There is so much that I think is important, from all sides, about what's going on. In particular, Iran sending these drones to several neighbouring countries, which seems to be forging new alliances that could shape the geopolitics of the Middle East for at least the next generation. I would like to know a lot more about this - and why ie the president of Iran initially apologised for doing this but has now withdrawn that apology, and what this all means.

But in a week and a half so far the BBC seems to focus way to much on:

  • Brits coming home from Dubai
  • The price of oil going up

Try Newsnight maybe?

All the radio stations were about the price of petrol.

Smeuse · 09/03/2026 16:15

Maybe expand your news sources?

I've tried reading Arab news sources on Telegram, which are far more informative, but it's not the same as watching the news on TV. Do you have any recommendations?

You need to read a newspaper for the in-depth analysis. I’ve got a New York Times subscription and that’s very informative, but the U.K. Times has a lot of analysis too.

Can you read Arabic or is this for Western readers...

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 09/03/2026 17:32

BBC World Service radio. Covers most aspects, and comprehensive world events.

itsthetea · 09/03/2026 17:35

The current headline is uae and turkey intercept missiles so you are being selective in what you see

there is nothing about Brits coming home on the front page but there is talk of oil prices and since there was a G7 meeting today on that, that’s fair

itsthetea · 09/03/2026 17:37

I would like to know what is happening in Palestine at the moment though

Aliceisagooddog · 09/03/2026 17:37

You do know that the US and Israel are bombing the fuck out of Iran right? They are responding to Israel and US bases in the gulf States as they bloody well should.

It's for Western readers or English speaking readers.

'Abu Ali Express in English' is a good channel with regular updates of info although it is explicitly anti Iranian regime / pro the Iranian people. I don't know if it's a Sunni site with links to ie Saudi Arabia, an Iranian exile account or Israeli

Much the same on ITV really (I've swapped as the BBC is so repetitive).

Try Al Jazeera, the App is in English and it’s a useful news source on all sorts of topics, gives an alternative insight.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 09/03/2026 18:07

Also Panorama tonight BBC 1 at 8.00 is about the war.

MushMonster · 09/03/2026 18:07

Newspapers have covered quite a bit. But this week is focusing on the prices and trade, because it is hitting the markets. Radio stations have been really good too.
I think you need a bit of history to get a grasp of it.
Unfortunately, the Iranian prime minister has apologised, but the bombings do continue. And what they have also said is no to surrender or negotiations. So at this point, it is bombing each other, cutting the traffic of oil crude and destroying vital infraestructure.

TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 09/03/2026 18:24

As an example - Middle East channels reported several hours ago that the new Supreme Leader has been injured in an attack. Possibly seriously. Even Iranian state media has, apparently, acknowledged that he might have been hurt.

The BBC hasn't mentioned it all day.

The BBC will be looking to verify this information via numerous sources before it’s reported.

Associated Press are a good verified news source, but they don’t appear to be reporting this either, and I can’t see it mentioned on Al Jazeera.

Edit: I’ve found this on the Daily Mail, totally accept it’s not the best of sources but even their mention of it implies it’s something that’s being vaguely reported in Iran and may even be referring to a past injury, in which case other UK sources have likely dismissed it as not hugely newsworthy.

HeddaGarbled · 09/03/2026 18:59

Times newspaper said that may have been the reason for the delayed announcement of his succession: they wanted to be sure of his health first.

I think the newspapers can speculate a bit more than the BBC, who are minutely scrutinised by hostile parties.

Sofado · 09/03/2026 19:09

Are you watching BBC News channel? It’s reasonably comprehensive. Definitely not just Brits stuck in Dubai and oil prices.

Smeuse · 09/03/2026 19:18

Neither have other international news outlets like AP, Al Jazeera, Reuters, CNN, Sky, Le Monde, Bild

gamerchick · 09/03/2026 19:40

I watch Al jazeera because it seems to be the default when I turn the telly on. It's a bit more terrifying than our news stations.

I think watching a few in rotation might give a full picture but I don't have the stomach.

MissyB1 · 09/03/2026 20:17

Try channel 4 news they often report a bit wider around the issues. They also grill the people they interview much harder than BBC do.
Al Jazeera is good though.

SpottyAlpaca · 09/03/2026 20:31

Newsnight is usually pretty good for analysis. Sky News have some very good reporters & pundits who understand the Middle East & the military.

Most Of the British newspapers are useless, The Guardian is so obsessively anti-American & antisemitic that it is constantly pushing an agenda. The Torygraph is so Islamophobic & obsessed with warmongering that it is constantly pushing an opposing agenda. The Mail only cares about the effect on influencers who are flaunting their assets in Dubai. The Times is better & probably the closest thing to objective reporting.

Pekkala · 09/03/2026 20:37

Al Jazeera is very good. I was in the Gulf last week and it's what we had on the TV all day to keep up to date.

SwedishEdith · 09/03/2026 20:42

Financial Times has some of the best journalists now and a more measured comments section.

Are you listening to the radio as well? Radio tends to be more in depth than the TV.

climbintheback · 09/03/2026 20:56

I thought I was the only one - fecking hate the BBC!
