AIBU to expect neighbours to stop building work by 6pm?

We are in a terraced house. Neighbours are doing a some building work. They have shown us the plans and have building control approval, there will be some contractors but they are also doing a lot of parts of it themselves (they are in the trade) due to this there will be work on evenings and weekends. We have said can they let us know when they will be doing work and being considerate as our children go to bed between 6-6.30pm. They have said they will let us know when any major parts of the works start, but they won't be messaging us every time they do any work in an evening or weekend as they will be doing work at any available opportunity after work etc.
I think they should be considerate and stop working by 6pm as we have young children. They said that is too early and if they don't get back from work until then how will they ever finish the project, they did say they would be considerate and not work late maybe until 7/7.30.
Who is being unreasonable here?

You're taking the absolute piss expecting the world to go quiet at tea time because you put your kids to bed weirdly early.

NoKnit · 13/03/2026 19:42

Who puts their kids to bed at 6pm? Or even 6.30pm?

Easterbunnygettingawrapping · 13/03/2026 19:43

Our ndn renovated a whole house whenever they chose.. Most weekends from 8am until after dark.
Utter twats.
Hive fitting took 11 hours and 45 mins one Saturday..
Council didn't give a shit.
Our ddog had a stroke and died. Can't prove it was stress related but our house shook regularly....

Barrenfieldoffucks · 13/03/2026 19:44

I'd say 730 or 8 would be more fair tbh.

ColdAsAWitches · 13/03/2026 19:46

They are completely right here.

Stopping work at 8pm is reasonable.

Why do your children go to bed at 6pm?! I’ve never heard of such an early bedtime.

AsparagusSeason · 13/03/2026 19:49

Generally, builders are expected to stop noisy works by 6pm on weekdays. (But then, I work in construction management and I’ve never known builders to work beyond 4pm!)

If it’s diy noise, there’s not much you can do other than remind yourself it’s finite. The sooner they get it done, the sooner you’ll have peace.

As an aside, why do your kids go to bed so incredibly early?

ThePoshUns · 13/03/2026 19:51

6pm is still part of the working day. They are not being unreasonable.

Pinkroom · 13/03/2026 19:51

It's usually 6.30pm rather than 6. But I still think that's late to make noise. I also think they should message us if it's going to be noisy as we could plan to go out or stay elsewhere if needed.
They were doing work one day when one of my children was at home trying to nap and couldn't because of the noise.

Sorry but the world doesn’t revolve around you and your kids sleep schedule. The building work won’t last forever, you’ll just have to suck it up.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 13/03/2026 19:54

You can't expect silence during the day so your child can nap!!

Cheesyhashbrowns · 13/03/2026 19:55

I think that is just life with young children to be honest. Try to get them used to falling asleep whilst noise goes on around them and your life will be much easier.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 13/03/2026 20:00

YABU. They haven’t even said they’ll be working particularly late - saying they’ll stop at 7/7:30 is extremely reasonable.

So now they can’t do work during the day either? In case a nearby child is trying to nap?

GreyfriarsJobbies · 13/03/2026 20:04

We've done a ton of work on our house ourselves and would be very reluctant to make a racket after 6pm, so I don't think you are being too unreasonable. Still they do have a point re having to get it done, so 6.30 is a reasonable compromise.

Fidgety31 · 13/03/2026 20:07

You are being ridiculous! How are they supposed to do anythign !
Do you expect them to take Annual leave so they can DIY during the daytime instead !

maybe you should’ve moved to a house with no neighbours !

She doesn't expect them to take annual leave and do it during the day, because she’s also complained about daytime work. She presumably wants total silence.

Do you have a Party Wall Agreement with your neighbours?

RobinInTheCrabApple · 13/03/2026 20:13

If you're tolerant now, when your kids have their friends round and are running up and down the stairs or screaming their heads off tearing around on bikes hopefully your neighbour will be equally tolerant.

Yes we signed that. They served us with one as they are doing a loft conversion

Noise ordinances vary from local council to local council. I've lived in some places where construction noise is allowed until 7pm during the week and others where it's expected that noisy works are complete by 5pm. Weekends tend to be even more restrictive. I'd check to see what your local council says.

Firsttimetrier · 13/03/2026 20:15

In my area, they can’t do anything after 6pm or it can be reported as noise nuisance, so YANBU

Zanatdy · 13/03/2026 20:18

8-9pm is reasonable time to stop. You cannot expect them to accommodate your children’s early bedtime. As they say, they will never finish and you’d have this dragging on much longer. YABU

ThejoyofNC · 13/03/2026 20:20

You're clearly not suited to living in a terraced house.

Iocanepowder · 13/03/2026 20:22

I have 2 young kids and i think YABU.

Their agreement to finish by 7.30pm is perfectly fine and should also be an acceptable bedtime for many kids.

Try some white noise for your kids if you haven’t already.
