Have a nice day or keep smiling?

Somebody's suggestion that instead of the cashier in a shop saying have a nice day, at the end of the transaction,it would be good if they said keep smiling to the customer?😀

Which do you think is best?
Have a nice day or keep smiling?

Neither. Thank you is all that’s required.

Swiftie1878 · 02/03/2026 12:06

Neither. Goodbye and thank you are the only necessary words.

SadTimesInFife · 02/03/2026 12:07

"Don't eat it all at once"

FlowerFairyDaisy · 02/03/2026 12:07

'Have a good day' is nice. People are used to it and know that it doesn't require a response.

'Keep smiling' assumes they have things to keep smiling about when they may not.

Fivelegged · 02/03/2026 12:07

If someone said ‘Keep smiling’ to me I’d assume they were being heavily sarcastic.

SadTimesInFife · 02/03/2026 12:08

"I remain, madam, your obedient servant"

Mulledjuice · 02/03/2026 12:09

"Keep smiling" would have elicited 1000s of voiced and non-voiced "fuck off"

SadTimesInFife · 02/03/2026 12:10

"See you next Tuesday"

(Just throwing some alternatives into the ring..)

BringBackTheLight · 02/03/2026 12:10

They'd get a hard stare from me if they said keep smiling!
Are you in the USA?

randomchap · 02/03/2026 12:10

Thank you, come again

SadTimesInFife · 02/03/2026 12:11

"Get behind me, Satan!"

SadTimesInFife · 02/03/2026 12:12

"Love you!"

Fivelegged · 02/03/2026 12:14

SadTimesInFife · 02/03/2026 12:11

"Get behind me, Satan!"

Good one.

Or cackle ‘And some that smile have in their hearts, I fear, millions of mischiefs.’

Or ‘One may smile, and smile, and yet be a villain.’

Libre2 · 02/03/2026 12:14

I cringe slightly even when told to have a nice day. I think “thank you” is perfectly adequate.

SadTimesInFife · 02/03/2026 12:17

"You remind me of....Grace Kelly"

Bruisername · 02/03/2026 12:17

I don’t mind ‘have a nice day’ and I tend to say it first to delivery drivers/cashiers

keep smiling would make me never go back to that shop. I want my groceries, not to be patronised.

and anyway, I wouldn’t be smiling so it’s not a phrase the cashier can use on repeat so a bit of a hassle for them

SadTimesInFife · 02/03/2026 12:18

"You're not as handsome in real life"

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/03/2026 12:24

Neither!

”Keep smiling” is particularly egregious

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/03/2026 12:24

I can live with “have a nice day” and always reply “you too”

PersonIrresponsible · 02/03/2026 12:26

"Yes, I am judging"

Miranda65 · 02/03/2026 12:28

They're both unnecessary, but "keep smiling" is patronising and a bit pathetic.

latetothefisting · 02/03/2026 12:34

keep smiling makes me think of the people (usually men, almost always to women) who say "cheer up it might never happen" or "smile!"

but who is "somebody's suggestion" OP? It's a stupid one!

Apart from anything else, "have a nice day" is usually understood to be missing the "I hope you..." at the start - i.e. they want you to have a nice day (even if they don't really care!) 'keep smiling' can only be a directive - they're ordering you to smile. Which is both inappropriate, and, if they aren't smiling in the first place (and who does grin inanely while doing the shopping), nonsensical.

InterestedDad37 · 02/03/2026 12:37

I know what you did last summer

InterestedDad37 · 02/03/2026 12:38

I can recommend a good surgeon

Blueunicornthistle · 02/03/2026 12:41

Keep smiling is really inappropriate.

If I patronised a store where the customer advisors were all told to say “keep smiling” I’d complain to management.
