AIBU to consider a 26-mile commute temporary one day weekly?

Should I take on a job with a 26 mile commute? It’s only 1 day a week (8hours) for 9 months .
I also work part time for another company but could really do with the extra hours/ money.
the thing is that’s worrying me I have a lease car and I’m definitely going to end up going over the mileage. I’ve already looked at bus routes / trains, there is non to that are. What would you do?

How long will the journey take? 26 miles doesn't sound like a lot tbh, lots of people commute further - but there are east 26 mile routes and ones that would be a massive pain.

What are the implications of going over the limit on your lease car? Will it cost you money, if so how much? Can you change your lease agreement or get a different car?

Well this is my normal daily drive and doesn't take me more than an hour each way. My office moved to a city location and it was either change jobs, or suck it up.

I wasn't prepared to give up my wages/holidays/pension as they are unbeatable in comparable jobs.

So it all depends really, but for one day a week, it wouldn't bother me at all.

I do a 25 mile commute five days a week. It's not great but if I only had to do it once a week it would be no issue at all.

I used to do 40 mile commute (each way) 5 days a week. It was via an easy motorway route and did cost a lot in petrol. But at the time I needed a full time job and had to go with the flow.

Glad I did now, as it means I've got a pension to pay the bills now.

As others have pointed out 26 miles once a week isn't bad at all!

26 miles? are you serious? My commute is 20 miles, and I cycle it in good weather.

It's a little over 2,000 miles, isn't it? I thought car leases had a bottom tier allowance of 10,000. Ready to be told I'm wrong, but is it really impossible to shave 2k off your other driving?

Or, as already suggested, see how much it costs to go up a tier. 26 miles is not a long commute in the general scheme of things.

Also, you're struggling for money and you have a lease car - Think about this for a couple of seconds...

I drive 26 miles each way to work 5 days a week. It really isn’t an outrageous commute. Takes about 40-45 minutes and I’ve worked with people who’ve come from further.

My commute was a 75 mile round trip plus countywide travel for my job, often racking up 800-900 miles a month.

That’s fine in my opinion one day a week. We have people in our team who come 1.5hrs train each way. I regularly did a 26 mile commute when I was at uni, 3-4 days a week. It was fine. I prefer to be 30 mins door to door these days, as I like to go in 3-4 days a week, so I wouldn’t want to do 26 miles but it’s nothing once a week.

Just bear in mind that current trend amongst employers is having staff in the office more - so when making your decision, bear in mind that it could increase (if they have the office space of course).

Can you not drive to a station en route? Park there. Have a look which train lines go into the town / city you will be based at.

Also re your car miles - look at the relevant dates; you may find your commuting months fall into two years.

the additional mileage will only be a cost when you hand the car back on a PCP, if you keep it there should be no charge. if you change the car within the PCP there is unlikely to be a charge

26 miles is nothing. My office is 35 miles away. Is the pay good? Is it the right step to take for your career? The distance should not be a big deciding factor.

But your other thread (that you posted this OP on too by accident) is about your MIL and how she helps ‘us with our kids’ and comes into ‘our house’ which would suggest a DH…. Why bother lying about something like that. (people can view post edits for future reference!).

Agree 26 miles is nothing.

She can still have a MIL helping out even if they are separated.

My journey is 11 miles and because of the route takes me about 45 minutes - madness but it is what it is. I go in 2-3 days a week. I’m still just grateful that it’s not 5 days a week like it would have been pre pandemic.

My DH used to cycle this every day. We moved,did the downsize near the sea thing.. he was travelling 80 mile round trip, me just over 100. Gave my notice to retire,less than a week later, his company liquidated on the spot! He's 7 years younger. I rescinded my notice and carried on with the journey for 3 years. I worked nights,3 a week, 12.5 hours, allowed 2 hours to commute, home was 90 minutes.I got London weighting,high cost living, it was the better alternative to a local position.

Depends what that 26 miles covers. If I have to go to our other office it is 25 miles, at least 40 mins (but usually closer to an hour at rush hour due to traffic) and a tunnel toll of £2.25 each way. To my base office takes me 12 mins at rush hour, no tolls.

Current job is 42 miles each way and takes an hour

you are quibbling over once a week an an extra 52 miles a week driving

unless you have a really low limit for lease car I wouldn’t even notice an extra 50 miles once a week in mileage /petrol
