Birthday in December - when should I have my party?

I have a milestone birthday coming up on Early December.

I've never really had a birthday party and I'd really like ot have one for this, at my local pub.

IME, noone wants to come out in Early December, everyone is penny pinching for Christmas or have their Work Dos or other Christmas events hence why I've never really had a proper party.

I'm thinking of doing it on either November or January instead.

My sister is getting married in late October so I'm not sure if November will work for a lot of my family who will probably be skint from spending on the wedding, and my sister and her family who will definitely be skint and possibly on honeymoon/just back from honeymoon.

January is just January. Always a bad month

WWYD?

I really don't want to risk looking like a billy no mates when noone turns up on the night.

So jealous of people with Summer Birthdays!!!

What about doing it on NYE? Everyone will be in the mood!

SJM1988 · 11/03/2026 13:14

My DH has a Feb birthday so we postponed until the summer for his 30th so we could do it at home. His 40th we did this year and he had it in Feb, definitely less people turned out - it was half term though.
I vote postpone for nicer weather all the way

NobodysChildNow · 11/03/2026 13:15

I second NYE!

why not ask your friends and family - the most important.

id say November though

I won't be able to use my local pub on NYE to host a party. They will have their own NYE party on.
And I really want to use my local pub because I like it, spend time there, and know the bar staff

Midsummer. Light, bright, summer dresses, fun drinks, warm weather, open windows, bbq, salads. What’s not to look forward to?

If you die before your actual birthday then you were lucky enough to have been at your own wake.

DC has a December birthday. We usually do a half birthday party in June.

Get your party in first. So this summer.

If you get given gifts, you could promise to hang onto them open them in December on your birthday?

TheSandgroper · 11/03/2026 14:36

Or come out here to Perth. I can guarantee you all the sun you might like in December.

Ooh my sister loves in Perth.. don't tempt me 😆

I'd love to but I really just can't afford it with Christmas and all

First thought was November before I even read all your post.

LlynTegid · 11/03/2026 15:02

I think the idea of going somewhere to celebrate appeals. Or just have a small party in early December.

I don't do the nonsense of milestone birthdays, every year a birthday should be just as important.

coffeeagogo · 11/03/2026 15:05

My birthday is January and it’s properly rubbish - I had my milestone birthday on the 1st July in garden with a lovely BBQ, so much better!

How can you celebrate a February birthday in the summer? Your birthday is on the anniversary of the day you were born…so really you just want presents?

DH wanted to celebrate a milestone with his friends and family. Couldn't have cared less if they bought a present or not. I have no idea of people did bring presents or not but I can tell you who was there 10 years later.

Or a get together with all the people she wants to spend it with ?

3 out of the 5 of us in our family have birthdays at times when people can't usually get to them - it is very normal for us to celebrate a month or two later. It is the 'getting people together' that is important not a specific date - that is just the hook to hang it on.

JustGiveMeReason · 11/03/2026 15:26

I'd go for an 'official birthday' in June, like the King does.
Particularly with your family all having the wedding to think about - it leaves a nice gap and people will be more likely to make the effort.

youalright · 11/03/2026 15:33

I dont see anything wrong with early December if people have plenty of warning

PurpleThistle7 · 11/03/2026 15:42

You can have a party whenever you like. I missed my 40th with covid so ended up having a 43.3 ceilidh and it was a fabulous time. No gifts as I'm an adult but just a fun time.

I would do a half birthday if your pub you like has an outside space. Otherwise I'd do January as I'm always super bored in January.

Rooroobear · 11/03/2026 15:43

I have a milestone bday early December too and I’m having it the first weekend of December

Bluesclues1 · 11/03/2026 15:47

I think have a party either the last weekend of November or first weekend in December will be absolutely fine. If anything, people are more in the party mood around that time - just get the invites out in good time! I don’t get the whole half birthday thing personally.

daffydreams · 11/03/2026 15:55

my birthday is 24th Dec. if i have a party at my next big birthday I'm doing mid summer's eve before

Skybluepinky · 11/03/2026 16:00

Just have it on your Birthday, or they will think you are desperate.

HawkersWest · 11/03/2026 16:24

I think you're overthinking it. Just have it early December, give people plenty of notice so they can book it in.

Well, you'd think, but for my 30th, I invited people in February and still people said they couldn't come
