Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

Wishididntseemsogrumpy · 13/03/2026 16:47

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

I think the tide is turning a bit though. On this thread, more people are against dogs in cafes (people who dislike dogs and decent dog owners alike) than I have noticed in previous threads. If we vote with our feet and post negative reviews, some businesses may take heed!

I think the tide is turning the other way as the op has noticed. Cafes realise dog owners are a good source of income. Most other customers don’t mind. Dog owners can also walk and cafe owners don’t want that. I’ve noticed cafe owners having more issues with entitled gangs of mothers than dog owners.

What if the baby is asleep?/too small for a high chair. If I wake it up then you'll complain it's making noise. And if I leave it outside you'll complain the (often v narrow) pavements are blocked. I hope people were kinder to you when you had your children.

You hold it. If we all brought in prams with us there would be no room for anybody, it’s so entitled.

I was more thoughtful to other customers when my kids were little and a lot more resourceful.

What are these "entitled gangs of mothers" doing? Bringing their babies into a cafe? Having prams? Existing? They'd just be much better off being at home, getting increasingly isolated and depressed. God forbid they look for support as they go through one of the most challenging and exhausting transitions in their lives.

This is just ridiculous. It's not entitled to bring a pram into a cafe because you want a coffee and your 6 week old baby is fast asleep.

So you always woke your baby up when you went for a coffee? That's incredibly practical. And are you happy to put up with the ensuing screaming?

Entitled gangs? Lol.

We have a gorgeous Dalmatian girl. However we dont take her shopping ,or to Cafes or pubs .She would defo not sit down and would be looking for food! Seeing a large GS being trailed around the shops ,and on another occasion another Dalmatian getting into a packed lift ! Not fun for anyone .She has a walk in the woods before going out !

Muppet10 · 14/03/2026 10:15

I don’t have a problem with dogs in cafes as I take my pugs with me, however I do think people should keep them close to them and not let them interact with anyone unless it’s clear they are ok with it. I also only think well behaved dogs should be allowed, we used to have a snarly pug and I wouldn’t take her to a cafe.

You’ve not discovered slings or the stealth lift? As a said there seems to be a generational lack of resourcefulness and a whole lot of entitlement now which does piss off cafe owners.

My dog loves going to cafes because he knows that all the children who ask if they can pet him will be told he doesn't like that, but they can feed him a treat instead if they want to.

He is so cute in his little cat tree ❤️❤️❤️❤️

ForMerryMauveDreamer · 14/03/2026 10:18

How about you control your kid and tell her to stop holding her hand out for the dog to lick!

My DH and I had gone for a long walk specifically with the intention of getting our 1 year old to sleep so we could have a coffee in peace while we read. The moment we sat down a dog came in and the dog that was sitting a couple of tables down went absolutely mental. She woke up -- not just slightly but completely because it was so loud. If your dog can't cope with other dogs to that extent why are they in a cafe???

What you needed was a library not a cafe if you wanted to read in peace.
No dogs allowed in libraries, but most have coffee machines or often a cafe.

Harhar · 14/03/2026 10:22

Do you ever look at yourself and wonder how you got so nasty?

Last week I went for a walk, pushed my buggy into the corner of a cafe under a table and while my (very demanding, exhausting 1 year old) daughter slept, I sat and actually read some of a book without falling asleep because it was the end of the day. If that's entitled so be it.

So you think that dogs should be brought into cafes even if they try to attack, loudly, any other dog that comes in?

I wasnt aware that reading was a banned activity? No wonder the IQ of our nation is declining if people are under the impression that you can only read in libraries.

Some people who don’t have the social skills to behave around humans, stick with dogs for company. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Unfortunately this isn’t what often happens in cafes. Too often kids are noisy and left to roam with large buggies being parked up to manoeuvre round and the whole establishment is used as a form of entertainment and buggy park. I am simply pointing out that dogs are a whole less of an invasion on customer cafe experience and if customers are expected to suck up children they can suck up dogs.

It’s interesting cafes are actively trying to attract dog owning customers and not those with children. I wonder why.🤔

It's not the reading that's unreasonable, it's expecting peace when you do so.
I often read in cafes and see many people doing so. Good for them.

The difference between us is I don't expect peace in a cafe. I expect the bustle of life going on around me. Dogs, people on phones, children, noisy coffee machines, conversation. That's what cafes are for isn't it?

If I'm looking for peace and no dogs then a library is a better option.

You've kind of made up the first part of your post to suit your bent.

ObsessiveGoogler · 14/03/2026 10:33

I don’t personally take my dog shopping or to restaurants or cafes. I agree that dogs are everywhere now and that won’t be to everyone’s taste (particularly with allergies) , but don’t recognize these hoards of slobbering, smelly, feral hounds that stick their noses and worse in innocent diner’s meals. Wherever I go dogs are sitting or lying quietly on a short leash not interfering with anyone.

Livpool · 14/03/2026 10:33

Wr3ck · 14/03/2026 10:04

Yes but they don’t need to be inside. The world has managed to parent for ever and when my kids were tiny we didn’t need to think it necessary to have giant buggies welded to our hips in busy cafes for everybody to trip over. They can be left outside the same as thy always did.

Dogs don’t need to be inside cafes, pubs, shops etc then. They can be tied outside, lie or used to be

I don't expect silence. I expect dog owners to realize that it is unreasonable to keep a dog in a cafe which cannot cope with other dogs also being in the cafe. There is a difference between chatter and doors banging occasionally and a dog barking at a high pitch incessantly.

They don’t cause the same amount of disruption so have no need to be outside. The vast majority sit under the table the customer is paying for, not so roaming toddlers and prams.

I think it’s easier to notice the bad owners. I was in a cafe the other day and somebody was letting their labrador wander around all the tables. I asked her to keep her dog away from me. She looked affronted but obviously had no defence. The ones with the well-behaved dogs sitting under the table of course do not attract the same attention.

I do agree with you re barking dogs though. Baking dogs and noisy children/babies need to be taken outside. Used to do it with my children all the time, they soon stop.

I don't disagree with that. You can completely eradicate that risk by choosing a cafe that doesn't allow dogs. Or having a coffee in the library. Which is what I suggested.
