Chefs that dont scrape the bowl out on the telly?

They're wrong 'uns aren't they?

I spend a lot of time scraping every ounce of stuff out of my bowl or pan, I dont waste a scrap

I cant stand it when they're pouring something into the baking tray or cake tin or whatever and half it is still left in the bowl

Rick Stein did it last night on a programme I was watching. Infuriating.

I agree! Drives me mad.

Yup. Can't stop thinking about it when they do the tasting bit. 'But...but...what about the WHOLE OTHER cake you could have made with the leftovers.

I have four spatulas though...maybe the poor souls don't have one.

Offit · 13/03/2026 20:46

Absolutely with you. They fill the demonstration dish and leave SO MUCH in the bowl I always end up wondering what happens to all the food!

k1233 · 13/03/2026 20:51

Well, it would have been a major win as a kid when you got to lick the bowl (talking cakes, not other cooking). But yes, it makes me irrationally frustrated that they can't properly empty the bowl.

Don't get me started on ice cream scoops to do patty cakes / muffins, let alone putting bloody cake batter into a cake tin with a stupid scoop. Or cakes so dry they're drowned in sugar syrup so all you taste is syrup, not the flavour if the cake. To be fair, it's probably flavourless as well as dry...

likelysuspect · 13/03/2026 20:54

Well I admit my bowls are virtually clean by the time they get to the sink and some of that is obviously chefs privilege.

Four? Amateur!

NeedToKnow101 · 13/03/2026 21:00

Totally agree. My Maurice (French for bendy spatula apparently) is my most loved, and used, kitchen utensil. I’m obsessed with it. How dare those TV chefs not use one. So wasteful.

Laserwho · 13/03/2026 21:09

There are on a TV show. They have a time limit. They do loads of editing. They arnt going to show 4 minutes of scraping a bowl clean.

Shoddy production.

I actually prefer the bowl scrapings to the actual cakes.

Indeed. I'm not a professional chef clearly as they don't own any spatulas at all...

ShootinFromTheHip · 13/03/2026 21:27

I’m glad it’s not only me who thinks this. Why measure out ingredients into a bowl and not use a spatula to completely empty the contents? It defeats measuring out which is the whole purpose of accuracy and it’s wasteful.

ShootinFromTheHip · 13/03/2026 21:41

With no more than a couple of deft movements with a pliable spatula cookery experts could add to the skills and knowledge they demonstrate.
Like you, OP, I see it as wrong.

likelysuspect · 13/03/2026 21:43

Also cleaning off the mixer blade/paddle

I am fastidious about that

So an hour cooking show would havecto be longer because if they did this with every item it would take forever i prssume it is a time thing

I am sure watching that would make great tv

Not as bad as movies and TV shows where the characters don’t say bye on the phone.

Wouldn't it be just a quick edit to show first dollop going in and then the last scrape. The in-between bit doesn't have to be shown.

Lannygranny · 13/03/2026 21:53

We call spatulas “meanies” in our family. Because they take all the yummy cake batter out of the bowl and there is none left for anyone to eat

I think it would. Particularly by the stage I get my cotton bud set out.

This has annoyed me for years! The amount some of them leave behind is criminal!

They already edit them. They don't need to show every detail of how to use a spatula to empty a bowl properly.

But why the need? It is a cooking show
