a shelf in the living room and has a decent sound for the size of it.

PlugPug · 14/03/2026 17:15

I like vinyl. It’s more expensive though.

FourChimneys · 14/03/2026 17:21

A charity shop in in my town has recently increased the display area for CDs and vinyl because it is such a growing market.

I no longer have a turntable but regularly play CDs.

Anewerforest · 14/03/2026 17:24

I still buy cds and some of my old ones go back to the 1980s. Much better sound quality than streaming.

I agree. The difference a proper sound system makes is incredible, especially for classical music. Today it is possible to get much cheaper and quite compact systems that still produce great sound.

SuperBlondie28 · 14/03/2026 18:16

Yes. I still buy CD's and have a Denon 80s style mini hifi system in the bedroom. We have a HMV where I live too. I'd rather buy at HMV than Amazon. Or from Ebay/Vinted.

I also have a blu ray/dvd collection. Luckily I have space.

One thing I do not buy anymore is paperbacks. I love my Kindle and wait for the offers. The library is generally open when I'm at work before it gets mentioned lol

ThisSunnyBee · 14/03/2026 18:21

Can't bear the thought of all the plastic waste of the physical thing and all the clutter. Charity shops bin 10000s of them all the time, don't need to physically have it to enjoy the music etc
