Ordering the same takeout each time

We very rarely have a takeaway and when we do it’s normally Chinese or occasionally pizza. Adult DD is a vegetarian and I have ibs so restricted what I can eat. But even so, I think when treating ourselves to a takeout each person should be able to have what they want.

we ordered Chinese tonight as DD has reached a goal in her mental health targets and felt she needed it acknowledging just a low key thing.

So she instantly said she wanted her normal - chow mien no bean sprouts, stir fried vegetables no sauce egg fried rice and spring rolls. I add my chicken balls in sweet and sour sauce, and we’re both happy we share this and she always has some left over noodles for supper !

now here’s the problem DH says that’s boring we always get the same, tonight he got special fried rice house special curry and lamb with spring onions and ginger. Fine that’s what he wants I really don’t see the problem.

but then when we’re eating I suggest he has some chicken (I would never eat them all) and he has some spring rolls, fine there’s plenty we’re all still happy. But the he starts, I should try what he ordered, I being boring, I point out I can’t eat his rice that’s why we get the egg fried, I can’t eat pork or prawns both of which are in his curry and I can’t eat onions so the lambs out. Would I like his meal - yes, can I eat it no/

he went on and on saying a ltltle wouldn’t hurt, but trust me - it will. And anyway, we’re happy with what we have, it’s what we like.

am I being unreasonable saying that whereas it’s nice to share a takeout, ultimately each person has their own wants and it’s really not an issure.

honestly it’s the same with pizza, a large mixed vegetables no onion extra pineapple DD and I are happy, he always ridicules it as boring whilst he tucks unto his large mixed meat spicy whatever it is he has then complains all night with indigestion.

it takes the joy out of the treat.

DD and I have learned to just let him get on with it, and we enjoy ourselves, but sometimes like tonight, I could just poke the chop stick somewhere!

sorry rant over

and just to say the chicken balls covered in sauce were amazing tonight.

To be honest takeaways are expensive, and i am fussy, so I stick to what I know i will enjoy. Don't want to chuck £15 away on an experiment Wink

My thoughts exactly. If I'm spending I don't want to hate eat it if I dont like it as they're not cheap (but I'm too cheap to waste it)

I don't think you can get mad he offered you his food if you offered yours first

I always get the same take away even if I fancy trying something new I'd get that on the side & suck up the cost, take outs are farrr to expensive to risk a complete meal change on.

I am very sensitive to MSG, too much spice, too many onions so I tend to get takeaway from a select few shops. I sympathise with OP and her DD - what’s wrong with a few tried and tested faves?

I have had grilled prawns from Colombo Kitchen for 3 weeks in a row. No issues x

IYKYK

chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, a bag of chips, a keema naan, and nine poppadoms

I want no part of it!

You should be able to order whatever you want!

Your order is your choice and his order is his business!

Odd of him to be bothered by what your eat/order

hattie43 · 15/03/2026 08:18

YABU because it’s a silly thing to get worked up over .

He's being an arse. I am not a fussy eater and happily shared takeaways until I became gluten intolerant (maybe coeliac) and dairy intolerant a few years ago (possibly triggered by covid). I'd love to be able to eat and try whatever I like, but I can't. It's a bit of a source of inconvenience to the family, but dh would never be such an idiot as to suggest I try something I can't eat.

Watch the takeaway episode of Gavin and Stacey!

You lost me at sharing a takeaway. I order what I want, and then I eat it. If I wanted what someone else had I would have ordered it.

My husband and I always share because that way we get to eat more things. A Chinese is always enough for 2-3 people anyway so there’s no point us both ordering everything each. Our usual order is:

Duck pancakes
Chicken Foo Yung with chow mein
Salt and pepper chicken with chips
Prawn Crackers

It always does us both two meals each (except pancakes) and then there’s always enough Foo Yung and chow mein left for a single third meal that I let him have as I’m sick of the sight of it by then.

itsthetea · 15/03/2026 18:46

It’s meant to be a treat ffs - if his idea of a treat is making you eat something you don’t want that’s a pretty unhealthy way for him to get his kicks

skyeisthelimit · 18/03/2026 11:26

Just say "DH, you know I can't eat certain foods due to IBS, please stop doing this every time we get a takeaway as you are taking the enjoyment out of it".
