Car stolen off my drive, again

chasegirl · 08/03/2026 14:34

It was stolen the first time almost exactly 2 years ago, they smashed the drivers side window and hot wired it at about 4am. Neighbours ring doorbell footage showed my car on the drive, then it cut off for about 15 mins at that time, when it resumed my car was gone It was found repaired and returned to me.

It was stolen again last night, my daughter heard cars speeding off and looked out her window saw my car and another 1 disappear round a corner. No smashed window this time do no idea how they got in. They removed the tracker device and crooklock.

I don't want it back at all.

I feel like I've been targeted. They won't get caught and it'll cost me. Victims of crime seem to be the ones who pay in every way, not the perpetrators

This is quite weird, but I would be moving house.

You need to get an old fashioned steering wheel lock.

She had an ordinary one but they were able to remove it.

These are the best:

My lexus was stolen from outside my house as my key was not in a Faraday pouch. (Id had it 7 months but it was 5 years old and I stupidly thought thieves would be after much newer cars)

It was devastating. I am disabled and my 2.5k mobility scooter was inside and I'd paid 1.5k to have a hoist fitted. Insurance didn't cover either. In fact, having the car stolen cost me iro 10k what with losing scooter, hoist, premium going up and insurance paying out 3.5k less than I'd paid for the car just 7 months previously. This happened 3 years ago and I am still so aggrieved about it....

I replaced the car and had a ghost immobiliser fitted. The car will not start unless a certain sequence of button presses are input. Worth its weight in gold for peace of mind.

@chasegirl honestly I've got the rage on your behalf

I'm so sorry

I don't think you have been targeted as an individual. I don't know what type of key this is, but they can track pretty much everything. If the keys weren't in a Faraday pouch, then I would imagine they track it. I think they probably have some kind of scanner where they'll go around looking for a car that is available to them, basically. Though the poster saying an old banger was stolen off the drive by a tow truck...FFS.

There's a house I walk past a lot which has been burgled twice. I think they've fitted it not just with something that detects a person passing, but something that will detect any kind of signal as well.

The levels of crime in this country are really worrying. But what's more worrying is that nothing will be done because of the level of corruption.

I find it surprising that they bothered with the crook lock but given the level of tool theft, I suppose they steal an angle grinder and it's the work of moments.

That's awful 😖 I'm so sorry. People who do this just seem to get away with it, it's enrahing

The OP said it had one on.

They can clone your key from outside, a friend had her audi stolen like that.

It’s why I keep my keys in a faraday fox though apparently my car now has an alternating frequency so much harder to clone

rosyvalentine · 10/03/2026 02:44

Sympathies OP. I've had my car stolen twice off my driveway. The first time it was found burnt out and the second time, it was located about a year later in Lithuania. So annoying. I ended up with huge insurance premiums for 4 years after each car was stolen. The first time, they hotwired it. Second time, they broke into my house and took my keys. Both c. 3am thefts. We heard them and came downstairs and they ran away. We were in the kitchen calling the police and they came back and took the car - we saw them reversing it out of the driveway. And the insurance company never gives you back the true value of the car, so it costs you in two ways - less money to replace the car and contents and higher insurance premiums until you build up your No Claims Bonus again. It sucks!

JacquesHarlow · 10/03/2026 03:53

to @JTRSOP and @Weeelokthen , did you enjoy having your little dig at the OP who is clearly vulnerable and upset after having a vehicle stolen off her property?

It doesn’t matter in the slightest whether you think the thieves have “done her a favour” or you personally “wouldn’t have it back” because you don’t like Fiat 500s.

If someone mugged a Mumsnetter for a Michael Kors handbag, would you lot be on here saying the thieves did them a favour? Is that what we’ve come to now - queuing up to belittle someone for their taste rather than commiserate with them for their loss?

Personally I have no issue with Fiat 500s, they’re one of the most successful retro revival cars since the millennium and a welcome sight on our roads considering how large cars dominate the landscape now.

But my opinion, and yours, is irrelevant -

The OP had their car stolen, it could be a Fiat or a Ferrari, it’s still wrong, it’s still distressing, and they deserve every sympathy.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 10/03/2026 04:03

We have a car which can be targeted for theft due to the key type but have Faraday pouches for keys, and an immobilser fitted. Doesn't stop someone smashing the windows but to get it away they would need a tow truck. And a larger sized tow truck as when we did have a problem the AA had to go back for a bigger one. I have actually heard about cars being stolen this way locally but f they are prepared to go that far there isn't a lot you can do.

Does the tracker tell you where it is? Some people have found their own cars abandoned a few streets away.

Weeelokthen · 08/03/2026 15:51

Sorry op but I think they did you a favour

And the award for c… of the day goes to -

Astra53 · 10/03/2026 06:34

I am so sorry OP that this has happened to you.

Your key was cloned. To prevent this, I keep mine in metal biscuit tin, away from the front of the house where the car is parked. My friends's car was cloned in a public car park. They followed her home and stole her car off her drive, so a Faraday pouch is a good idea too.

High end cars are always targeted and more regular models too, for spares.

Fiat 500. I am going to get my own cameras now.

It's made me feel so angry and upset

Wow a standard Fiat 500 or a sporty version? Didn't think they were on the desirable list.

BlueRedCat · 10/03/2026 06:58

for your next car put multiple air tags in it. Like, 4/5. All stuffed in a variety of locations. Some easy to find and some very hard (so hard you probably can’t retrieve yourself) . They will think they have found them and will drive (not pun intended) them crazy trying to find them all. It should give you enough time to find the car in between it being stolen and the them finding them all. Usually when when a car is a stolen they park it up someone to see if it has a tracker and is reclaimed.

ActoBelle · 10/03/2026 07:08

I agree that bollards and an AirTag are good ideas. My cycles have AirTags hidden in the frames.

It’s awful having some taken and then it feels like punishment to have to pay your excess and watch your premiums go up.

dh calls my car a skip on wheels as there’s so much crap in there and it needs a good hoover out thanks to the dogs. But maybe it’s a good thief deterrent? 😁. Though I think maybe with some cars they’re stolen for parts? We had a spate near us of people having their catalytic converters stolen while parked up. They leave the car and just take the part.
