AIBU to consider a 26-mile commute temporary one day weekly?

Should I take on a job with a 26 mile commute? It’s only 1 day a week (8hours) for 9 months .
I also work part time for another company but could really do with the extra hours/ money.
the thing is that’s worrying me I have a lease car and I’m definitely going to end up going over the mileage. I’ve already looked at bus routes / trains, there is non to that are. What would you do?

But your other thread (that you posted this OP on too by accident) is about your MIL and how she helps ‘us with our kids’ and comes into ‘our house’ which would suggest a DH…. Why bother lying about something like that. (people can view post edits for future reference!).

Agree 26 miles is nothing.

Or it would suggest that her ex dh mum helps out esp as now prob doing it mainly by herself

@GladBeakersaid her l ife has changed a lot in the last year meaning a break up I’m guessing if you read between the lines

Whatafustercluck · 13/03/2026 07:33

My second job was a 25 mile commute but it was largely motorway driving. 25 miles across countryside roads is different to 25 miles on a motorway. An hour is doable though. Until recently I commuted 2 hours by train each way, twice a week. Lots of people do. Harder if you're a single mum to young children though.

GladBeaker · 13/03/2026 05:47

Thanks for your reply’s. It will take me just over an hour each way. I’m a single parent to 2 kids, my life has changed a lot the last year so trying to make things work. Im
going to give it a go. Thanks!

I'd say a lot has changed in the 10 minutes since you started your last thread as you had a MIL in that one but now you're single...

She says 'we' an awful lot in the other thread. And claims the MIL has a key to her house and let's herself in regularly whilst 'we' are in. Would you allow your ex-mother in law to let herself in regularly whilst you're in the house?

That's hardly anything. Why would it be an issue

Agree 26 miles is nothing.

I’m a single mother and say “our house” because it’s mine and my kids’ house. There are three people living in it.

Why bother going to great lengths to try and catch out a mum trying to work out if it’s financially sensible to take on a commute alongside her other commitments?

ByUniqueViper · 13/03/2026 09:23

I commute 92 miles (there and back) twice a week. I wouldn't want to do it every day but 2 days is fine.
Is the only thing bothering you the lease car? Can you try extend your miles? If not work out if the extra you will have to pay at the end is viable for what you would earn working that extra day .

"Our house" could just as easily suggest her and kid's house. Either way, it's not relevant to the question.

26 miles is nothing but would depend on where you are driving. Very different timeframes if it is 26 miles on country roads, motorway or in the middle of the large city. City - I wouldn't do it. Other two options are fine and will take less than an hour. My nearest town is 15 miles away and it takes me 20 minutes on a country lane.

JaceLancs · 13/03/2026 09:29

Agree it’s nothing - I travel a lot for work but try and restrict it to within an hours drive as otherwise it’s too long a day

Tbh I wouldn’t let anyone let theirselves in if I was in the house

whether mil or ex mil

I think this says more about you than the OP. I’ve had ex boyfriends in the past and had extremely good relationships with their mum. My last one I had a better relationship with his mum than I had with my own!
just because a couple separate doesn’t mean that other relationships break down and there are also amicable splits!

Elbowpatch · 13/03/2026 09:55

26 miles one day a week I would even question.

I used to commute 100 miles five days a week for a couple of years by car. That is too far.

MyMiniMetro · 13/03/2026 10:38

What’s going to be the penalty if you go over the lease agreed mileage (or the cost to renegotiate the mileage allowance)? Does that eat in to the money you’re earning to a level that makes it not worth it? Especially when you consider tax etc.

26 miles in an hour is pretty slow- is that at peak times?

It’s a pretty typical commute for many people though.

IsItSnowing · 13/03/2026 10:59

I'd say it's not far at all and a lot of people commute much further every day.

HelmholtzWatson · 13/03/2026 05:43

Also, you're struggling for money and you have a lease car - Think about this for a couple of seconds...

You cannot just cancel a lease normally - she may be stuck with it mid term. Circumstances may have been different when she took out the lease.

Bjorkdidit · 13/03/2026 11:45

If the question is about the mileage on your lease car, work out how much the excess mileage is. Sometimes its fairly trivial.

If not, see if you can renegotiate your contract to get a better deal. Or at least save the money up so its not a struggle to pay it when you return the car, if that's the plan.

But have you considered buying the car at the end of the three years instead of leasing again? When my work had lease cars, people used to do that a lot and it was usually an easy and good value way of buying a well maintained 3 YO car that you knew the history of.

NCAgainAgainAgainAgain · 13/03/2026 12:18

Is this thread complete BS as well? Along with the other one you posted this morning about your MIL letting herself into your house? The MIL you have even though here you’re separate and a single parent?

No, on the other thread she repeatedly says ‘we’ and ‘our house’. It’s very clear that in that thread she is part of a couple. The thread was removed at her request. OP is a bullshit merchant.

mindutopia · 13/03/2026 12:23

I used to commute about 180 each way 3 days a week and I did that for several years. I drive 26 miles just to get to a doctors appointment.

NCAgainAgainAgainAgain · 13/03/2026 12:26

And if the other thread was not BS, then why request to take it down? Why not just say, my exMIL keeps letting herself in?

Love2Fly · 13/03/2026 20:03

Try a 267 mile (each way!) commute which I do 4-5 times a month. 26 miles is nothing!

Lizchapman · 16/03/2026 12:24

Before Covid my commute was 42 miles each way four days a week round the M25 past Heathrow so I’d have loved the one you’re looking at. I’d say go for it!!
