Lush - how do they get away with charging so much?

I've never shopped at Lush before. Not my kind of thing and they're a bit of an odd brand. However I just asked a friend what her child wanted for his birthday, and apparently he's after lush Mario products. I've just had a look online:

  • £21 for a relatively small shower gel (290g).
  • £12 for an egg bath bomb.
  • £35 for a bottle of body spray.

This just seems absolutely insane to me! I buy mostly Korean bath products as they're a safe zone for my eczema, they have decent ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and have hardly any chemicals (they use ceramides instead) or weird colouring. The ingredients are far superior yet they're half the price.

The lush products have SLES listed as the third product so obviously have a lot of it, three different fragrances and tin oxide (glitter) which aren't great.

Do people actually spend this much money on gimmicky products? Are they actually good? Do they smell incredibly to justify that price.

£21 for shower gel just blew my mind.

Funnily enough I love their products, 100% because they use natural fragrances and I actually love that. They're very strong. Its a very rare treat. Something I will get occasionally for a gift say.

The price compared to some popular toiletry products eg Sol de Janeiro is not far out, but to me it's not the sort of thing I "treat" myself to. But as others have said aimed maybe at teens or gifts and probably something that younger ppl value. Each to their own.

I thought everyone was boycotting Lush? They support trans activists and were allowing girls to order breast binders and pick them up from their stores. Despicable.

No idea re costs, but when we had a Lush shop in our local Mall I had to hold my hand over my nose and mouth when passing it. That level of scent is a health hazard that has very strong effects on asthmatics breathing. They present it as nature, but worse than the worst natural hazard to asthmatics - namely hyacinths

Love Lush but agree it’s become too expensive. We buy shampoo, conditioner and a leave in spray there as it’s hard to get shampoo that works for my hair and doesn’t give me an itchy scalp! A lot of stuff leaves my daughter’s hair fluffy so when we found stuff in lush we liked we got it as Aveda is the only other one that worked for us and that’s even dearer. I used to buy loads of their stuff - the dream cream was a particular favourite - but now we just get the shampoo. I don’t mind spending a little on hair and skin tbh - supermarket stuff has always given me a reaction. I also actually really like their ethics! My daughter uses their pots in her toy kitchen until it’s time to trade them for face masks.

They must have some customers who are happy to pay. I never step foot in their shops due to their promotion of breast binders for confused girls and their political stance against Israel.

people happy to pay especially because of their stance against Israel’s ongoing genocide of Palestinian people.

I can remember when they were Cosmetics to Go all those years ago. I think they were pretty dear then.

I see it as no different to the woman who bought a bit of cloth for her baby for £140 on another thread. You buy into the hype of the product. You believe the marketing, you think you’re getting something superior to the standard. You think the promoted lifestyle fits your way of life etc, so the mad money seems reasonable.

Edited

I loved Cosmetics to Go! They had a lovely neroli / orange range called something like Running to the Emperor

People who are happy to support the massacre and rape of Israelis at a music festival, the torture of hostages including babies, and the murder of the people of Gaza by Hamas you mean?

Was it Running For The Embassy? I loved that! I used to love Marzibain but that's no longer sold either.
I do buy their bubble bars which are expensive but you only need a tiny amount crumbled into the bath water and they last for ages.

Lush seem to have a cult following so I suppose they can charge what they like.
However I'm not part of the cult as just walking past the shop triggers my asthma 🙃.

LOL
love the comments. The factory is all of a few miles from where I live and fortunately if the wind is in the wrong direction the Rivita factory cancels out the strong smell and screaming of fresh fruit being crushed.

My brother worked in the packing room as a student. We were never short of fruit, bananas and pears that were rejected because of bruises etc. He constantly smelled of bicarbonate though until he went back to Uni.

I would love to have one or two of their products but unfortunately the high fragrances give my husband serious migraines that last for days .

Thanks for this thread! I have a Mario loving nearly birthday boy so just bought the bath bomb egg. It’s actually pretty big, twice the size of your average bath bomb and I think there’s something inside it too which he will enjoy discovering. So I guess I’m an example of how they get away with charging so much :)
