Three or four baths a week?

christonapushbike · 13/03/2026 14:51

When we redid our bathroom we got a lovely big deep tub with the intention of using it as a nice treat approx once every 2-3 months. DSD enjoys using it 3-4 times a week and complains that her ensuite shower isn't usable as the pressure in her shower is 'too low' (its fine- not a power shower but totally usable!). Am I unreasonable to feel this is completely ungrateful attitude and an ensuite is a massive privilege (only she has one in our house) she spends up to 2 hours bathing in our bath and I've worked out each bath costs £3.50 in gas and water (it's 300 litre capacity). When challenged on why she refuses to use her own bathroom she just shrugs/ scowls. Her ensuite is a shower room with a toilet (no bath) for reference.

no, they sit (full, lid on) in the bath and displace the bath water in the bath (if op is really that concerned). Same principle as saving water in toilet cisterns, which lots of people utilise. Seems a bit tight unless money is a real issue.

Oh I see you werent joking

That rather ruins it

Are there pictures of said items?

InveterateWineDrinker · 13/03/2026 16:29

Raising 300 litres of water from 8 celsius to 40 celsius will use 11.2 kWh of energy, or about £3.10 at the current electricity price cap. 300 litres of metered water (United Utilities rate) would be another £1.10 on top.

Quite apart from the cost, it's an absolutely obscene waste of scarce natural resources and an environmental disaster.

It's real?!

RhododendronFlowers · 13/03/2026 16:30

I think we need a picture of this bath tub. I'm picturing a Cleopatra one, filled with asses' milk.

likelysuspect · 13/03/2026 16:30

A nice little birthday present there OP for her

She'll love them

And all her friends will want one too.

RhododendronFlowers · 13/03/2026 16:31

likelysuspect · 13/03/2026 16:30

Right. Is that cheaper than just installing a regular sized bath?

rfgtc43c4 · 13/03/2026 16:31

Baths are good for you, not sure what the issue is. Less cleaning also if everyone uses the same room

Boomer55 · 13/03/2026 16:31

A bath is to use. Usually daily. Why are you restricting it?

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/03/2026 16:31

As others said why spend a huge amount on a bath you plan to use few times a year. Madness

install a pump so she had a decent pressure shower

Maybe you need to change bath as it sounds huge

it’s half the size in water that my lazy spa takes to fill so yes if I had to fill that every week I do get the cost of 3 x baths every week is quite a lot

Equally 2hrs in possibly the only bathroom minus her en suite is a bit ott

OP did not think this through when choosing the bathroom!!

Clearly not! I'm wondering what the 3/4 red letter days are.

PippaToryFripp · 13/03/2026 16:33

Did you grow up poor? Or are you a miser?
Who buys a 300 litre bath and only uses it every 3-4 months as a luxury? Cost per use must be ridiculous!

Or @5.7p/kWh for gas, just 63.84p per bath, assuming she's doing that Archimedes thing and filling the bath to the top and jumping in to see how much water she can displace, then the op would have something to complain about.

Jellycatspyjamas · 13/03/2026 16:34

tara66 · 13/03/2026 16:28

Is everyone not aware that the cost of gas, electric and water is rising a lot for most people ? Not helped by current war?

If the cost of water was an issue you’d not buy a fuck off huge bath you could only afford to fill 4 times a year, you’d invest in a decent shower instead. Given the OP did the former rather than the latter I assume she’s not on the bread line.

My DD has at least one bath daily, in the family bathroom rather than her en-suite. I have no fucks to give about this, it’s her home, I want her to be comfortable in it.

BillieWiper · 13/03/2026 16:35

Just lock the door from the outside.
It's true if she's her own en suite and bath is basically part of your en suite, rather than the communal bathroom, then she shouldn't be hogging it. Or even using it without permission.

If it's in family bathroom then it's reasonable to use it but not for more than about 45 mins max. Unless she's disabled.

cupfinalchaos · 13/03/2026 16:35

I don’t count washing as a privilege.

Who uses elecgtric to heat water up these days?

Octavia64 · 13/03/2026 16:37

My dd is now trying to work out the cost of filling a bath with printer ink. At the correct temperature obviously.

3.50 for a bath is a big overestimate unless it’s as big as my hot tub which takes 1,800 litres and I doubt.

if you do have a bath the size of a hot tub but cannot afford the heating to fill it with hot water why on earth did you buy it?

LetsForgetItExistsShallWe · 13/03/2026 16:37

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 13/03/2026 15:15

No it isn't. What if someone had OCD and wanted four baths a day and the family were struggling financially? The bathroom belongs to the whole family, not just one person. And she doesn't pay the bills.

OP I think you are getting it in the neck here because you are the stepmother. If you were her birth mother I imagine people would be more sympathetic.

Someone with an existing health condition that has symptoms and pain managed by hot water and baths would take that into consideration those needs when on a tight budget and choosing to purchase a bath. Im not sure why OCD has been mentioned in relation to this scenario, I have disabilities that require more hot water and baths than other member of my household, it costs me £1.50 max to fill my bath and get a couple of hours pain relief. My family would never expect to use our limited income in choosing one that would cost twice as much.

It would be like me being on a tight budget while shopping for a household car, and choosing a fancy Land Rover and agreeing that we will leave it sat on the drive as the fuel to use it in a normal daily car type of way, costs too much.

Bloozie · 13/03/2026 16:38

Who puts in a 300-litre bath to use every 3 months? What a waste of money.

I have a lovely massive bath and I soak in it 3 times a week. YABU.

Yes I think we need some proper maths applied to this, I simply dont believe OP's estimate.

gingercat02 · 13/03/2026 16:39

We got a massive bath in our new bathroom. I'm 5'9 and can only.just reach the end. I got a bath board and bath pillow for Christmas, it's bliss.
DS now loves a bath too, he's over 6 foot so now he fits in!
A shower is great for hair washing and to get clean. A bath is a luxurious wallow, with a good book and a glass of wine preferably.

No, it seems unlikely.

OhBettyCalmDown · 13/03/2026 16:40

I think monitoring someone’s use of the bath is a bit ridiculous to be honest. I love a bath and only shower if I really have to. Unless your family is desperately struggling financially I think it’s a madness to save a bath as a treat or special occasion.
