Car stolen off my drive, again

chasegirl · 08/03/2026 14:34

It was stolen the first time almost exactly 2 years ago, they smashed the drivers side window and hot wired it at about 4am. Neighbours ring doorbell footage showed my car on the drive, then it cut off for about 15 mins at that time, when it resumed my car was gone It was found repaired and returned to me.

It was stolen again last night, my daughter heard cars speeding off and looked out her window saw my car and another 1 disappear round a corner. No smashed window this time do no idea how they got in. They removed the tracker device and crooklock.

I don't want it back at all.

I feel like I've been targeted. They won't get caught and it'll cost me. Victims of crime seem to be the ones who pay in every way, not the perpetrators

Big commisserations. They dismantled the Crookloc? what type, so can avoid.

Weeelokthen · 08/03/2026 15:51

Sorry op but I think they did you a favour

DH has gone back to using a good, old-fashioned steering lock after someone tried (unsuccessfully) to steal our Ford Focus from his work's car park.

I'm back to using one again. Keyless locking makes it easier for burglars so I have a faraday pouch and a steering wheel lock. I know a determined thief can get round this but it takes a little longer to steal a car with one.

At home I keep the car in the garage.

Throwntothewolves · 08/03/2026 15:55

Get a steering lock and use it.
Cameras are a deterent but your neighbour having one didn't put them off. Prevention is your best defence, make it hard for them.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 08/03/2026 15:56

They're easy to steal and are popular for parts for amateur racing or tuning projects. It would only have taken them a matter of seconds for they to break in by tampering with the OBD port to start the car or using a relay attack for a keyless entry model. Trackers, steering locks and cameras etc are no real deterrent to such lowlife and will simply be removed. Such cars too tend to be stolen to order.

If you were to get another car I would get a bollard fitted beforehand.

HelloCheekyCat · 08/03/2026 16:13

There's no point getting cameras because they won't be identifiable and the police probably don't care
A locked gate/penguin bollards at the end of the drive would make it a lot.more difficult to get it off the drive. yes it's an.expense for you but better than having another car nicked

Megapint · 08/03/2026 16:15

Fucking scumbags. Obviously it's up to you to research what car you should buy so it does get stolen!. The police don't have time to find out who's responsible they're far to busy dealing with Women asking questions at Women's Day events and those who's feelings have been hurt by words. Absolute bullshit of our country.

Netcurtainnelly · 08/03/2026 16:17

Sorry OP.
Wonder how they'd like their car stolen.

Hereforthecommentz · 08/03/2026 16:17

I thought you were going to say a porche or something. Fiat 500, I can only assume they are easy to break into then as I don't think they are desirable in the slightest. This happened with my shitty old ford fiesta but that was 20 years ago in a council estate and back then you could just bend the door back, it happened twice. I thought cars were harder to break into now though and to do it in a driveway is brazen.

Edit to say get a camera. We have one, only today the police knocked on the door asking for footage for another incident (someone got knocked over in highstreet and they wanted to see if the culprit had come down our road). They are very handy and a preventative measure.

FlapperFlamingo · 08/03/2026 16:17

Sorry to hear that OP, so frustrating and inconvenient. I would suggest more anti-theft measures, some of which you probably have as it's happened before:
Good crook-lok and ensure it's always used.
Park facing your house (then they have to reverse first), even better if you can park side on and not make it an easy getaway (e.g. partially block with another car or something else).
Cameras with recording if you don't have them.
A bright floodlight which is sensitive to people is a good deterrent because they don't want to be lit up brightly.
Car alarm.
Can you put fence and gates up and lock the gates?
Always ensure the car is locked and use a faraday box for the keys so they can't spoof the signal.

Eyesopenwideawake · 08/03/2026 16:20

Second (third?) the advice of getting a bollard. No tech, very visible deterrent.

How have they done her a favour by stealing her car?

What a horrible and thoughtless thing to say.

She now has to deal with the insurance, search for a new car, pay increased premiums, possible without transport for a while.

It doesn't matter if you like the car or not. It's the OP's property and she did not deserve to have it stolen.

@chasegirl I'm really sorry. I'm in a similar situation because some cunt reversed into my car in a large van and it's been written off. It's an absolute ball ache to deal with.

Autumn1990 · 08/03/2026 16:32

The locks which lock the pedals together are very good as it’s very hard to remove them.

TheDaysAreGettingLongerAtLast · 08/03/2026 16:47

My Ford Fiesta was stolen from the driveway a few years ago.
The engine turned up a year later in a shipping container that was being shipped to Lithuania. Coincidentally, a Lithuanian mechanic was renting a house across the road and down a few doors from me and my brother had had his car fixed by him within the previous year.

Romeosurfs · 08/03/2026 16:51

We had a crook lock. Thieves cut through the steering wheel. We now have a disc lock.

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 08/03/2026 17:01

JTRSOP · 08/03/2026 15:46

Really? Why? I cannot see anything appealing about them. My friend had one - had to put my daughter (in car seat) in her car through the boot. On the motorway, it was like sitting in a tin can with no suspension. Felt like it would be smashed to smithereens in a crash.

Sorry OP - don’t have it back - get a nice new car.

I assume this is rhetorical?

I feel like there's more to the story... did they catch the thieves?

chasegirl · 08/03/2026 17:20

It was a standard crooklock from Halfords, a yellow 1.

Bollards might get be an option, I have a 2 car wide drive but only 1 car so I imagine I'd need to install 3 to be worthwhile.

Bollards and a disc lock etc all add up cost wise, end up costing more than the car 😀

I think I should get a courtesy car on the insurance fingers crossed.

Buy a rubber snake and leave it on the dash. Nobody will touch your car, ever.

Occasionally, it's not the first post that clinches it.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 08/03/2026 17:39

My car alarm started going off one morning at about 5.30am - I reset it but it went off again moments later. So I went out and the drivers door was partially open - I know it was locked the night before as I check the app on my phone before going to sleep. We then put in a security camera over our driveway, we've got an RFID box for the keys and we both park so that the drivers doors are the ones facing the camera.

It's bloody wrong to have to do it in the first place.

The police told me about finding the engine a year later but did not share any other information and I didn't ask as my insurance company paid out the market value of the Ford and I bought a different brand as they had informed me that the Ford Fiesta was one of the most stolen cars in the country that year.

Hellohelga · 08/03/2026 18:00

You need to get an old fashioned steering wheel lock.
