I'm about an hour and a half in to an induced miscarriage of baby, who had no heartbeat on scan, wasn't allowed surgical. I'm already in AGONY and very emotional so please no negative comments.

Please give me some interesting facts to help take my mind off of things. I love learning new things and it'll keep me sane.

I'll go first - did you know that originally Lara Croft was going to be called Laura and be American?

🐙 Octopuses have three hearts. Two pump blood to the gills, and one pumps blood to the rest of the body. But here’s the adorable part: the main heart stops beating when the octopus swims, which is why octopuses prefer crawling along the seafloor instead of swimming. Basically, swimming is so exhausting for them that their heart takes a break!
So when an octopus chooses to just chill and crawl around, it’s not being lazy — it’s literally better for its heart. ❤️
A good reminder for humans too: taking things slow sometimes is perfectly natural.

Sending love and strength x

This made me feel quite emotional but I’m not really sure why 🐙

I always thought the Elgin marbles were a bag of marbles and that the Cold War was so called because they were all in heavy coats in the cold blowing on their hands

All time zones progress in 1hour intervals except Newfoundland, which is half an hour out of step with everywhere else. Ornery Newfies ftw!

China geographically spans 5 time zones but they all use the time zones of Beijing. That means in the far west of China sunrise can be at 11am

Crabs have blue blood because they have copper as the oxygen catching bit rather than iron (like us). It's iron which makes our blood red (probably a lot more complicated than this but this is all I remember.....!)
Thinking of you OP

In some species, an octopus can either have a functioning digestive system OR reproductive system. Once she's laid her eggs she will slowly starve.

They have extremely short life spans - the longest is about 5 years, some less than a year.

Nature is hard.
And there are times life sucks. However, the daffodils are up and about and the birds are getting busy. Spring is getting ready to do its thing. The garden is inviting me to go and get started, but I’m feeling a bit too lazy. Knitting it is.

I have recently found out an interesting fact about cats. It is a common misconception that cats bring you dead prey as a "gift". In fact, cats teach their offspring to catch prey by progressively taking them through levels of challenge. First, they bring kittens dead prey to play with, then harmed by alive, and all the way to live pray which they caught but didn't harm. So the only reason humans get repeated dead prey is because we never seem to progress from this learning step.
Sorry, it's a bit morbid but utterly fascinating (to me, anyway).

My cat was waiting to be let in the other morning say next to a huge dead rat he had obviously tortured to death. My son had to fling it in the wasteland behind our garden that was once part of our garden

Hope you're feeling physically a bit better at least OP.
I'm not very good at fun facts, but here is a funny video of cats running away from cucumbers.

My really sorry. I may be in the same position soon, scan yesterday showed a very slow heartbeat but baby measuring 6 weeks 2 when I should be 7 weeks 5 (IVF so dates 100%) so they think it’s unlikely to end 😔 I’ve never actually had a miscarriage before, just lots of failed attempts and then two smooth pregnancies when it did work. I have no idea whether they will offer medical management or tell me I have to wait and see. Waiting on a call from the EPU as I don’t even know how long it will “take” and what time I’m going to need off work.

In terms of fun facts…Giraffes are 30 times more likely to get hit by lightning than people. Apparently!

SunnyRedSnail · 07/03/2026 14:38

House flies buzz in the key of F.

(well sort of. their wings beat 175 times a second on average, which is the equivalent to an F note).

@Chez2306 hope you're doing OK. A slightly more grim fact for you: I had two missed miscarriages many years ago and had to go for surgical removal of the remains as my body didn't mis-carry. I was put in the same room/dorm as women waiting for abortions. It was awful. The same hospital where the EPU was in the same building as the normal pregnancy scans (used the same machine) so whilst you were waiting to find out if your pregnancy had ended, you had to sit with heavily pregnant women. Equally awful. Thankfully they have since moved the EPU elsewhere! If you're in the area that's had no water, then you might know which hospital this is!

Impossiblyme · 07/03/2026 14:47

I know one fact (although I don’t want to google I case it sadly turns out to not be true!).

There are more bacteria in your mouth than your rectum.

Think about that next time you go to snog someone.

chatelai · 07/03/2026 14:55

Sorry you're going through this shitty experience.

Fun fact: tardigrades are the most robust creature on earth. They are super-small, and look like little 6-legged woolly pigs/vaccuum cleaner combo. They have been found in the extremest heat and cold and will probably survive the heat-death of the sun.

If you need to run away from a crocodile, you need to run in a zig zag. You might thank me for that one day... If you ever use it, please do tell me 🤣

Sending so much love, I've been there ❤️ xx

Artic translates to bear and Antarctic is no bear. Bears are almost exclusive to the northern hemisphere. Think there is only 1 bear species in Southern hemisphere.

There is a species of penguins native to Australia.

It's Burt Lancaster, not Charlton Heston, who is in Local Hero. Lovely film.

Rats giggle when you tickle them. A collective noun for rats is a mischief.

Most mammals can manufacture Vitamin C in their bodies. Monkeys, apes (including human beings) and guinea pigs can't, so have to eat Vitamin C rich foods.
