Child passport application

I’m worried I’ve mucked up my child’s first passport application. The documents it’s asking me for as the parent are:

  • full birth or adoption certificate (showing both the child’s and parents’ details)
  • naturalisation or registration certificate
  • the non-British passport they had when you were born showing indefinite leave to remain

When both my husband and I are British, actually have a full British passport, always had one etc. Shouldn’t it be asking me for my passport number?

Am I going to have to pay to start again? Or can I call them tomorrow to fix this?

That's what I had to provide for my babys passport in December

CrackInTheGlass · 11/03/2026 02:03

They still do need the birth certificate and they do generally ask for your and your partners passport numbers. That should come later to be filled in on the form.

WiseSheep · 11/03/2026 02:40

They need the birth certificate for you, or their dad, and the child. There's no way around it or alternative any more.

Ah ok, thanks all, is this very new? I don’t think I needed it for my first child - neither DH nor I have our birth certificates!

You need the child's long birth certificate and the passport numbers of you and your dh - im sure there's a space to input them somewhere. You dont need yours/dhs birth certificates if you supply the passport numbers.

That wasn't the case when I applied late last year. I thought they would want my passport number but no, they wanted my birth certificate.

Probably a good time to get some certified copies ordered.

i did passport applications last year and while i was on went through everything and made sure i had birth/death/marriage certs for kids, me, and my parents.

dementedpixie · 11/03/2026 07:55

This is from the passport notes:

Evidence of applicant’s parents’ claim to British nationality at the time of applicant’s birth This could be:

  • Parents’ British passport number (provided at section 4 of the application form). Or
  • Full birth certificate of parent(s)*. Or
  • Certificate of registration or naturalisation

were you. Born in the uk.? You can apply to the council you were regiatered to for new certificates.

Bestwishes23 · 11/03/2026 08:03

I did my DC's last month. We needed to enter both parent's passport details in the application. We also had to send the original copy of DC's birth certificate and one parent's birth certificate to the Passport Office.

ferociouslychristmas · 11/03/2026 08:05

What is a naturalisation or registration certificate? I am doing my sons just now and both myself and husband are British nationals, I don’t think we have one of these 🤯

Same here. I had to order my birth certificate as I didn't have the full version which is required. Think it was £12.

Yes we were both born here, we just don’t have the documents ourselves. I’ll apply for copies, it’s just an extra thing to do, unexpected given that we didn’t need them the first time.

You dont need one either if you were born in the UK
You need passport numbers for the parents and long birth certificate for the child

dementedpixie · 11/03/2026 08:46

@Mum18282 have you put in the passport numbers at section 4?

Tootiredforthis23 · 11/03/2026 09:46

@Mum18282 so you were both born in the UK and have no other passports? I think you’ve made an error somewhere in that case.

Same situation as you and did our DCs passports last week. We had to send child’s birth certificates and our marriage certificate due to my name change and provide our passport numbers as part of the application. If they’ve asked for proof of right to remain it sounds like you’ve selected the wrong part when asked about EU citizenship/right to remain. I’d call them and go through the application with them. You have no proof of naturalisation/registration if born in Britain to British parents.

You don’t need to go to the council, you can order online quickly and easily :

https://www.gov.uk/order-copy-birth-death-marriage-certificate

Order a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate

Order an official birth, adoption, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate from the General Register Office (GRO) if you need a copy or want to research your family tree.

Sounds like the child or you/your husband were not born in the UK. It is perfectly normal to ask for birth certificates

Ok thanks, good to know. I’ll call them to change it.

You have filled out the wrong form then as they would not be asking you about proof of right to remain

littlemousebigcheese · 11/03/2026 14:02

@dementedpixieif it’s their first passport, you need a parents birth certificate. We just went through it - had to submit our passport numbers, our birth certificates, friend had to sign the photos to agree their identity. Replacement passports might just need parents passports but first ones are harder for safety reasons

Thanks. I’ve just called and I got through very quickly. Yes things have changed since my first child. Application is correct. Parents birth certificate is indeed needed.

I called the passport office and everything is correct. The birth certificate is now required for one parent even though we were all born here and have always been British.
