Lush - how do they get away with charging so much?

I've never shopped at Lush before. Not my kind of thing and they're a bit of an odd brand. However I just asked a friend what her child wanted for his birthday, and apparently he's after lush Mario products. I've just had a look online:

  • £21 for a relatively small shower gel (290g).
  • £12 for an egg bath bomb.
  • £35 for a bottle of body spray.

This just seems absolutely insane to me! I buy mostly Korean bath products as they're a safe zone for my eczema, they have decent ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and have hardly any chemicals (they use ceramides instead) or weird colouring. The ingredients are far superior yet they're half the price.

The lush products have SLES listed as the third product so obviously have a lot of it, three different fragrances and tin oxide (glitter) which aren't great.

Do people actually spend this much money on gimmicky products? Are they actually good? Do they smell incredibly to justify that price.

£21 for shower gel just blew my mind.

I think they appeal to young people the way that Lynx used to. My nieces and nephew all went through a phase of asking for lush stuff for presents.I cannot abide the stuff. Migraine inducing smells when you walk past the shop.

Yep. I can't believe they got away with it. Totally completely naked except for an apron which tied at the back, so bums completely out. I think they claimed that people could opt out but yeah. I don't buy it. I don't buy that many staff were that thrilled to be completely naked and vulnerable at work with the general public.

Urgh thats so awful - I bet people felt pressured to do it

Could you link to the Korean products? they sound good!

OP, I haven't read the full thread yet, but you do realise Lush (and how awful it is) is a MN all-time favourite topic, don't you?
I will now read back the thread to see how many people claim they get thrush, eczema, itchy skin from the (once, always an unappreciated gift) time they used it and/or get breathing difficulties/migrane if they come within a mile of a store.

I swear TG, I have never seen such a thrush infected group as on Mumsnet.

Justgorgeous · 13/03/2026 14:51

The smell in there is vile. Have never tried their products.

Oh no. Not the dreaded bare bum.

This wasnt directed at me but I use Korean products too- they are amazing. They focus on skin friendly ingredients such as niacimide, centella, rice water, ginseng, Hyaluronic Acid, PDRN, propolis etc

Wait until you get to Sephora!!!! I wish my Tweenie granddaughters would shop at Lush!!! Lots of overpriced shops sadly.

Ireolu · 13/03/2026 14:58

DD likes the mouldable rainbow soap. It's fun for the bath but it's £12. The soap bars and very strong smelling and dry out skin (so not great for skin). I refused her their shower stuff it was like 7.50 for a 10ml tub. No way. Bath bombs are £1.50 in primark. That's where we get ours from.

I got given 8 Lush bath bombs for Christmas (after some confusion about gift organising, I didn't actually ask for that many). I think I used them all within the space of 3 weeks and I was absolutely fine!

And I'm sure you'd say the same if it was the 60 yo bloke at the corner shop who'd decided that he'd serve customers in the buff, wouldn't you?

Nobody should have to (a) see someone's naked arse while out shopping or (b) be coerced into doing their minimum wage job naked.

wishingonastar101 · 13/03/2026 15:10

screaming thrush just thinking about lush products.

Chainlinkferry · 13/03/2026 15:12

YABU to suggest hyaluronic acid and ceramides are not chemicals.

superchick · 13/03/2026 15:14

I love the smell and the sort of haphazard, gimmicky. home-made, fresh ingredients vibes. Their shampoo bars are the only ones I've found that actually work. I don't routinely shop in there though. Maybe twice a year just for something different.

I think theres an interest in teens/tweens who like all the bright colours and glitter

ThatCyanCat · 13/03/2026 15:37

intrepidpanda · 13/03/2026 14:51

Oh no. Not the dreaded bare bum.

I caused some offence recently by not being outraged about thong swimsuits but I gotta say I draw the line at being asked to show my backside to everyone at work and beyond, even with a "no pressure" caveat.

Hmm. I could probably bring Thrush down by working there at the next nudey day and getting my monstrous posterior out at everyone who wandered in to browse violently coloured soaps. Sales would fall off a cliff and I'd probably cause the London Stock Exchange to crash entirely by 11am.

ScupperedbytheSea · 13/03/2026 15:43

The solid shampoo is the best I've found, and I like one of the conditioners too.

I don't buy anything else.

SmallChildCryingTearsofButter · 13/03/2026 15:46

No idea, disgusting stuff - I can’t go hear their stores because of the overpowering chemical stink.

SmudgeButt · 13/03/2026 15:56

I used to work with someone whose partner worked in their factory and there was always stuff that he could get that she would sell on at half price. Even then it was expensive (but I'm really cheap)

But best memory is when my parents were visiting and we happened to come across one of their very first shops. Mom took one sniff and left. Dad was fascinated by it all and started taking photos. A staff member saw him and asked him to stop. He continued saying he found the colours fascinating (he was a painter). The staff member got a bit shouty and said if he didn't stop immediately she would call the police. We were both a bit shocked by that and simply left but I guess she thought he was some sort of industrial spy.

Bath bombs from Lush do actually give me thrush, one of the main reasons I stopped using them. I presumed from all the colour and perfume they really stepped up with. And, it's well known that anything like this does muck around with our bits and why should just be used on occasion and rinsed after.

I know someone who said their stuff gave her thrush. They're violently coloured, violently over-scented and their staff don't always wear clothes. It didn't surprise me at all.

Lvpxl · 13/03/2026 16:22

I find the smells overwhelming even just walking passed the shop. Went in once and was pounced on by an assistant soon as I walked in. That put me off straight away. Overpriced, artificial smelling products. Don’t get the hype.

FlexiSadie · 13/03/2026 16:25

I love their products and their politics. I stick with bubble bars rather than bath bombs because you get multiple baths out of them. Their products suit my skin where most don't, and they're a lifesaver after a long shift.

I do ask staff to leave me alone when I enter though.

Do you get your arse out at work for strangers? Unless you're on only fans, I highly doubt it.

Its a scummy, unethical company.

Theunamedcat · 13/03/2026 17:04

I like the smell because that part of Birmingham can get a bit stinky they also let me wash my hands there without the hard sell because I wandered in and said I touched something sticky lovely staff just too much money for me quite frankly the staff act like they dont care if you buy or not they get paid anyway
