AIBU to not have a teapot!

My dad thinks I am. I live on my own so it’s not worth it. He always complains when I make it in a cup.

I live alone and I have multiple tea pots of varying sizes - some of my favourite ones are the teapots for one which combine with a cup and saucer.

I make a teabag in a cup tea for lunch but have tea made in a teapot with loose leaf tea in the evening and it allows me multiple top ups of my cup. And I do prefer tea with loose leaf tea.

If you are quite happy with just making your tea in the cup then that is your choice and you shouldn't feel pressured to get a tea pot if you don't want one. But personally I get real pleasure out of mine.

DH doesn't drink tea but I do occasionally, I haven't had a teapot since leaving parental home 26 years ago!

ChinaPlates · 09/03/2026 12:56

Well not if you don't want one you aren't. I love a teapot. I use one no matter how many people I am making tea for. To me, it's easier and less messy.

AGreatUsername · 09/03/2026 12:57

I’ve never had a teapot, always make tea in the cup!

FinallyHere · 09/03/2026 13:02

I used to keep one stainless steel teapot just for my parents when they visited. They still claimed that my tea was ‘grim’.

sigh.

Meadowfinch · 09/03/2026 13:03

I don't drink tea, I can't bear the smell. My dsis only drinks tea, so I bought one of those small teapots that sit on top of a teacup.

Seems to work when she visits.

muddyford · 09/03/2026 13:05

I always use a teapot even when it's just me.

BauhausOfEliott · 09/03/2026 13:06

Of course you don’t need a teapot. Have one if you want one but I don’t own one and I drink loads of tea.

NovemberMorn · 09/03/2026 13:07

Never had one. One teabag for each cup makes a lovely cup of tea.

Lamelie · 09/03/2026 13:09

I rarely use a teapot but do for guests. Spend £5 (or less on one for a charity shop) and make your dad happy!

NovemberMorn · 09/03/2026 13:11

I will add, if you have a lovely dad, and he prefers his tea from a teapot, I would buy one just to please him.

My grandson loved cakes served on a three tiered cake stand (he had seen them in the local garden where they served fancy afternoon teas) So I bought one just because he loved them.😍

It's stuck in the loft now he has grown up. 🙄

Toddlerteaplease · 09/03/2026 13:12

I wouldn’t mind but his tea is dreadful. When I was little my parents would put one tea bag in a large pot for 4 people. Fortunately I now know better!

Maybe times were hard, I know people who use a teabag (in a cup) twice.

Honestly, if you know better...why not just buy a teapot to make your dad happy?

Toddlerteaplease · 09/03/2026 13:27

My mug of choice is a pint mug. So probably larger than a single tea pot. Since he insulted my cat yesterday by calling her a “scraggy puss” I think he should suffer. 😂😂😂

It’s entirely up to you, of course, but I always find making tea directly in the cup makes it too strong and slightly stewed tasting. I also like to use loose leaves which you can’t do in a cup.

😱 Poor puss!

Toddlerteaplease · 09/03/2026 18:12

@Catspace she’s covered him in cat hair. 😂😂 if you are familiar with my cat from
the litter tray you will know that she is definitely not a scraggy puss! She’s a princess. And will tell you so. 😂

I prefer to use a teapot

Gwenhwyfar · 09/03/2026 18:22

I didn't know anyone still used teapots except on special occasions.

frozendaisy · 09/03/2026 18:25

As with anything you can have great and awful tea made either way.

HappyFace2025 · 09/03/2026 18:29

I can't understand why people put a teabag in a cup and expect it to taste properly of tea.
I have teapots including a one for a single cup that I have at breakfast and tea time. Teabag in a pot, allow to stew depending on how strong you like it, and bobs your uncle.

Yes I do recognise your username from Litter Tray. You have a long haired cat with a flat face. I’m so sorry I can’t remember her name xx

Really don't like tea made in a cup, tastes so much better by using a teapot in my opinion

GinToBegin · 09/03/2026 18:46

Another vote for using a teapot, it just makes for better tea - as long as the pot isn’t metal. Stainless steel teapots always make tea taste very harsh to me.

Appleandcidergravy · 09/03/2026 18:50

I don't like tea- but I have 2 teapots. A small one pot, and a bigger one. My parents like tea from a pot- and had to be China mugs and a china tea pot when on a picnic when we were little. Dad said tea tastes funny out of a thermos... They don't visit often but have a teapot for when they do
