Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

Wishididntseemsogrumpy · 13/03/2026 16:47

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

It is pointless having a dog if you are just going to leave them at home all the time

In the vanishing mists of time, people had dogs for working purposes. Or elderly folks who live alone, for company. Now the pandemic is over millions of families who got puppies to relieve the boredom of lockdown are left with pets they have no time for, and have to take them everywhere. That's what's happened.

I don't doubt that, but don't look at every dog out there and assume they were a lockdown puppy.

BunnyFrock · 14/03/2026 20:13

I’ve just been to a very popular NT cafe. The dog friendly part was stacked out with zero tables left. The non dog area was empty the whole time bar one table once

You must tell me which one it was. I've had NT membership for more than 30 years and they're ALWAYS heaving at lunchtime. In fact, in one of my previous posts I explained how a dog owner tried to oust me from my table in the dog area because she had a dog and I didn't! I sat there because there was no room anywhere else. She got short shrift from me and the waitress she tried to get on board to move us. I felt a bit sorry for her tbh.
She really didn't get it. She had to sit outside in the rain. Shame.

Surely you just take her places that don’t allow dogs?

The entire point of the thread is there increasingly aren’t any. And the human wins. Always. The dog is unimportant.

BunnyFrock · 14/03/2026 20:17

You can still take it on walks. Why do you need to have it with you when you go to human places? Plenty of people don’t

Responsible dog owners don't.

BunnyFrock · 14/03/2026 20:19

I shouldn’t have one? Or a howling dog shouldn’t exist? My dog doesn’t disturb neighbours because … I take him out with me

But that's not really a solution. And you know that.

What? A solution to my dog being scared of being alone is to not leave him alone. So I plan my day and take him to places that allow dogs. What’s the problem?

My dog only went in places she was allowed. That is responsible.

So if you go in a dog friendly cafe, and see there are several dogs, are you going to insist they all leave?
That sounds pretty entitled to me.

RobinInTheCrabApple · 14/03/2026 20:29

@Harhar I'm so sad to hear your dog had such a terrible start in life. People can be so cruel.

How lucky your pup is to have you now.

BunnyFrock · 14/03/2026 20:29

Whoever was there first

That response is depressing and hurtful. For obvious reasons.
I'm sure, however, that it's a tiny minority of people with skewed perspective who would have responded that way.

If your SEN child is scared of dogs, then why would you take them somewhere that dogs are likely to be?
Would you insist all the dogs and owners leave?

BunnyFrock · 14/03/2026 20:33

Surely you just take her places that don’t allow dogs?

Yes. But that's getting more and more difficult. It's more difficult now than it was 10/15 years ago. 15 years ago there weren't so many dogs about. Fact.

I'm also seeing more cases of people walking multiple dogs. I know that some of them are professional dog walkers, etc but there are more and more choosing to have more than one dog - I see it round here.

Then blame the establishments that allow them. Blaming dog owners, who are doing nothing wrong, is just diverting your anger at the wrong people.

Then surely the answer is to work with professionals to help support your child to thrive rather than demand the world bends to her needs?

One of these will set her up for success. One will not.

15 million dog owners are not going to suddenly change their behaviour for your one child whom they've never met.

If you came into a pub I was in with my dog, and I noticed your child was afraid, the most I would do is move my dog onto my lap/away from her when/if she needed to walk past us. My job is to manage my dog. Yours is to manage your child; if you cannot do that in dog-friendly spaces, that's on you, not me. Don't visit them if you're unable to support your child in dealing with her fears. There is no law that says you have to eat out.

You'd hate us. We have 5 dogs. Four are walked together, one is walked alone because he is a working breed with different needs than the chihuahuas.

We also often have family reunions with the chihauahuas were there can be as many as 12 dogs running around.

Many decent dog owners on here have said they don’t drag their dogs round cafes and shops. I thank them.

Dogs are likely to be everywhere in current times. That's the whole premise of the thread. They are allowed everywhere. Safe places are disappearing fast.

You would also hate where I live. Once a month there is a greyhound walk through one of the big parks. Over 60 dogs attend.

Yeah. My neighbour has three yappy ones. They always leave them alone on xmas day and you can hear them yapping, sound comes down our living room chimney. I've mentioned it to him but he denies that that they ever bark.
They don't. They only bark when he's not there so go figure.
