Accidentally booked tickets a Bricktastic Lego event on Mother's day

My DD (13) is really into Lego so I booked tickets to Bricktastic event where people look at and sell Lego. It was £10 for 3 of us but I didn't realise til after I booked that it was on Mother's Day.
I have not told my daughter about it and I would rather have a lie in (it is at 10.30) and go to a late lunch which is booked for 14.30.
AIBU to just not go or am I being a bit mean.

Memories on a day out with your kid beats no memories whilst laying in bed

ToKittyornottoKitty · 02/03/2026 12:37

Lie in the day before, and the lunch time sounds fine. Sounds like a nice thing to do on Mother’s Day with your child

IwishIcouldconfess · 02/03/2026 12:25

What exactly is the issue???

She wants to stay in bed and not go out

I’d go and do something with your kid. I assume you’re one of those princesses who expects the world to revolve around Mother’s Day and your birthday.

Or her partner is a bit of a shit and Mother’s Day is the only day she gets a bit of a break.

I’m not arsed about a Mother’s Day lie in, but then I had a lie in yesterday

The DD is 13, I’m sure dad doesn’t need to supervise so OP can have a lie in

Why wouldn't you want to do something enjoyable with your daughter on Mothers Day? My favourite think about Fathers day is that DD actually wants to spend time with me doing something enjoyable!

um...well presumably OP doesn't consider a lego event "something enjoyable"? A view I share tbh!

OP if 'the three of us' includes another adult then why can't they take your dd and you have a lie in, then all meet for lunch?
Or you have a lie in on Sat or next week instead?

Parsleyforme · 02/03/2026 12:56

Couldn’t you just have the lie in on another day? There is no law that Mother’s Day, birthdays etc. have to be celebrated on the exact calendar day. I think it’s a bit mean that your daughter will miss out because you want to lie in on that precise day

Why did she book and pay for three tickets if she didn't want to go? She hasn't even told her daughter about it. If she didn't want to go then she didn't need to buy the tickets in the first place

SparkyBlue · 02/03/2026 13:00

OP that sounds lovely. You can enjoy the event and then have lunch. I think unless there is something we are all missing if your child is 13 then I assume you aren’t up at night with a baby or up on weekends at 5 or 6am like those with very young DC are. My dd is doing a dance show that day so I’d swop easily for the lego event 😀😀😀

Comefromaway · 02/03/2026 13:02

I can't think of a more perfect way to spend mother's day that take my teen child to an event they will love.

Allswellthatendswelll · 02/03/2026 13:21

It's so Mumsnet that Mothering Sunday is this super special and holy day where you can't do anything else!

You can have a lie in and lunch any day. My family never did Mother's day. My mums birthday is very close to it and she's never been a fan of it. I do things for her all year round - the notion that you can only be spoiled and have a lie in because it's a special day seems a bit odd to me. You can go to lunch the day before or the week before if this is something your daughter would really like

I feel really sorry for a lot of the women on MN who take 'special' days so seriously. The amount of angst about one Sunday a year, I can only think they have really really shit lives.

It really isn’t! And I think 95% voting that OP is BU shows that.

So why book the event in the first place?! 😂

ChequerToRed · 02/03/2026 13:30

For me, this would be an ideal Mother’s Day. I wouldn't even care if the kids wanted to go, I bloody love a Lego show.

Think a lot of people offline think exactly the same

CleanOurWater · 02/03/2026 13:30

Just switch your lie in to another day.

Agree.
And why do they all have to go too. Its bizarre. If the mother has no interest (and Lego wouldn't interest me either) but why on earth did she book three tickets instead of two tickets in the first place. Making such a big deal about something so trivial is nonsense.

It really isn’t that weird to book tickets to an event your kid would enjoy that’s not particularly your thing. That’s a very normal thing to do as a parent. She just didn’t realise it fell on Mother’s Day.

What difference does that make?

Mothers day isn't the only day she can have a lie in or go for lunch.

PJ98 · 02/03/2026 13:52

I wouldnt prioritise a lie in (which could be interrupted anyway by something out of your control anyway) over an event, no :s
